Mechanicsville
Gladys May Edwards of Mechanicsville, died on July 2, 2006 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Leonardtown. She was 80 years old.
She was born in Washington, DC on Feb. 12, 1926 to Oswald Harris and Blanche Jenkins Harris. She had four brothers who adored her; Oswald (Buster) Harris, Elmer Harris, William (Harold) Harris and Leroy (Turk) Harris.
She was an auditor for various department stores including the Union Station Gift Shop and Woodward & Lothrop both in Washington, DC. Her hobbies included shoppping, luncheons and movies. She was of the Baptist faith and a member of the Upper Room Fellowship in Clinton. Before moving to the Golden Beach area, she lived in Washington, DC, Spring City, TN, Hyattsville, and Waldorf.
She had two loving husbands James Garland Hays who she had three loving children, James Garland Hayes, Garlinda Hayes (Ferguson) and David Hayes. She had eight grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her life was being with her family, going to country music shows, writing poetry, going to church, listening to gospel music, going out to eat with her family and shopping.
After the death's of her father and mother, her two husbands and her four brothers, she helped keep the family together. To keep the family together, once a week her nieces Gladys (Polly) Hunter, Shirley (Sissy) Tayac, Betty (Tootsie) Murphy and their families would get together or breakfast or lunch and every four months her children, her nieces and nephews and their families would get together for lunch. She wanted all the generations to keep in touch.
Her brother, Oswald (Buster) married to Grace. They had Katherine, Jimmy, Jean, Peggy, Roy and Rickie.
Her brother, Elmer was married to Ruby. They had Betty, Mary Ann and Randy.
Her brother, William (Harold) was married to Dorothy. They had Dottie, Bill, J. (Sonny), Betty (Tootsie), Ralph (Pete), Roy and Evelyn.
Her brother, Leroy (Turk) Harris was married to Juanita. They had Gladys (Polly), Shirley (Sissy), Bobby, Joe, Barbara Jean, Butchie, Bernie and Richie.
She is survived by her children, James Garland and Peggy Hayes Jr. of Hyattsville, David Nelson and Debra Hayes of Bryantown, Garlinda M. and Michael Ferguson of Golden Beach; grandchildren Barbara, James Garland III, John, Kathi, Donna, Sandi, David II and Marlea; great-grandchildren Billy, Ariana, Jesse, Garrett, Scoti and Cameron; also many nieces and nephews.
The Family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. July 4, at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, Charlotte Hall. Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. July 5, at the Upper Room Fellowship, Clinton, with the Reverend Phillip Harris officiating. Pallbearers are James Garland Hayes, Michael Harris, Harvey Norris, Lee Holdsworth, David Hayes, Billy Tayac and Michael Ferguson. Interment to follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery Suitland.

Bobby Phipps, 61

Vietnam War Veteran
Robert Martin Phipps, affectionately known as “Bobby” or “Bob” of Aquasco, died Monday, June 26, 2006 in Charlotte Hall. He was 61 years old.
He was born on March 22, 1945 in Fauquier County, Virginia to the late Ruth Frances Matthews Phipps and George Kline Phipps.
Phipps served in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War before being Honorably Discharged. He then worked for NASA and was currently owning and operating Hairtasia Salon in Charlotte Hall. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Hughesville, and a dancer with the local Boot Scooters Dance Team. He loved to play bingo, travel, work in his garden and proudly cooked various meals.
He is survived by his two sons Robert Phipps and his wife Teri Phipps, Patrick Phipps and his wife Stephanie Windsor; sisters Shirley Fox and Caroline Levia; brothers George “Buck” Phipps, Raymond Phipps, Oden Phipps, Dennis “Buddy” Phipps and Gus “Tommy” Phipps; grandchildren Zachary Murphy, Mackenzie Phipps, Kelsey Phipps and Robert Phipps, III.
The family received friends on July 2, at the Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, Charlotte Hall, where Funeral Services were held on July 3, with the Reverend Wilson Morales officiating. Interment will be at Maryland Veterans Cemetery Cheltenham. Following the services, a time of fellowship will be held at the Benedict Volunteer Fire Department in Benedict.

Ira Edward Fowler, Sr., 81, of Hollywood, formerly of Wheelersburg, OH died June 4, 2006 in Hollywood.
Born Feb. 8, 1925 in Edgewater, he was the son of the late Gary Albert and Mary Virginia Miller Fowler. He was the loving husband of Naomi Thompson Fowler for sixty one years whom he married on December 31, 1944 in Hollywood.
He is survived by his children: Shirley Fowler Hutchinson and her husband Tom of Louisburg, NC, Vivian Fowler Leon and her husband Robert of Raleigh, NC and Ira Edward Fowler, Jr. and his wife Sue of Wheelersburg, OH; siblings: Robert Fowler of Louisville, KY and Dorothy Hardy of Severna Park, MD and grandchildren: Rachel Hage, Jonathan Leon, Emily Leon, Ira Fowler, III and Samuel Fowler.
He was preceded in death by his daughter: Sandra Sue Fowler and siblings: Virginia, Gary, Joseph, Marion, Mary, David, Albert, Thomas, John, Katie, James, Emily, Walter and Paul.
Rev. Fowler moved to St. Mary’s County in 1941 where he was a minister for the Church of the Nazarene.
The family received friends on June 6 in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home. A Funeral Service was held on June 7 in the Hollywood Church of the Nazarene, Hollywood, with Rev. Joseph Hoopengarner officiating and Rev. Tim Grose co-officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were be Robert Leon, Drew Thompson, Jack Wiley, Bob La Duca, Don Rogers and Larry Joy.

Philip Warren Brewer, 90

Philip Warren Brewer, 90, of Solomons, MD, passed away on June 27, 2014 at Solomons Asbury Assisted Living in Solomons, MD.
Born on December 18, 1923, in Hagerstown, MD, he was the son of the late Jacob Chester Brewer and Ruth Emmert Brewer.
Philip earned his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maryland College Park. He married his beloved wife, Elizabeth Brewer, on August 29, 1947 at the Washington Cathedral in Washington D.C. Together they celebrated 66 wonderful years of marriage. He was a civil engineer with the federal government. He worked as the Head of Naval Special Design for over thirty years. Philip was instrumental in design of facilities supporting nuclear power reactors in Antarctica and Greenland. Philip was an avid hunter who crafted his own gunstocks. He used to cast and load his own bullets. He took great pride in restoring a family heirloom, a tall case clock. He achieved Eagle Scout as a teenager.
In addition to his wife, Philip is survived by his children, Dorothy Brewer-Pecson (Benjamin) of Great Mills, MD, and Bruce D. Brewer of Baltimore, MD. Philip is preceded in death by his parents. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, MD 21742.

Joseph Elmer St. Clair, 88, of Avenue, MD, passed away surrounded by his loving family on June 22, 2014 in Callaway, MD. Born on November 20, 1925, he was the loving son of the late Harry Thomas St. Clair and Myrtle St. Clair. Joseph was the loving husband of Margaret Genevieve St. Clair, whom he married on July 14, 1947 in Holy Angels Catholic Church Avenue, MD. Joseph is survived by his children: Linda Patricia Cross, Joseph Anthony St. Clair (Sherri) all of Avenue, MD, Mary Bernadette Cheseldine (Lenny) of Hollywood, MD, 8 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way. He is preceded in death by his siblings: Thomas Emmanual St. Clair, Daniel Webster (Pete) St. Clair, and Joan Marie Ferguson. Joe was a life member of the American Legion Post 221, faithful member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church. He was a farm equipment mechanic, waterman and farmer. He retired from Guy Brothers Implement in 1990. He loved his family, working in the garden and sharing his vegetables with friends, and neighbors. He loved making crafts and restoring furniture. He was so proud of the things he made for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was past Vice Commander and historian for the American Legion Post 221, and he helped build the American Legion. He served in WWII in the South Pacific, the Philippines and New Guinea, with his dear friend Roy L. Smith (Smitty). They served together and remained lifelong friends. Smitty preceded him in death on April 25, 2003. They are now together again. The family will received friends on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM with prayers recited at 7:00 PM followed by American Legion and Optimist prayers in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. Gladys Jane Anderson Barber, 95, of Mechanicsville, MD, died peacefully at home on June 22, 2014. She is survived by a daughter, Judith C. Curbow and son, James C. Barber (Alice), both of Mechanicsville, MD., daughter-in-law, Linda J. Barber of Mechanicsville, MD, and family friend, Lorraine Alderman of Mechanicsville, MD. And sisters, Marie Chesley and Elva Mattingly-Wood of Mechanicsville, MD, and Helen Thompson of Solomon's, MD, ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Gladys was born on February 22, 1919. The third child of Cora Eva Williams and James Briscoe Anderson. As the oldest daughter in a family of 11 children, she spent much of her time caring for her younger siblings. She attended Margaret Brent High School and was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County. Gladys was a quiet, content Lady, who enjoyed working in her yard, landscaping, and planting flowers. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; husband Ninian Pinkney Barber, Jr., sons, John Chapman Barber, Sr., Clifton A. Barber, Sr., and brothers, Robert L., J. Herman, J. Albert, F. Born August 16, 1982 in Tampa, FL, he was the son of Grace Paroby Lash of Newburg, MD, formerly of Blairsville, GA and Donald R. (Foo) Lash of Leonardtown, MD.
Jacob was born in Florida, and raised in Calvert County. He was employed by Steamfitters Local #602.
In addition to his parents, Jacob is survived by his soul mate, Casey Lea St. John of St. Leonard, MD; daughter Gabrielle Nicole Lash of St. Leonard, MD; sister, Maegan Lash-Willey (Raymond) of Waldorf, MD; niece and nephew, Emilee and Nathan Willey; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph and Jane Lash and Michael and Bereth Paroby.
Family will receive friends on Thursday, June 26, 2014 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the Rausch Funeral Home, 20 American Lane, Lusby, MD 20657. A funeral service will be conducted by Msgr. Michael Wilson at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be private.

Mary Eva Alvey, 100, of Leonardtown, MD, passed away June 20, 2014 at St. Mary's Nursing Center in Leonardtown, MD.
Born on March 14, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Matthew Hazel and Mary Frances Pillsbury Hazel.
Mary was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County. She married her husband, James Leach Alvey, in October 1935 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Compton, MD. They were married until his passing in 1980. She loved to be outside. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens. She used to take special care to arrange all the flowers for the altar at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. She also enjoyed crabbing and vegetable gardening. She enjoyed spending time with her family.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Sylvia "Jean" Alvey of Leonardtown, MD; her sisters, Mary Cusic of Leonardtown, MD and Idalia "Teeny" Cusic (Lester) of Leonardtown, MD; her grandchildren, Ronnie Alvey, Anne Marie Alvey, Barbara Jean Emmart and Edward Wayne Alvey; 8 great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, and her son Leonard Jackson Alvey and great-great-grandson, Calvin Oliver Emmart.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 24, 2014 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 22800 Washington Street, Leonardtown, MD 20650. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Reverend David Beaubien at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
