Elizabeth M. K. Bowers
PURCELLVILLE, Va. - Elizabeth Mae Kelbaugh Bowers, 67, of 11332 Russell Road, Purcellville, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, at the home of her mother, Anna Coulter Kelbaugh, of Weaverton, Md.
Born Feb. 3, 1930, in Yarrowsburg, she was the daughter of Anna Coulter Kelbaugh and the late George N. Kelbaugh.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Floyd C. Baker; and by her second husband, Joseph Bowers.
She was a retired waitress.
She was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren, Brownsville.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one daughter, Kandi Baker of Myakka, Fla.; one son, Clifton Baker of Purcellville; two brothers, Larry Kelbaugh of Weaverton and Frank Kelbaugh of Brownsville; and two grandsons.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Lorraine Kelbaugh Hardy, and one brother, Sherman Kelbaugh.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Brownsville Church of the Brethren. The Rev. R. Thomas Fralin Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Old Brethren Cemetery, Brownsville.
Friends will be received today and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at John T. Williams Funeral Home, 100 Petersville Road, Brunswick, Md. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Martha M. Myers
LEMASTERS, Pa. - Martha M. Myers, 85, of 4773 Lemar Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, at her home.
Born Feb. 21, 1912, in Shippensburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Clark and Martha Mae Cope Martin.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene G. Myers, on March 2, 1982.
She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Lemasters.
She was a member of Farm Women's Group 5 of Lemasters and Mercersburg, Pa. She was a former member of Order of Amaranth and Order of Eastern Star.
She is survived by one son, Aaron Clark "AC" Myers of Lemasters; one sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Moore of Hagerstown; and two grandsons, Erick S. Myers of Baltimore and Duane S. Myers of Lemasters.
She was preceded in death by a twin sister, Mary C. Guyer; one other sister; and four brothers.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in St. Paul's United Church of Christ. The Rev. Douglas N. Hodges and the Rev. Martin Rudolph will officiate. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family in Spring Grove Cemetery, Lemasters.
There will be no viewing or visitation. The family requests the omission of flowers and suggests memorial donations be made to St. Paul's United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 105, Lemasters, Pa. 17231.

Clifford E. May Sr.
SMITHSBURG - Clifford E. May Sr., 86, of Fritz Lane, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born in Peoria, Ill., he was the son of the late Jacob and Lena Stiner May.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Loretta Husky May, in 1961.
He was employed by the Rock Island Railroad and Frick Co., Waynesboro, Pa.
He was a member of Welty Church of the Brethren, Greensburg, Md.
He is survived by his wife, Isabel A. Garnand Fritz May; three daughters, Virginia Kelly, Lorene Frazer, and Becky Scott, all of East Moline, Ill.; one son, Clifford E. May Jr. of East Moline; three stepdaughters, Dorothy Martin of Smithsburg, and Shirley Harne and Susan Cline, both of Hagerstown; four stepsons, Robert Fritz of Clear Spring, David Fritz of Waynesboro, Richard Fritz of Smithsburg and Winston Fritz of Hancock; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Larry May.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. Dean Mouk will officiate. Burial will be in Welty Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

Clifton E. Haines
RANSON, W.Va. - Clifton Eugene Haines, 69, of Ranson, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born Dec. 18, 1927, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late George William and Katherine B. Ritter Haines.
He was employed by Hampton Homes Construction Co., Charles Town, W.Va., where he was manager of their laundromats. He had been employed by Halltown Paperboard Co., Halltown, W.Va., and Shenandoah Lanes Bowling Alley, Charles Town.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.
He was a member of Engle United Methodist Church, Engle, W.Va.
He also was a member of Moose Lodge 948, Charles Town. He was past secretary of Upper Shenandoah Valley Bowlers Association.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Iona C. Fraley Haines; two daughters, LaVern L. Armel of Ranson and Deborah J. Wilson of Charles Town; two sons, Donald E. Haines of Ranson and William N. Haines of Charles Town; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin H. Haines.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Pastor Michael Withem will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.
Friends will be received today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Edward J. Rider
Edward Joseph Rider, 77, of 19917 Sheridan Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at Avalon Manor Nursing Home.
Born April 22, 1919, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Joseph S. and Theresa E. Miltenberger Rider.
He was employed by Nabisco, retiring in 1981 after 40 years of service.
He served in the armed forces during World War II and the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Hagerstown.
He also was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, Hagerstown; 40-8 Voitur 164, Cumberland, Md.; Knights of Columbus Pangborn Chapter, Hagerstown; and BPO Elks Lodge 378, Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen "Bettie" Rider; one daughter, Mary Ellen Rider of Bristol, Tenn.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Edna E. Close.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Cumberland. The Rev. Ed Manalis will be celebrant. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Cumberland.

Carl B. Hummel Jr.
Carl Bernhard Hummel Jr., 19, of 11135 Lakeside Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 12, 1977, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of Carl B. Hummel Sr. and the stepson of Beverly Kay Hummel, of Hagerstown.
He was a former student at Marshall Street Education Center.
In addition to his father and stepmother, he is survived by one sister, Dawn Michele Hummel at home; one stepbrother, Robert Allen Hartwick of Hancock; paternal grandparents, William and Barbara Hummel of Hagerstown; maternal stepgrandparents, Donald and Veriee Weller of Hancock; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Burial will be in Glen Haven Cemetery, Glen Burnie, Md.

BOONSBORO - A memorial service for Evelyn B. Hartle, 98, of Reeder Memorial Home, Boonsboro, and formerly of 310 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, will be held Wednesday, March 26, at 2 p.m. at Reeder Memorial Home, Boonsboro. The Rev. Royce Simpson will officiate.
Allen Tosten
CLEAR SPRING - Allen Tosten, 73, of 14103 Fairview Road, died Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 29, 1923, in Kasiesville, Pa., he was the son of the late Allen C. and Carrie Rock Tosten.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl V. Smith Tosten, on Sept. 3, 1992.
He was a former employee of Hagerstown Rubber Co. and Ressiner Manufacturing Co., both of Hagerstown. He was last employed as a truck driver by Craig Paving, Hagerstown. He retired in 1990.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.
He attended Maple Grove Church of God, Mercersburg, Pa.
He hunted.
He is survived by one daughter, Vonnie Crider of Fayetteville, Pa.; one son, David M. Tosten of Hagerstown; two sisters, Janet Chaney and Mary Trumpower, both of Clear Spring; four grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Levena Trumpower.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg, Pa. The Rev. Billy L. Clark and the Rev. Marlin Mauk will officiate. Burial will be in Welsh Run Brethren Cemetery, Welsh Run, Pa.
There will be no viewing. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
Paul W. Burger
QUINCY, Pa. - Paul W. Burger, 85, of Bossler Hall, Quincy United Methodist Home, died Tuesday, March 4, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.
Born Jan. 3, 1912, in Quincy, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Ella Whitmore Burger.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther E. Main Burger, whom he married in August, 1938.
He was a 1931 graduate of Waynesboro High School. He graduated from Western Maryland University in 1935, receiving his bachelor of science degree in English and social studies. He received his master's degree in 1936 from Columbia University, New York City.
He was employed as a teacher in Quincy Township schools and later in the Waynesboro school district. Prior to retiring in 1974, he taught in Washington County schools.
He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Waynesboro.
He also was a member of Acacia Lodge 586, Free and Accepted Masons, Waynesboro; Maryland and National Retired Teachers associations and the National Education Association.
He is survived by one son, Stephen P. Burger of Edmonds, Wash.; three grandchildren; and cousins.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Chaplain C. Albert Guyer will officiate. Burial will be in Price's Church Cemetery, near Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
