James Francis McLaughlin, 87

James Francis McLaughlin (Jim) passed away peacefully at NUMC hospital in East Meadow NY, on Monday, Jan 28, 2014, holding the hand of his beloved wife of 56 years, Mary Pilkerton of Clements, MD. Jim was born November 15, 1926 in Valley Stream, NY. He was the son of Archibald J. and Mary Dryer McLaughlin, and was preceded in death by his parents, his five brothers, and his son Theodore W. Long (Ted). He was a veteran of World War II, in which he served as a Naval Aviator and was stationed at Pax River NAS. After separation from the Navy, he and Mary resided in East Meadow on Long Island, NY, for 55 years.
Jim leaves behind his wife Mary, and his daughter, Bertie Jean Long Schumacher (Rick), a daughter in-law Tammy Long, as well as six grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Jim was an avid bowler, and when his health declined, he remained the secretary of his leagues. He was a puppy walker and proudly raised 9 guide dogs for the blind, one of which is still in service. Jim loved raising his guide dogs, traveling, visiting southern MD, photography, and computers.
He retired from Sperry Gyroscope Company after 35 years in 1986. He held a Master's degree from Adelphi University and a Bachelor's degree from Hofstra University in Electrical Engineering. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtown, MD. A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at 12:00 PM in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Bushwood, MD, with Father Charles Cortinovis officiating. Billy Joe Sullivan, 68, of Loveville, MD, passed away on January 27, 2014 in Leonardtown, MD. Born on November 26, 1945 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the loving son of the late Edgar and Trula Ward Sullivan. Billy is survived by his loving longtime companion Patricia Martin. Children; Diane Gleissner (John) of California, MD, Michael Sullivan (Kimberly) of Hollywood, MD, Kathleen Sullivan of Mechanicsville, MD, 8 grandchildren; Danielle Sullivan, Jason Sullivan, and Gabrielle Gleissner, Chelsie Hagar, Angela Martin, Taylor Preist, MacKenzie Preist, and Meagan Hagar Siblings; Earl Sullivan of Lexington Park, MD, Charles Sullivan of Ridge, MD, Terry Sullivan and Jenna Harden both of Columbia, KY. He was preceded in death by his sisters; Barbra Sullivan, and Judy Rollins. Billy was a lifelong St. Mary's County resident and worked as a building Manager for Bob Hall, Inc. for 27 years, retiring in August, 2012. Billy enjoyed; fishing gardening, cooking and spending time with his family. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 30, 2014 from 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home Leonardtown, MD. Brandy Renee Spalding, infant daughter of Anissa N. Spalding and Christopher R. Withrow and Bryan A. Iagnemmo of California, MD, died January 27, 2014 at MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown, MD.
In addition to her parents, Brandy is survived by her brother, Landen Spalding, her grandparents, Donna and Jack Gatton, Carlton Turner, Regina A. Gatton, Kenneth Withrow, Jr., Sharon L. Baker, and Paul M. Baker; and her great-grandparents, Betty & Robert Isenberg and Tina & Roni Turner, and Margaret Tinsley.
Family will receive friends on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 2:00 until 3:00 PM, with a funeral service at 3:00 p.m., at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Interment will be private.

Beverly "Jean" Thomas Abernathy, 75 of Leonardtown, MD, died January 26, 2014 at Hospice House of St. Mary's in Callaway, MD.
Born September 14, 1938, in Detroit, MI, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Garr Thomas and Ruth Leanore Schultz-Thomas.
Jean retired from General Motors in Detroit, MI, after seventeen years of dedicated service. She spent ten years working as a historian and trolley car driver in Tarpon Springs, FL. She also volunteered her time tutoring Native Americans in Michigan in Literacy and Art. She was a recognized artist, with work displayed at the National Gallery of Art in Michigan and the Art Institute in Flint, MI. She was an avid sailor and enjoyed organic gardening.
Jean is survived by her daughters, Connie Adams-Clark (William) of Mechanicsville, MD and Brenda Gilbert of Waldorf, MD; her grandchildren, Brieannon J. Gilbert of Waldorf, MD, Benjamin H. Gilbert of Annapolis, MD, Morgan Summers (James) of Callaway, MD, Jessica Burling (Steve) of Navarre, FL and; and two great-grandchildren, Naomi Gilbert of Waldorf, MD, and Jakob Burling of Navarre, FL. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her son, Terry Raye Abernathy.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date in Michigan.

Esther Olson Naylor, 91

Esther Olson Naylor, 91, of Westwood, Maryland, died peacefully on January 26, 2014.
She was born April 14, 1922 in Leeds, North Dakota. She was the 6th child and first daughter of Norwegian parents.
At the start of World War II, she took the civil service exam and came to Washington, DC, to work at the Coast Guard as part of the war effort.
In 1948, she married G. Rodgers Naylor, Jr. and, together, they learned to fly, each obtaining private pilot's licenses. In the early 1950s, they moved to the Naylor family farm in Westwood, Maryland, where they raised three children.
In 1987, she retired from 16 years as an administrator for George Washington University's Romance Language Department.
She loved the southern Maryland countryside and lived at the farm until 2009. She was an avid gardener, keen reader and intrepid traveler.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Ruth Dianne Naylor and Christopher Boddington; G. Rodgers and Ellen Naylor; and Debra Anne Naylor and Peter Boundy. She was predeceased by her husband, G. Rodgers Naylor, Jr., as well as her eight siblings.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, February 1st at Brookfield United Methodist Church in Naylor, Maryland. The family will receive visitors at the church beginning at 10 a.m., prior to the service. Immediately following the service, the burial will be at the family cemetery at The Naylor Farm near Baden.

Margaret Ann Gilbert, 92, of Prince Frederick, Maryland, passed away on January 25, 2014 in Prince Frederick, Maryland. She was born July 27, 1921 in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Grover C. and Margaret B. (Prui) Wise. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Leon E. Gilbert, Sr., son Alan R. Gilbert, Sr., Brother Frank Wise and Sister Ruth Schneider.
Margaret is survived by her children, Madeline Hutchins (Donald), Ann Dibble (Jim), W. Rowe Gilbert (Barbara), Leon Gilbert Jr. (Linda), David Gilbert (Jackie), Tim Gilbert (Theresa), and Gary Gilbert. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Pat Gilbert, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 1, 2014 from 11-12 Noon at the Asbury Community Bible Church, Rt. 231, Prince Frederick, MD, where services will follow at Noon. Interment will be in Central Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Todd Hutchins, Chris Gilbert, David Gilbert, Jr., Jimmy Dibble, Tim Gilbert, and Alan Gilbert, Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvert Hospice. Francis "Frankie" B. Guy, 78

Francis Benedict "Frankie" Guy, 78, of Clements, MD, passed away on January 25, 2014 peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Born on October 7, 1935 in Loveville, MD, he was the son of the late James Warren Guy and Rosalie Greenwell Guy Clarke. He was the loving husband of Sara Jane "Sally" Alvey Guy, whom he married on December 31, 1960 at St. Joseph's Church in Morganza, MD. They celebrated 53 wonderful years together.
He is survived by his wife and daughters: Angel Quade (Ray) and Crystal Hayden (George) of Clements, and Dana Jameson (Donnie) of Charlotte Hall. Grandchildren: George Hayden, IV (Christine), Amanda Guy (Charlie), Rachel Clem (Jimmy), Michael Hayden (Colleen Lilly), Gary Hill, Shannon Hill, Riley Love, Brody and Kinley Jameson, step-grandchildren: Ray Quade, Jr. and Amber Quade Spiegel. Great-grandchildren: Lindsey, Kelsey and Charlie (Jr) Guy, Raelee Clem and Maggie Hayden. Siblings: Rosemary Keener, Patricia "Patsy" Downs and Margaret "Peggy" Goddard.He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Angel Ann Guy and siblings: Emanuel "Sugar" Guy, Charles "Tippie" Guy, Phyllis Smith, William "Bucky" Clarke, Jacqueline "Jackie" MaGill, James "Neary" Guy, John "Cakum" Guy, Warren "Shine" Guy, Robert "Buck" Guy, Catherine "Jeanie" Guy and Mary "Doll" Guy.
Frankie attended Great Mills High School. He lived in St. Mary's County his entire life and made his family home in the 7th District.He was employed with the State of Maryland, Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge, Toll Facilities in Newburg, MD. He retired in 1997 after 32 years of dedicated service. He played baseball as a young man and switched to softball when he started coaching his daughters and grandchildren in youth baseball and softball. He coached women's and men's softball teams. He played softball in the St. Mary's County Men's Softball League and belonged to the St. Mary's County Softball Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Frankie and Sally loved to travel with family and friends. They took many camping trips to Virginia, Tennessee and the Carolinas. They visited Hawaii, Las Vegas, California and this allowed them to experience there first plane ride. They loved cruises and bus trips south along the east coast and the Caribbean, creating many wonderful memories and stories he liked to tell. He loved the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM with prayers recited at 7:00PM in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, Leonardtwon, MD.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 10:00AM in Holy Angels Catholic Church, Avenue, MD, with Father Charles Cortinovis officiating. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens, Leonardtown, MD.

Dorothy Garner "Dottie" Moorefield, 72, of Hughesville, MD, (formerly of Clinton, MD), passed away June 22, 2014 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Hospital, in Baltimore, MD.
Born on March 11, 1942, she was the daughter of the late Robert Ignatius Garner and Dorothy Virginia Wible Garner.
Dorothy married her husband, Tommy Ray Moorefield, on July 30, 1966 at St. John's Catholic Church in Hollywood, MD. They were married for over forty-seven years. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles and antiquing.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Tommy Ray Moorefield, and her children Brian Raymond Moorefield (Hope) of Crofton, MD, Michael Robert Moorefield of Upper Marlboro, MD, Sheila Moorefield Norlin (Bernie) of Lorton, VA, and Sharon Lee Moorefield of Falls Church, VA; her sisters, Brenda Alvey of Mechanicsville, MD, Elaine Quade of Hollywood, MD, and a brother, Robert Garner of California, MD; her grandchildren, Hayley Nicole Norlin, Cara Marie Norlin and Emerson Grace Moorefield.
Family will receive friends on Sunday, June 29, 2014 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., with prayers at 4:00 p.m. at Brinsfield Funeral Home, P.A., 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650.
