Clara E. Mellott
NEEDMORE, Pa. - Clara Esther Mellott, 94, of Route 1, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 1997, at Extended Care Fulton County Medical Center, McConnellsburg, Pa.
Born Sept. 2, 1902, in Sipes Mill, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Simon Daniels and Bertha Mellott Daniels.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Mellott, in 1951.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of the Nazarene, Harrisonville, Pa.
She is survived by two daughters, Goldie King of Chambersburg and Jean Swindell of Needmore; three sons, Simon A. Mellott of Chambersburg, William Mellott of Waynesboro, Pa., and Robert E. Mellott of Needmore; two sisters, Ethel Stevens of Chambersburg and Thelma Pettingill of Florida; two brothers, Ira Daniels of Needmore and L.D. Daniels of Chambersburg; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, one son and two grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Church of the Nazarene, Harrisonville.
The Rev. Dan Porterfield and the Rev. William Swope will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., Harrisonville, Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m. and at the church Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
John G. Amsley
MERCERSBURG, Pa. - John G. "Bucky" Amsley, 84, of 4329 Charlestown Road, died Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, at his home.
Born Dec. 22, 1912, in Mercersburg, he was the son of the late Ray and Emma Straley Amsley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Briggs Amsley, in 1989.
In his early life, he was employed by Lloyd Rockwell Logging.
He later worked for the former Mercersburg Tannery for 26 years and for a few years at Grove Worldwide.
He retired in 1966 after 10 years of service for the Tuscarora School District.
He attended First Pentecostal Assembly of God Church of Mercersburg.
He enjoyed woodworking.
He is survived by three daughters, Betty Bard of Chambersburg, Pa., Donna Shindle of Berlin, Md., and Phyllis Clever of Mercersburg; one son, Larry L. Amsley of Fort Loudon, Pa.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg.
The Rev. Clarence W. Dehart Jr. and the Rev. Willis I. Murray will officiate.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
There will be no viewing, however, the family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Kathleen B.B. Byron
SARASOTA, Fla. - Kathleen Bitner Basehoar Byron, 92, a resident of Plymouth Harbor Nursing Home, and formerly of Greencastle, Pa., died Saturday, Feb. 15, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born Feb. 7, 1905, in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Hal and Florence Fletcher Bitner.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dr. C.E. Basehoar; and second husband, James W. Byron.
She was owner for 37 years of the former Little Shop in Chambersburg, Pa.
She was a former member of Greencastle Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by three stepchildren, W. McClellan "Mac" Byron of Sebring, Fla., James Byron of Alabama, and Jean Terrentine of Fairfax, Va.; one sister, Martha B. Wolfinger of Greencastle; one niece; and three nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Louise B. Whitton; and one brother, L.H. Fletcher Bitner.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
The Rev. Rawley Boone will officiate.
There will be no viewing.
Local arrangements are by Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Greencastle.
Florence E. Theimer
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Florence E. Theimer, 77, a resident of Piney Mountain, and formerly of 4573 Coontown Road, Chambersburg, Pa., died Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997, at Piney Mountain.
Born June 22, 1919, in Kaukauna, Wis., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Ella Krebser Schmitt.
A memorial mass will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg.
The Rev. Daniel F. Lawler will be celebrant.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Kaukauna.
There will be no viewing.

John M. Long
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - John M. Long, 71, of 13281 Mentzer Gap Road, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.
Born Feb. 8, 1926, near Thurmont, Md., he was the son of the late Franklin M. and Carrie Grabill Long.
He attended Creagerstown, Md., schools.
He operated a dairy farm from 1959 to 1962 in Poolesville, Md., and then owned and operated a farm in Jefferson, Md., from 1962 through 1966.
Prior to retiring in 1975, he owned and operated a dairy farm in Ringgold.
Following his retirement, he owned and trained race horses mostly in West Virginia at Charles Town Race Track and did some blacksmith work.
He attended St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Creagerstown.
He was a member of West Virginia Racing Commission, Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, and Western Maryland Jousting Club Inc.
He is survived by three daughters, Lola M. Bittner of Rouzerville, Pa., Betty Irene Long of Finksburg, Md., and Carol Ann Wantz of Ranson, W.Va.; two sons, Celius M. Long of Charles Town and Johnnie M. Long of Vinton, La.; four sisters, Shirley Claybaugh of Rocky Ridge, Md., Catherine Culler of Golfport, Fla., Virginia Ann Fleming of Woodbine, Md., and Naomi L. Cassaday of Fort Worth, Texas; one brother, Robert B. Long of Thurmont; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a companion, Ethel Mae Green of Waynesboro; one aunt; one uncle; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James K. Long.
Services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
Pastor Janet I. Comings will officiate.
Burial will be in Creagerstown Cemetery, Creagerstown.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Nellie Ray Canby, 84, of Hedgesville, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born June 25, 1912, in Hedgesville, she was the daughter of the late Elzie G. and Vallie Mae Tedrick Wood.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Independent Bible Church, Hedgesville Road, Martinsburg.

Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Doris L. Pitzer, 80, of Hedgesville, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 1997, in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Jan. 11, 1917, in Hedgesville, she was the daughter of the late John and Alice Slaughter Vermiyea.
Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Hedgesville Cemetery.

Ruth H. Bearden
Ruth H. Bearden, 77, of 17217 Cloverleaf Road, Hagerstown, and formerly of Senoia, Ga., died Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, at her home.
She was born March 24, 1919, in Fayette County, Ga.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Bearden, in 1987.
She retired from Southern Bell in Atlanta after 32 years.
She was a member of the Methodist Church, Senoia.
She is survived by one daughter, Elaine Evans and son-in-law, Dexter Evans Sr. of Hagerstown, with whom she resided; one sister, Claire Loyd of Jonesboro, Ga.; two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Senoia City Cemetery, Senoia.
