Donald R. Pennington
HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Donald Ray Pennington, 64, of Blue Ridge Acres, Harpers Ferry, died Friday, Jan. 31, 1997, at the Veterans Medical Center in Baltimore.
Born July 11, 1932, in Carroll County, Va., he was the son of Mamie Sharp Pennington, of Jefferson, N.C., and the late Avery Pennington.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Scrutton Pennington, on Nov. 21, 1992.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, he served from 1952-1980, retiring with the rank of senior master sergeant.
He received a number of commendations, including the Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Service Medal with Eight Bronze Service Stars, Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and Campaign Medal.
He was a member of Camp Springs Lodge 227, A.F.&A.M. of Camp Springs, Md., and Jefferson County Memorial Post 3522 of the VFW of Charles Town, W.Va.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by five daughters, Beverly Campbell of Winter Springs, Fla., Sharon Pennington, Carolyn Williams, and Elaine Schrift, all of Harpers Ferry, and Donna Adams of Glen Burnie, Md.; one son, Steven Pennington of Deale, Md.; two sisters, Mary Wyatt of Jefferson, N.C., and Grace Teaster of Charlotte, N.C.; two brothers, Robert Pennington and Earl Pennington, both of Jefferson, Md.; and 11 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother Howard Pennington.
Services with full military honors will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Arlington National Cemetery, in Arlington, Va. An Air Force Chaplain from Arlington National Cemetery will officiate. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.

Robert G. Bruce
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Robert Gunning Bruce, 72, of 11 Deerview Lane, Asheville, Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community, died Sunday, Dec. 22, 1996.
A native of Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late William Motter Bruce Jr. and Stella Gunning Bruce.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School, and a forestry graduate of West Virginia University.
He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II. He was a member of the ROTC in college, and was a first lieutenant in the Army Reserves.
He was employed with the Boy Scouts of America as a field scout executive with the Hagerstown and Roanoke, Va., councils and directed summer camp in both areas. He was an Eagle Scout.
He joined the National Park Service, Department of the Interior, in 1958, and was a park ranger at Colonial National Historic Park, Virginia, and a park naturalist at Rock Creek Nature Center, National Capitol Parks, Washington, D.C. He became chief park naturalist at Crater Lake National Park, Oregon, in 1966 and transferred to the Blue Ridge Parkway in Roanoke in 1969 and in Asheville in 1972. He retired as chief of interpretation in 1985. He was parkway representative in founding the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in Roanoke and in Asheville.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church.
He also was a member of Blue Ridge Bird Club.
He is survived by his wife, Georgina Royer Bruce; two daughters, Suzanne Bruce Hedden of Leicester, N.C., and Sally Bruce Withers of Swannanoa, N.C.; one son, William Motter Bruce of Charlotte, N.C.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William Motter Bruce III.
A memorial service was held at Grace Episcopal Church. The Rev. William G. Edwards officiated.

Franklin T. Offutt Sr.
DRY RUN, Pa. - Franklin Thomas Offutt Sr., 55, of 18537 Dry Run Road South, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at University Hospital/Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.
Born Oct. 28, 1941, in Poolesville, Md., he was the son of Linwood T. and Helen Walter Offutt of Frederick, Md.
He was a 1959 graduate of Frederick High School.
He was a dairy farmer in the Frederick/Middletown area until moving to Pennsylvania to farm in 1976.
He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Chambersburg, Pa.
He also was a member of the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers and the Franklin County Farm Bureau.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Ruth White Offutt; one daughter, Sandra Lee Offutt of Chambersburg; two sons, Michael Offutt of Frederick, and F. Thomas Offutt of Doylesburg, Pa.; two sisters, Virginia Miller of Frederick, and Arlene Roderick of Ijamsville, Md.; two brothers, Linwood T. Offutt Jr. of Frederick, and Charles E. Offutt of Richlands, N.C.; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Eugene Offutt.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, with the Rev. John R. Campion, as celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in Frederick.
A viewing will be held today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home Inc., 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. A rosary will be recited today at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donald M. Leicht
KEEDYSVILLE - Donald Melvin Leicht, 65, of 6455 Coffman Farms Road, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at his home.
Born March 4, 1931, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Arthur Edward and Emma L. Welch Leicht.
He was a collector salesman with Walker-Thomas Furniture Co. in Washington, D.C., retiring after 23 years.
He was a member of Harrendale Presbyterian Church in Glen Burnie, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Leicht; one son, Arthur Edward Leicht of Hagerstown; two sisters, Elsie Dillman of Baltimore and Lorraine Keegan of Glen Burnie; and four brothers, Raymond Leicht of Mechanicsville, Md., and Gilbert Leicht, Norman Leicht and Kenneth Leicht, all of Baltimore.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Arthur Leicht and Vernon Leicht.
Services will be held Wednesday in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. James G. Kirk will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Keedysville.

Reba J. Tordiff
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Reba Jean Tordiff, 75, of Bunker Hill, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, at her home.
Born May 14, 1921, in Ironton, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late William and Mabel Starke Fairchild.
She was a member of Central Christian Church, Ironton.
She is survived by her husband, Ervin E. Tordiff; one daughter, Judy Kay Lloyd of Winchester, Va.; three sisters, Mary Lou Hughes of Ironton, Susie Carr of Columbus, Ohio, and Kathleen Goodner of Hastings, Mich.; four brothers, Billy Fairchild, Paul Fairchild, Dr. Kenneth Fairchild and Glenn Fairchild, all of Ironton; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. Leroy K. Hurley Jr., evangelist, will officiate. Burial will be in Paynes Chapel Cemetery.

Roy C. Potts
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Roy C. Potts, 87, of 312 Northfield Ave., Waynesboro, died Monday, Feb. 3, 1997, in Waynesboro Hospital. Death was attributed to heart failure.
Born Feb. 4, 1909 in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Roy L. and Ada A. Wilhide Potts.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen A. Gourley Potts, on June 13,1989.
He received his G.E.D. from Waynesboro High School.
He retired in 1971 from Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro after 32 years. Prior to his retirement he was a supervisor in the machine shop.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Waynesboro.
He was a member of National AARP, National Rifle Association, and a life member of Mechanics S.F.&E. & Hose Co. No. 1 in Waynesboro, serving on various committees.
He is survived by three sisters, Armatha K. Helm, Mildred A. Potts, and Vivian J. Biser, all of Waynesboro; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Helen Lohman, Lucille Gourley, Florence Potts and Naomi Potts; four brothers, Donald Potts, Russell Potts, James Potts and Guy Potts.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Jay A. Saxe will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Norman N. Hose
Norman Nevin Hose, 69, of 37 N. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born July 10, 1927, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Charles Daniel and Amanda Doyle Griffin Hose.
He owned and operated Norman's Barber Shop before retiring in 1986.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Goodwill Little Club of Hagerstown, Cascade Post 14 AMVETS and Conococheague Tribe 84 IORM.
He is survived by one sister, Virginia L. Davis of Williamsport; four brothers, Speener M. Hose of Hagerstown, Kenneth G. Hose of Bloomsburg, Pa., Gwaylon L. Hose of Williamsport, and Duward E. Hose of Martinsburg; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Hose, Thelma I. Beattie, and Sarah F. Hose; and one brother, Charles E. Hose.
A memorial service will be held today at 7 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. James E. Swecker will officiate. Burial will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Riverview Cemetery in Williamsport.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today at the conclusion of services until 9 p.m. The funeral home will be open after 9 a.m. today for the convenience of family and friends.

Wanda J. Kaese
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Wanda J. Kaese, 72, of 90 W. Main St., Apartment 2-C, died of heart failure Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at Franklin County Nursing Home in Chambersburg, Pa.
Born Jan. 12, 1925, in Waynesboro, she was the daughter of the late Harry A. and Margaret C. Knepper Lohman.
She was a 1943 graduate of Waynesboro High School and a graduate of Waynesboro Business College.
She was a secretary for various area industries. She was the first female employee at Site R, Fort Ritchie.
Early in life, she was a member of Calvary Assembly of God Church in Waynesboro.
She is survived by one son, Kent K. Kaese of Waynesboro; one sister, Learia A. Mowen of Waynesboro; three brothers, Conway K. Lohman of Waynesboro, Eldren B. Lohman of Tempe, Ariz., and Jere L. Lohman of Herndon, Va.; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry "Bud" Lohman and Barry T. Lohman.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Walter A. Stuart will officiate. Burial will be in Quincy Cemetery.
