Emma M. Bowles
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION, W.Va. - Emma Mae Bowles, 78, of Shenandoah Junction, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.
Born Nov. 22, 1918, in Cabin Creek, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Bessie Kirk.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wamon W. Bowles, in 1981.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by three daughters, Martha J. Simon of Petersburg, W.Va., Louise Bowers of Narrows, Va., and Loretta Bowles of Shenandoah Junction; seven sons, Charles Bowles of Shenandoah Junction, Billy Bowles, Walter Bowles, James Bowles and Roger D. Bowles, all of Charles Town, W.Va., Danny Bowles of Hedgesville, W.Va., and William D. Bowles of Ranson; four sisters, Joyce Kirk Patton, Betty Kirk Tucker, Riccie Kirk and Jean Kirk Morris, all of Charleston, W.Va.; three brothers, James Kirk, Gary Kirk and Jack Kirk, all of Charleston; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson. The Rev. Wyman E. Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
John N. Snively
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - John Norman Snively, 97, of Piney Mountain, Fayetteville, and formerly of 9936 Amsterdam Road, Waynesboro, Pa., died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born Jan. 22, 1900, in Washington Township, Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles and Laura May Hartman Snively.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara M. Koons Snively, on Feb. 7, 1987. They were married in October 1922.
He had been employed by various farmers in the area. He worked as a machinist for Wayne Tool Co., Waynesboro, until World War II. He then worked on his small farm. He also worked for Raymond Baer's Feed Mill and VanSant Grocery, Waynesboro, and Jesse Baer Fuel Oil Co. Prior to retiring, he worked at Frick Co., Waynesboro.
He was a member of the Gospel Chapel of Waynesboro.
He is survived by two daughters, LaRue Mentzer of Waynesboro and Delores Baer of Tulsa, Okla.; four sons, Weldon Snively and Leonard Snively, both of Waynesboro, Charles Snively of Marion, Pa., and Austin Snively of Tulsa; 19 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lela Barr; one half-brother, Wilbur Snively and two sisters.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Price's Church Cemetery, off Pa. 316 near Waynesboro.
There will be no public viewing.

Maria F.S. Angle
WILLIAMSPORT - Maria F. Schnebly Angle, 103, of Homewood Retirement Center, Williamsport, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, at her home.
Born Jan. 22, 1894, in Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of the late Harry M. and Elizabeth Downs Schnebly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Guy K. Angle, in 1989.
She was a 1913 graduate of Washington County High School.
She taught grades one through seven in Wilson, Md., from 1913 to 1916. She taught math at Clear Spring High School from 1916 to 1920.
She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Clear Spring, where she taught Sunday school for many years.
She was a former member of the Clear Spring Homemakers Club and the Women's Club of Hagerstown.
She is survived by one daughter, Frances A. Vanden of Charles Town, W.Va.; one sister, Catherine Bomberger of Lancaster, Pa.; two grandsons; one great-grandson; and two step-great-grandsons.
She was preceded in death by four sisters.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Willard F. Rahn will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul Cemetery, Clear Spring.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mildred M. Stenger
ALTOONA, Pa. - Mildred M. Stenger, 93, of Hillview Care Center, Altoona, and formerly of Roaring Spring, Pa., died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997, at the care center.
Born April 26, 1903, in Trenton, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Herman E. and Ada Hagaman Mason.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry C. Stenger, on Oct. 25, 1961. They were married on June 14, 1923.
She was a 1920 graduate of Williamsport High School.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Roaring Spring, where she was past president of The Trinity United Methodist Church Women, and past vice president of Altoona District United Methodist Women. She also was a Sunday school teacher and a former choir member.
She served for 10 years as matron at The Methodist Home for the Aged, Tyrone, Pa., which later became Epworth Manor. She was interim superintendent at the manor until March 1, 1962.
She was a 60-year member of The Roaring Spring Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. She was a volunteer at the Nason Hospital Gift Shop, Roaring Spring, and distributed mail in the hospital from 1963 until 1989.
She was a member of Church Women United of Roaring Spring and a touring member of The Roaring Spring Senior Citizens.
She enjoyed embroidering and cross-stitching.
She is survived by three daughters, Ada R. Adamski of Roaring Spring, Flora S. Brooks of Bellefonte, Pa., and Barbara S. Mingle of Martinsburg, Pa.; two sons, George M. Stenger of Akron, Ohio and Herman E. Stenger of Oak Park, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Harry Stenger and Wilbur Stenger.
Memorial services will be held Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mark Stamm will officiate. An Eastern Star service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery, Williamsport.
There will be no viewing or visitation.

Lloyd C. Shumaker
SMITHSBURG - Lloyd C. "Jack" Shumaker, 78, of Auburn Drive, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 1, 1918, in Nokesville, Va., he was the son of the late Jacob Franklin and Tessie Florence Mundy Shumaker.
He was a self-employed roofer.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He was a life member of VFW Post 1936, Hagerstown and Disabled American Veterans.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret E. Shumaker; one daughter, Shirlene St. Plerre; six sisters, Mabel Durbin, Margaret Aubrey, Pauline Bryant, Janet Beahm, Christine Potter and Grace Allison; one brother, John Samuel Shumaker; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Sharon Shumaker; and two brothers, Raymond Shumaker and Jacob Frank Shumaker.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. Pastor Jonathan D. Laye will officiate. Burial will be in Rocky Gap Veterans Cemetery, Flintstone, Md.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Charles R. Gehr Jr.
Charles Roman Gehr Jr., 75, of 11410 Englewood Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 1997, at his home.
Born May 21, 1921, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Charles Roman and Catherine Carl Gehr Sr.
He was a 1940 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
He was employed by Mack Trucks as a toolmaker for 22 years, retiring in 1983.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren, where he served on the church board and various committees. He also served as an usher and was co-financial secretary since 1984.
He was a member of BPO Elks 378; American Legion, Funkstown Post 211; the U.S.S. Butner Association; and AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Ann Harbaugh Gehr, whom he married on March 14, 1946; two sons, Carl Roderick "Rod" Gehr of Hagerstown and Eric "Randy" Gehr of Harrisonburg, Va.; one sister, Audrey Steele of Adelphi, Md.; and one granddaughter.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hagerstown Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Dean M. Miller will officiate. Private graveside services will be held Saturday at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Esther A. Ford
BOONSBORO - Esther Andujar Ford, 71, of 42 East Ave., Hagerstown, died Monday, Feb. 17, 1997, at Reeder's Memorial Home, Boonsboro.
Born Dec. 11, 1925, in Puerto Rico, she was the daughter of the late Juan and Eulalia Sanlauella Andujar.
She was supervisor of the military mess hall, Providence, R.I., for 17 years.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Providence.
She also was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary; the VFW Auxiliary; and the Amvets Auxiliary, all in Providence.
She is survived by one daughter, Nilza Young of Hagerstown; three sisters, Carmen Camocho of New York, Mildred Andujar and Lus Marie Andujar, both of Puerto Rico; one brother, Juan Andujar of Boston; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by eight sisters.
Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

Barbara E. Kelly
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Barbara Elizabeth Kelly, 58, of near Westminster, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1997, at Carroll County General Hospital.
Born Oct. 14, 1938, in Cumberland, Md., she was the daughter of the late Hazel L. Barnes and Wilber H. Miller.
She was a 1956 graduate of Sykesville High School. She also was a graduate of Frederick Community College of Nursing, where she received her degree and the designation of registered nurse.
She was employed at Carroll County General Hospital for 20 years. In 1978, she was assigned to learn and introduce primary-care nursing to the hospital. She worked with the engineers in the design implementation of the 2 North-West Wing, where she was nurse manager for the following eight years. For the past 11 years, she was a nursing manager at Springfield State Hospital Center in Sykesville.
In 1995, she and a colleague founded and established Springfield Hospital Museum.
She formerly taught Sunday school and was involved in youth activities in the church and Carroll County schools. She was a past member of Westminster and Taneytown, Md., Jaycettes and nursing and hospital programs.
She and her husband helped form the Maryland Gold Wings Inc. motorcycle touring club, and in 1989 she became the club's first female president. She was a member of Chapter K, Gold Wing Road Riders Association, where she and her husband were named Mr. and Mrs. Maryland in 1990.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Michael J. Kelly; three sons, David M. Kelly of Lisle, Ill., Aaron Kelly of Hagerstown and Jon Kelly of Westminster; three sisters, Jackie Talley of Sykesville, Helena Reaves of Welcome, N.C., and Becky Fralin of Eldersburg, Md.; two brothers, Roby Barnes III of Manchester, Md., and Jeffrey Barnes of Sykesville; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Bond and Green streets, Westminster. The Rev. Michael O. Simmons, assisted by Clayton Briley and the Rev. Stanley Janaites, chaplains, will officiate. Burial will be in St. James Dennings Methodist Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Myers Funeral Home, 91 Willis St., Westminster, today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.
