Edna G. Cooper
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Edna G. Cooper, 71, of 454 Center St., and formerly of Goshen, Ind., died Saturday, Feb. 15, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Feb. 7, 1926, in Andover, Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William H. and Celia A. Mellott Deshong.
Services will be Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Richard B. Cartwright will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Alverda M. Strunk
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Alverda M. Strunk, 81, of 2269 Pine Grove Road, died Friday, Feb. 14, 1997, at her home.
Born Feb. 1, 1916, in Boyertown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Myron and Estella Shiery Conrad.
She was formerly employed by Berkshire Knitting Mill in Wyomissing, Pa., as a seamstress. She was retired.
She had been a member of Gilbertsville Fire Company's Ladies Auxiliary, Gilbertsville, Pa.
She is survived by her husband, Elton H. Strunk; two daughters, Carol Strunk, at home, and Ann Seyler of Greencastle, Pa.; two sons, Russell Weller Jr. of Oley, Pa., and Larry E. Strunk of Virginia Beach, Va.; one brother, Herbert Conrad of Gilbertsville; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Gloria Strunk; and two brothers.
Services will be private.
A visitation will be at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, Pa., Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Elmer C. Fredman
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Elmer Clifton Fredman, 84, of Berkeley Springs, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 1997, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs.
Born in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late George W. and Sarah Harden Fredman.
Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. John S. Ledford will officiate. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
There will be no visitation.

Tynya S. Sowers
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Tynya S. Sowers, 30, of 380 Westview Road, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 1997, at her home.
Born March 1, 1966, in Gettysburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Clarian Sowers Sr. and Susan Kriner Lau.
Services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Ann Gibble will officiate. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.
Visitation will be at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Joseph E. Semler
Joseph Edward Semler, 74, of 201 W. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born July 15, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Lewis E. and Blanche E. Barnes Semler.
He was employed by Victor C. Ditto for 44 years.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1936; AMVETS; and Goodwill Athletic Association.
He is survived by one brother, Robert Semler of Fairplay; one sister-in-law, Mae Bowers of Fairplay, with whom he resided; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Emma B. Burger, Marie Fouke and Ruth Upright; and one brother, Paul N. Semler.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Pastor John C. Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown. Graveside military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 1936.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Marianne B. Johnson
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Marianne B. Johnson, 63, of Shepherdstown, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at her home.
Born July 21, 1933, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of Fern V. Belt of Annandale, Va., and the late Harold M. Belt.
She was employed by the federal government for 36 years, retiring from the U.S. Army Materiel Command.
She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown.
She was a member of Pack Horse Ford Chapter D.A.R., Shepherdstown.
She was a genealogist.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Hunter D. Johnson; four sons, Danny Johnson Jr. of Martinsburg, W.Va., Michael Johnson of Roanoke, Va., Robert Johnson of Jane Lew, W.Va., and Charles Johnson of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Linda Lee of Annandale and Elizabeth Beck of Burke, Va.; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Tony Johnson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 216 S. Duke, Shepherdstown. The Rev. T. Matthew Rowgh will be celebrant. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown.
The family will receive friends at the church today from 7 to 9 p.m., where a wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

George P. Grantland
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - George P. Grantland, 89, of Virginia Beach, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Feb. 14, 1997, at Sentara Nursing Center, Virginia Beach.
Born June 27, 1907, in Wilmington, Del., he was the son of the late George E. and Sarah L. Permar Grantland.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Martin Grantland, in 1991.
He retired from Pennsylvania Railroad as a purchasing agent.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Hagerstown.
He is survived by one daughter, Janet C. Gross of Virginia Beach; one son, Charles W. Sleasman of Mechanicsville, Md.; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. Edward H. Heim will officiate.
There will be no visitation.

Richard Gibson
BOONSBORO - Richard Gibson, 79, of 8150 Mountain Laurel Road, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born July 16, 1917, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late John W. and Mary E. Cummins Gibson.
He attended Abilene Christian College in Abilene, Texas. He received his bachelor's degree with the first graduating class of George Pepperdine University, Los Angeles. He earned his master's degree at Columbia University, Washington, D.C.
In the early 1940s, he taught in the school for congressional pages at the U.S. Capitol.
He was employed in various federal departments, ending his 43-year career in the Veterans Administration where he was involved in building and refurbishing Veterans Administration hospitals.
He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
He was active in the affairs of the old 14th Street Church of Christ, later the 16th and Decatur Street Church, and served as deacon for many years.
He was active in Toastmasters International, and was a member of many organizations revolving around nature and historical subjects.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Franklin Gibson; one son, R. Dale Gibson of Greenbelt, Md.; one sister, Virgie White of Fort Washington, Md.; two brothers, Lucian Franklin of Rockville, Md., and B.M. Franklin of Mason, Texas; and cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. Evangelist Chesley E. Wooten will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
