Mary Alice Smith, 92
Solomons
Mary Alice Smith, 92, Solomons, passed away July 8, 2006, at the Solomons Nursing Center. She was Born in Baltimore, on Oct. 28, 1913.
The daughter of Frederick Clinton and Alice Mary Pentz, she attended Southern High School in Baltimore. Mary worked for C&P Telephone and Bell Atlantic for 35 years as a telephone operator and service assistant.
Mary was married to Edgar Clifton Ruark for 23 years. Later she married Hilford Smith and was widowed after 25 years of marriage. She resided in Parkville in Baltimore County where she was active in the Woodhome Senior Citizen’s Center. She enjoyed knitting and was as active duck pin bowler until the age of 84.
She lived at Oak Crest Senior Community in Parkville for six years until due to failing health moving to live with her son and his wife Marilyn in St. Mary’s County. She lived the remainder of her life in her own apartment at the Hermitage at St. John’s Creek an assisted living facility on Dowell Rd. in Solomons.
Her daughter, Joyce Alice Collins, of Asheville, N.C. and her son, Frederick Asa Ruark of California, Survives her. grandchildren include John Collins of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Crysti Nix of Sharpesburg, GA, Jeffrey Ruark of LaVale, Erin Askea of Destin, FL, Elizabeth Ruark of Duluth, MN and Sean Collins of Asheville, NC. She is also survived by 8 Great-grandchildren.
Services were July 12, at the Brinsfield Funeral Home 22955 Hollywood Road Leonardtown, MD 20650.
Mary was be laid to rest at the Garden of Faith Cemetery in Baltimore County on Thursday July 13, 2006.
Margaret Stoffers, 91
St. Mary's City
Margaret Veach Stoffers, 91, of St. Mary’s City, died on July 13, 2006 in the St. Mary’s Nursing Center in Leonardtown, after a lengthy illness.
Born on Jan. 25, 1915 in Terre Haute, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Perly Otto and Mary May Veach.
She attended Indiana State University and taught school for 36 years, many of which were in St. Mary’s County. She also served as a Principal and Assitant Principal during this time. She was a long time member of the Lexington Park United Methodist Church. She was an accomplished pianist, and enjoyed playing the piano and singing for family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Captain Henry Stoffers, USN, whom she married August 4, 1941 in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Lois Henderson and Mildred McPheeters; and brothers, Gerald Veach and Dr. William Veach, all of Indiana.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Joe Dunn of Leonardtown, two grandchildren, Christie Dunn of Leonardtown, MD and Sharon Keefe and husband, Dan Keefe of Chesterfield, Virginia and three great-grandchildren. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors at Brinsfield Funeral Home, Leonardtown, from 5 to 8 p.m. on July 16. Funeral Services will be held at the Lexington Park Methodist Church, Lexington Park, at 11 a.m. on July 17. Interment in the Arlington National Cemetery will be private.

Theresa Raley, 75
Mechanicsville
Theresa Cusic Raley, 75, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Clinton, died July 11, 2006 in Washington Hospital Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1931 in Mechanicsville, she was the daughter of the late John Quincy and Nora Bussler Cusic. She was the loving wife of Carl Ignatius Raley whom she married in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Morganza.
She is survived by her children: Marvin Raley of Mechanicsville, Malcolm Raley of Edgewater, Darlene Holley of Clinton, and Denise Delinski of Lake Mary, FL; brothers: Elwood Cusic, Edward Cusic and Harry Cusic all of Mechanicsville; 7 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her brother: James Cusic and sisters: Catherine Raley and Yvonne Wood.
Mrs. Raley was a graduate of Margaret Brent High School Class of 1947, she moved back to St. Mary’s County from Clinton in August 1979. She was member of the Mechanicsville Volunteer Rescue Squad Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting & needlework, fishing and crabbing.
The family will receive friends on July 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where Prayers will be said at 3 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on July 17 at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Mechanicsville, with Fr. Peter Alliata officiating. Interment will follow in Queen of Peace Cemetery.

Lou Norris, 64
Hollywood
James Louis “Lou” Norris, 64, of Hollywood, died July 3, 2006 in St. Mary’s Hospital.
Born April 15, 1942 in Hollywood, he was the son of the late Bernard S. and Mary Leathe McGee Norris. He was the loving husband of JoAnne Patricia Adams Norris whom he married in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He is survived by his sons: Randy, Nick and Jason Norris all of Hollywood, and 3 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister; Mary Burch and brothers: Jim and Frank Norris.
Mr. Norris was a life-long St. Mary’s County resident where he graduated from Leonardtown High School Class of 1960. He was the owner/manager of Insley’s Auto Parts Inc. for forty five years until his retirement on Dec. 31, 2004.
He enjoyed camping, fishing, bird watching and story telling.
The family received friends July 6, at Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, where Prayers were said at 7 p.m.. A Mass of Christian Burial was be celebrated on July 7 in St. John’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Raymond Schmidt officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ray Norris, Walter Powell, Danny Greer, Ricky Guy, Mike Norris and John Abell. Honorary Pallbearers will be Michael Harrison, Walter Short and Lenny Guy.

Phyllis Welch, 61

Phyllis Ann Welch, 61, of Lexington Park, died July 4, 2006 in Lexington Park. Born Sept. 6, 1944 in Washington, DC she was the daughter of the late Betty Irma Goldsborough and Upton Eugene Johnson.
She is survived by her sons Timothy Thomas and Charles Clark both of Lexington Park; her sister Kay Ellen Patterson of Mechanicsville, and four grandchildren.
She graduated from Northwestern High School in 1962. She moved to St. Mary’s County in 1968 where she worked for 16 years as a School Bus Driver for Kessler’s Bus Service. She was the President of Bus Drivers Association, President of Green Holly PTA, President of Spring Valley Apartments Association, Member of Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad, and Associate of the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department.
The family received friends on July 7 at Bay District Fire House where a funeral services were held July 8. Interment followed at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers were Keith Jefferson, Kenneth Parnell, Travis Bowes, Joseph Gould, David Carroll and Christopher Jones. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jeffery Evans, Sherwood Harris, Danny Reppel. Keith Wilson, Sheldon Curtis, and Lee Fetty.

Haystack Cocimano, 40
Ridge
Joseph Michael “Haystack” Cocimano, 40 of Ridge, died July 5, 2006 in Scotland.
Born November 17, 1965 in Washington, DC he was the son of the late Antonio Rodney and Annie Marie Cocimano.
He is survived by his brothers: Antonio Cocimano of Lexington Park, and Nick Cocimano of Leonardtown.
He is preceded in death by his sister: Mary Helen Lettau.
Mr. Cocimano moved to St. Mary’s County in 1977 from Washington, DC and attended Great Mills High School. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2006 at 10:30 AM in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Ridge, with Fr. O’Connell officiating.

Jack Hart, 90
Waldorf
WWII Veteran
Jack Ronald Hart of Waldorf, died on Monday, June 26, 2006 at the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home in Charlotte Hall. He was 90 years old.
Born April 18, 1916 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Eleanor Butzbach Hart and Roscoe Hart. Mr. Hart served in the U. S. Navy during World War II until he was Honorably Discharged in 1945 at the rank of Aviation Ordnanceman First Class. He was an avid entrepreneur, whoes ventures included owning and operating a Locksmith business, serving as Warehouse Manager for J. B. Kendall Hardware and being actively involved in a variety of investments. Mr. Hart loved animals and was a member of the American Legion.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hart was preceded in death by his wife Reba Geraldine (Butcher) "Pete" Hart and his Aunt Florence Biase.
He is survived by his daughters Barbara J. Hill of Clinton, and Judith A. Mohler of Fort Lauderdale, FL; seven grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren.
Service and interment will be 11 a.m. July 11, at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Cheltenham (everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery by 10:45 a.m.).

Dorothy Lay, 72
King George, VA
Dorothy Ann Lay of King George, Virginia died at her home on July 2, 2006. She was 72 years old.
Born Oct. 22, 1933 in Columbus, Indiana to the late Violet Hill and Melvin J. Mayes, she was a homemaker and mom and was living in King George, VA for the past 18 years after residing in Columbia.
She is survived by her husband Robert E. Lay, Jr.; daughter Karen Mary Richardson of Bridgeville, DE; sons Michael Robert Lay of Barstow, CA and David Thomas Lay of Mechanicsville; four brothers James Mayes of Florida, Robert Mayes of Florida, Thomas Mayes of Elkhart, IN and Michael Mayes of Columbus, IN; eight grandchildren.
Family will receive friends on July 7, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, Charlotte Hall. Funeral Service will be held in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Mechanicsville, on July 7, at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Phillip Ayers officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.
