Mildred K. Nowell
Mildred K. Nowell, 85, of 1009 Lindsay Lane, Hagerstown, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at Avalon Nursing Home, Hagerstown.
Born Sept. 30, 1911, in Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Rolla and Annie B. Grove Overcash.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Nowell, in 1976.
She was a member of Zion Reformed Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy L. Kauffman of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack D. Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home.
Evelyn V. Keller
Evelyn Virginia Keller, 88, of 428 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, who died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 1997, was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Lookabaugh; and two brothers, Richard Keller and Cecil Keller.
Howard H. Knode
Howard Haller Knode, 84, of 1114 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown, and formerly of Baltimore, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at Clearview Nursing Home.
Born July 9, 1912, in Keedysville, and raised in Sharpsburg, he was the son of the late Howard Clarence and Alta Jane Haller Knode.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian Lorraine Rohrer Knode, in 1981.
He was employed on various farms and agricultural facilities in Washington County for the Dorsey and Holmes families. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) in the mid-1930s during the Great Depression, serving in Snow Hill, Md. He was employed by several construction companies and was later employed at Koppers Metal Works, Baltimore, as a foundry worker. He retired as a foreman in 1975. He also was employed by the Washington County Board of Education as a part-time custodian, retiring in 1981.
A veteran of the 1st U.S. Army, he served with Company "C" of the 207th Combat Engineering Battalion during World War II. He participated in the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944, and the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944.
He was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
He is survived by one son, Galen Ward Knode of Annapolis; four sisters, Esther E. Cheney and Minerva L. Zimmerman, both of Hagerstown, V. Juanita Ralls of Melbourne, Fla., and Doris J. Reynold of Laurel, Md.; and one brother, Charles Frank Knode of Boonsboro.
Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. David B. Kaplan will officiate. Burial, with military honors by VFW 1936, will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Eastern Paralyzed Veterans.
Mary E. English
Mary E. English, 77, of Fahrney-Keedy Home and formerly of Blue Mt. Estates, Smithsburg, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 22, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Ruth Day Moats.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward F. English, in 1977.
She was a member of Welty Church of the Brethren, Greensburg, Md.
She is survived by four daughters, Betty L. Verdier of Smithsburg, Pearl E. Masser of Frederick, Mary J. Humelsine of Hagerstown and Harriet V. Downin of Keedysville; one son, Melvin G. Strite of Hagerstown; one stepsister, Laura Griffith of Hagerstown; one half-brother, William J. Gearhart of Hagerstown; 19 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, E. Ruth Martin; one brother, Charles Moats; and one stepsister, Margaret Myers.
Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Dean Mouk will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lon E. Ridenour
Lon Elwood Ridenour, 69, of Mount Lena Road, who died Monday, Feb. 10, 1997, is survived by a sister, Janice Ridenour Kendle of Mount Lena.
Edgar S. Wolfkill Jr.
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Edgar S. "Ed" Wolfkill Jr., 65, of 404 W. Eighth St., died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.
Born June 5, 1931, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Edgar S. Wolfkill Sr. and Mary Hawbaker Wolfkill Brubaker.
He was a 1949 graduate of Greencastle High School, Greencastle, Pa.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dottye B. Bennett Wolfkill, on Feb. 1, 1987. They were married in March 1962.
He was employed as a milk truck driver and later worked for the former Wolfkill's Vault Co., Hagerstown. He was an insurance agent and sold cars. He worked in the shops at Grove Manufacturing, Shady Grove. He was an announcer for WCBG Radio, Chambersburg, and WARK Radio, Hagerstown. He then worked for Channel 45 TV News in Altoona, Pa., and a TV station in York, Pa. as a newsperson.
In 1978, he returned to Grove Manufacturing in sales and training. Following his retirement he started Photronix Ed Wolfkill Associates, Waynesboro.
He was a member of the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren.
He also was a member and past master of Acacia Lodge 596 Free and Accepted Masons, Waynesboro, serving as master in 1983; was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the Fraternal Order of Police.
He is survived by a foster son, Randy T. Peiffer, Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; two sisters, Esther M. Smith of Waynesboro and Linda Alter-Dunn of Pasadena, Md.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Lee Wolfkill, and his stepfather, John Brubaker, in May 1993.
Services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Kenneth L. Gibble will officiate. Burial will be in Brown's Mill Cemetery, Kauffman Station.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Masonic memorial services will be conducted Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Ray S. Negley
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Ray S. Negley, 37, of 12215 Randy Drive, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 1997, at Village of Marks, Pa.
Born Jan. 6, 1960, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Clarence H. Jr. and Gail Nicarry Negley, of Mercersburg, Pa.
He was a 1978 graduate of James Buchanan High School, Mercersburg.
He had been employed by Robert Martin, Marion, Pa., as a farm hand. He also was employed by Zent Inc., Lemasters, Pa., as a milk truck driver. For the past nine years, he was employed as a truck mechanic by Antrim Diesel of Greencastle.
He was a former member of the Upton Church of the Brethren, Upton, Pa.
He was a member of Greencastle Sportsman's Association and the Greencastle Archery Club. He was a hunter.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Linda M. Shank of Hagerstown; five brothers, Roger A. Negley, Garnet E. Negley, Harry R. Negley, Jerry L. Negley, all of Mercersburg, and Dean E. Negley of Greencastle; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Upton Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Leon Meyers and the Rev. Duane Hawbaker will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg.
Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
Robert M. Strait
McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - Robert M. Strait, 63, of Route 2, McConnellsburg, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 1997, at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, Johnstown, Pa.
Born Sept. 9, 1933, in Taylor Township, Fulton County, Pa., he was the son of Vera Mae Black Strait of Hustontown, Pa., and the late Robert Glenn Strait.
He was a graduate of Chambersburg Business College. He trained for two years as an X-ray technician in Iowa.
He retired from Mack Trucks, Hagerstown, after 25 years.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served as a paratrooper and a medic.
He was of the Methodist faith.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association; Fulton County Pistol and Rifle Club; and the North American Hunting Club.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Ida Robinson Strait, whom he married in 1956; one daughter, Shari Mae Strait of Sebastian, Fla.; one son, Robert A. Strait of Big Cove Tannery, Pa.; three sisters, Mae Chilcote and Jane Carmack, both of Hustontown, and Louise Hoffman of Chambersburg, Pa.; one brother, Wendell Perry Strait of Hustontown; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by twin sons and three brothers.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at M.R. Brown Funeral Home, Hustontown. Pastor David Arnold will officiate.
Friends may call Saturday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
