Ethel L. Spidle
Ethel Louise Spidle, 80, of West Baltimore Street, Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at Fahrney-Keedy Home, Boonsboro.
Born May 11, 1916, in Williamson, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late William A. and Nellie V. Bancord Grove.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles H. Shantz, in 1964; and second husband, Franklin L. Spidle, in 1985.
She is survived by three daughters, Dorlene S. Styles Keefer of Kentucky, Phyllis T. Thompson and Beverly J. Long, both of Hagerstown; one son, Charles Thomas Shantz of Boonsboro; four sisters, Eva Holland of Williamsport, Bertha Guessford Lohman and Alice Davis, both of Hagerstown, and Stella Whitehead of Oklahoma; one brother, Earl Grove of Fairplay; one half-sister, Mae Shoemaker of Florida; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Oscar Grove.
Memorial services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Fahrney-Keedy Chapel, Boonsboro. The Rev. Willard F. Rahn will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Walter H. Butts
Walter Harold "Teet" Butts, 86, a resident of Clearview Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of 3602 Harpers Ferry Road, Sharpsburg, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 5, 1910, in Bakerton, W.Va., he was the son of the late George and Annie Dodson Butts.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Genevieve Butts, in 1993.
He was formerly employed by Standard Lime and Stone Co. in Bakerton, W.Va., and Martinsburg, W.Va.; Hagerstown Shoe Co.; Waynesboro Shoe Co.; and Potomac Die and Finishing of Hagerstown.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army. He participated in the Normandy invasion and received the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a life member and past commander of Antietam Post 236 American Legion in Sharpsburg.
He is survived by two daughters, Geneva L. Boyer and Peggy J. Baker, both of Boonsboro; one son, Harold A. Butts of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Helen S. Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Sharpsburg.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Howard W. Young Jr.
Howard Wesley Young Jr., 68, of 1208 Wayne Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 1, 1929, in Washington, Pa., he was the son of the late Howard Wesley and Lola Emma Warrell Young Sr.
He was employed by United Insurance Co. of America and retired in 1994.
He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church.
He was a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42, Longmeadow Senior Bowling League and Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Anna E. "Betty" Young; two daughters, Susan J. Young and Cheryl D. Young Ruck, both of Hagerstown; one sister, Evelyn Ruschel of Washington, Pa.; three brothers, Robert Young of Menter, Ohio, Donald Young of Hagerstown, and Richard Young of Washington; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Larry Wayne Young; and three sisters, Louise Yodder, Lois Young and Shirley Burns.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Harold P. Atkins will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

John Chungo
John Chungo, 74, of 1316 W. Church St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 6, 1997, at his home.
Born Oct. 14, 1922, in Homer City, Pa., he was the son of the late Steven and Catherine Sasala Chungo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna J. Chungo, in 1986.
He retired from Mack Trucks.
He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He was a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42 and Knights of Columbus.
He is survived by two sons, John S. Chungo of Sterling, Va., and Gerald P. Chungo of Cumberland, Md.; one sister, Mary Ozamock of Pittsburgh; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, Walter Gostowski.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George A. Limmer will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
There will be no viewing.

Ethel Charmley
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ethel Charmley, 83, of Martinsburg, and formerly of Adin, Calif., died Sunday, Feb. 2, 1997, at Canterbury Nursing Home, Shepherdstown, W.Va.
Born Aug. 1, 1913, in Ethel, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Medard and Angelina Mussetto Albertazzie.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Charmley, in 1992.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by four nieces, Dr. Vocato George of Berza, Ohio, LeVeda Loroski of Clifton, Ohio, Lorraine Lemke of Adin and Sabian Simpson of Shepherdstown; five nephews, Edward E. Stout of Martinsburg, Earl Albertazzie of Morgantown, W.Va., Ralph Albertazzie of Hedgesville, W.Va., Michael Alberts of Shinnston, W.Va., and Alfred Gould Jr. of Weatherford, Texas.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and brothers.
A memorial service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church, 220 W. Martin St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Jack T. Sutor Jr. will officiate. Inurnment will be in the Chapel of Chimes Cemetery, Adin.

Esther P. Sweeney
KEEDYSVILLE - Esther Pauline Sweeney, 62, of 19372 Burnside Bridge Road, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at her home.
Born Feb. 26, 1934, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Harry Allen and Mary Elizabeth Clemons Breeden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Howell Sweeney, in 1976.
She retired after 25 years with Londontown Corp., Boonsboro.
She was a member of Christ Evangelical Reformed Church, Shepherdstown.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda K. Hawbaker of Hagerstown and Connie D. Sweeney of Boonsboro; two sons, William F. Nicewarner of Hagerstown and Edward H.C. Sweeney of Falling Waters, W.Va.; four sisters, Josephine Frye of Inwood, W.Va., Mary Stephens of Martinsburg, W.Va., Gerline Whirley of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Shelby Mose of Sharpsburg; two brothers, Ashly Junior Breeden and Paul Breeden, both of Shepherdstown, W.Va.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate. Burial will be in Boonsboro Cemetery.

Daniel B.F. Myers
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Daniel B.F. "Earl" Myers, 81, of Route 3, Box 224D, and formerly of Williamsport, died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 16, 1915, in Williamsport, he was the son of the late Robert Lincoln and Ida May Davis Myers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Elizabeth Bowers, in 1971.
He was employed by W.D. Byron Tannery until his retirement in 1976.
He attended Williamsport Assembly of God and most recently attended Hancock Assembly of God.
He was an avid squirrel hunter and gardener.
He is survived by four daughters, Yvonne B. Haynes of Berkeley Springs, with whom he resided, Peggy J. Harner of Hagerstown, Gloria E. Ruse of Williamsport and Barbara A. Rudolph of Falling Waters, W.Va.; two sons, the Rev. Donald L. Myers Sr. and Daniel E. Myers Sr., both of Hagerstown; two sisters, Ethel Hose of Hagerstown and Myra J. Taylor of Williamsport; three brothers, Paul Myers, the Rev. Kenneth Myers and Carl Myers, all of Williamsport; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Betty Jane Myers and Doris Marie Myers; one sister, Hazel Shank; and two brothers, Robert Myers and the Rev. Lester Myers.
Services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Williamsport Assembly of God. The Rev. Daniel A. Jordan and the Rev. Charles Helms will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

Robert L. Dunham Jr.
BUNKER HILL, W.Va. - Robert L. "Bobby" Dunham Jr., 39, of Bunker Hill, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 1997, at his home.
Born Oct. 19, 1957, in Martinsburg, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert L. Dunham Sr. and Eleanor Hull Dunham.
He was a member of Capon Valley Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by two sisters, Linda Lee Currington and Phyllis Dunham, both of Bunker Hill; two brothers, Michael R. Dunham of Bunker Hill and George Dunham of Toledo, Ohio; one niece; and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Sherry Painter.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
