Melvin E. Chilcote
Melvin E. Chilcote, 75, of 18930 Crofton Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Feb. 26, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born June 2, 1921, in Orville, Ohio, he was the son of the late Arthur and Gertrude Hower Chilcote.
Before his retirement, he was an engineer with Martin Marietta Co. in Baltimore. He previously worked for Fairchild Industries and Gulfstream.
In 1948, he was a sales representative with the advertising department of The Herald-Mail Co.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps in the South Pacific.
He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion; William D. Byron Post 1936 VFW; B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378; Williamsport Redmen Lodge 84; and AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley M. Copley Chilcote; one son, Mark E. Chilcote of Annapolis; two stepsons, Gary Burger of Chambersburg, Pa., and Rodney Burger of Baltimore; four brothers, Ralph Chilcote of Kennebunkport, Maine, Robert Chilcote of Wickenburg, Ariz., Floyd Chilcote of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Lester Chilcote of Good Springs, Nev.; seven step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will officiate. Graveside military services will be conducted by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.
Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

Marshall I. Moser
SABILLASVILLE, Md. - Marshall Isaac Moser, 95, of 17056 Sabillasville Road, who died Monday, Feb. 24, 1997, was the son of the late Louis Moser and Ellen V. Hayes Moser-Duncan.
He is survived by one granddaughter and one great-grandson.
William F. Eppinger
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - William Frederick Eppinger, 72, of Berkeley Springs, died Saturday, March 1, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born March 4, 1924, in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Harold and Gladys May Beeler Eppinger.
He attended Waterview School, Morgan County.
He was employed as a welder and mechanic by U.S. Silica, Berkeley Springs, until his retirement in 1986 after 28 years of service.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Seaman Second Class.
He was a lifelong member of Highland United Methodist Church, Morgan County.
He also was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, Berkeley Springs for more than 35 years; and the AARP.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kathryn Louise Rankin Eppinger; one daughter, Carol Sue Eppinger Suker of Cascade; five sisters, Geraldine R. "Becky" Ruppenthal, Julia M. McBee, Ruth M. Miller, Helen J. Younker and Evelyn F. Stotler, all of Berkeley Springs; two brothers, Herbert L. Eppinger of Berkeley Springs and Philip B. Eppinger of Winchester, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Joyce Eppinger and one brother, Richard H. Eppinger.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Mary Gebe Stevens and the Rev. Hennis H. Fox will officiate. Burial, with full military graveside honors conducted by the Tri-State Honor Guard, will be in Greenway Cemetery, Berkeley Springs.
The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. The funeral home will be open today from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. for the convenience of friends.

Carolyn D. Grantham
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Carolyn Denise Grantham, 36, of Martinsburg, died Friday, Feb. 28, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born Nov. 3, 1960, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of Elbie and Lucy Cooper Heath of Shepherdstown, W.Va.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Kingdom Hall Jehovah's Witness, Martinsburg.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Brian W. Grantham; one daughter, Barbara Denise Grantham at home; six sisters, Lisa M. Clinton and LaToya L. Heath, both of Shepherdstown, Eleanor E. Heath, Debra L. Heath and Ella R. Pineda, all of Martinsburg and Patricia K. Molina of Charles Town, W.Va., and three brothers, Tony D. Cooper of Pennsylvania, Carl F. Cooper and Elbie Heath Jr., both of Martinsburg.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home. Elder William Shorts will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Louise L. Hall
HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Louise LaBree Hall, 79, of Harpers Ferry, died Saturday, March 1, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Dec. 23, 1917, in Thief River Falls, Minn., she was the daughter of the late W. Jesse and Alice Carey LaBree.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert I. Hall, on May 5, 1975.
She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Thief River Falls.
She was employed by the U.S. Military Traffic Management Command Office, Virginia, until her retirement after 38 years of service.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Charles Town, W.Va.
She also was a member of Shannondale Club, Ltd., the Women's Club of Shannondale and the AARP. She was a chapter member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
She is survived by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church. The Rev. Bert Valdes will officiate. Burial will be in St. Peters Catholic Cemetery, Harpers Ferry.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home.
Rev. William W. Beale
The Rev. William Wentling Beale, 84, of 1146 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at Ravenwood Nursing Home.
Born Aug. 15, 1912, in Keyser, W.Va., he was the son of the late Albert L. and Myrtle F. Beale.
He was a 1930 graduate of Keyser High School. He was licensed to preach by the Methodist Church in 1939.
He was a 1945 graduate of Potomac State College. In 1947, he was awarded an A.B. degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va. He received a Bachelor of Divinity degree in 1951 from Westminster Theological Seminary in Westminster, Md.
In 1973, he received the Master of Sacred Theology degree from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.
He served as a pastor in the following West Virginia communities: Circleville, Headsville, Mount Clare, Buckhannon and Martinsburg. In Maryland, he served in Randallstown, LaPlata, Baltimore, Seat Pleasand and at Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, where he retired in 1977.
He served six years at Union Chapel, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., following his retirement. He served actively on numerous district committees in the United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Phillips Beale, whom he married on March 1, 1930; one daughter, Helene M. Frazier of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. John H. Williams, district superintendent, the Rev. Al Clipp and the Rev. Marcus Earp will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Maggie E. Jarvis
Maggie E. Jarvis, 91, of 622 Summit Ave., Hagerstown, and formerly of Mentzer Gap Road, Waynesboro, Pa., died Sunday, March 2, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 30, 1905, in Chactaw County, Miss., she was the daughter of the late William A. and Sarah K. Weatherall Draper.
She was preceded in death by her husband, R.B. Jarvis, in 1965.
She was a member of Rock Hill Methodist Church, Pickens, Miss.
She is survived by one daughter, Nora M. Welch of Hagerstown; two sisters, Gladys Fowler and Ruth Haynes, both of Pickens; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. Victor Zuck will officiate.
Visitation will be at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Evelyn B. Hartle
Evelyn B. Hartle, 98, formerly of 310 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, March 1, 1997, at Reeders Memorial Home, Boonsboro.
Born Nov. 24, 1898, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Elias B. and Nettie Keiffer Hartle.
She was a 1921 graduate of Washington Sanitarium and Hospital, Takoma Park, Md.
She was a retired registered nurse. She spent most of her nursing career in the Washington, D.C., area.
She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She is survived by two nephews, Donald Seibert of Baltimore and Calvert Hartle of Orlando, Fla.; and two friends, Jane Berlin of Hagerstown and Hazel Evans of Smithsburg, both of whom took care of her.
Services will be announced later by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown.
