Mildred E.K. Powell
MONT ALTO, Pa. - Mildred E. Kauffman Powell, 80, of 9 Willow St., died Thursday, March 13, 1997, at her home.
Born May 30, 1916, in South Mountain, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry and Minnie Rider Kauffman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Max H. Powell, on April 8, 1978.
They were married Oct. 2, 1934.
She attended school in South Mountain.
She was employed in the laundry department of Samuel Dixon State Hospital, South Mountain.
She was a member of Waynesboro Bible Church and the adult Sunday school class of the church.
She was a charter member of the Cal Ripken Museum, Aberdeen, Md.
She is survived by three daughters, Bonnie L. Davenport of Fort Loudon, Pa., Leah M. Hovis of Mont Alto and Carolyn A. Powell of Quincy, Pa.; six sons, Max E. Powell, William E. Powell and Gerald L. Powell, all of Waynesboro, Edward L. Powell of St. Thomas, Pa., James R. Powell of Quincy and Michael J. Powell of Mont Alto; five sisters, Hazel Loudenslager of Quincy, Ada Ulrich of Fayetteville, Pa., Violet Bartlette of Greencastle, Pa., Joan Miller of Leesburg, Va., and Mary Carbaugh of Waynesboro; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda K. Powell; one brother, Rennis Kauffman and one half-sister, Virginia Schaeffer.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Robert Fitz will officiate.
There will be no public viewing.
The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Kenneth W. Britton Sr.
INWOOD, W.Va. - Kenneth W. Britton Sr., 71, of Route 2, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at his home under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.
Born Feb. 7, 1926, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Robert W. and Madeline Braithwaite Britton Sr.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
The Rev. Harold O. Snyder will officiate.
Burial will be in Rest Cemetery, Frederick County, Va.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Henry W. Kiel II
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Henry W. "Hank" Kiel II, 81, of 1526 Siloam Road, died Thursday, March 13, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Feb. 25, 1916, in St. Louis, he was the son of the late Clarence and Corinne Roulston Kiel.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
He began his military career in 1940 as a lieutenant after attending St. Louis University and Missouri Military Academy.
He served in the Aleutian Island campaign, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe campaigns.
He received a Purple Heart and was a P.O.W. for six months in Germany while serving with the 106th Division during the Battle of the Bulge.
After retiring as a major from the military, he entered civilian employment at Mt. Rainier Ordinance Depot, Tacoma, Wash., where he was an installation personnel officer. He went to Letterkenny Army Depot in 1964 until retiring with 30 years federal service, which included one year as civilian personnel officer in Saigon, Vietnam from 1969-70.
He was a member of Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring.
He was a member of Full Gospel Business Members Fellowship International; BPOE 600; Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW; Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge; T.R.O.A.; and AARP.
He was active with scouting, he helped with Cub Scouts and Troop 127. He served as past president and on the board of directors of O.S.I. and was past president of United Housing.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, P. Janet Donely Kiel; two daughters, Jaye Kiel of Fayetteville, Pa., and Jacalyn Ann Bunker of Chambersburg; one son, John H. Kiel of Fayetteville; and three grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday, March 18, at 11 a.m. at Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, 221 N. Main St., Chambersburg.
The Rev. William H. Harter and the Rev. Linda B. Harter will officiate.
Burial will be Thursday, March 20, at 9 a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
Visitation will be at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Gayl L.M. Kinney
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Gayl L. McConnell Kinney, 87, of 830 Eastland Road, died Wednesday, March 12, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.
Born Aug. 8, 1909, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late D.R. and Bess Fisher McConnell. She lived her early life in Hagerstown.
She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School.
She was employed by Potomac Edison in Hagerstown doing clerical work from 1931 to 1940.
Prior to her marriage, she entertained as a monologist at company parties and local clubs.
She was a member of the Church of the Apostles, Waynesboro.
She is survived by her husband, Osmond L. Kinney, whom she married on April 5, 1940; one daughter, Lucretia O. Kinney of Carrboro, N.C.; one brother, David R. McConnell of Waynesboro; and one niece.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence McConnell.
There will be no services.

Lloyd L. Rudy
LAND O' LAKES, Fla. - Lloyd L. Rudy, 80, of Land O' Lakes, died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, at Loving Acres Hospice Home.
Born Jan. 17, 1917, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Fred L. and Erma Miller Rudy.
He retired from McDonald Douglas and Fairchild Aircraft as a parts control supervisor.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He also was a member of the Potomac Fish and Game Club and Sight Chairman of the St. Charles Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Rudy, two daughters, Leslie Boward of Williamsport and Linda Bowers of St. Peters, Mo.; two sisters, Helen Palladino and Mary Bean, both of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services were held Friday at First United Methodist Church of Lutz, Fla.
Arrangements are by Loyless Funeral Home, Land O' Lakes.
John O. Wenger
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - John O. Wenger, 67, of 8790 Nyesville Road, died Friday, March 14, 1997, at his home.
Born Sept. 10, 1929, in Nyesville, Pa., he was the son of the late Eber J. and Grace Hammond Wenger.
He was employed as a dairy farmer.
He was a member of Orrstown United Brethren in Christ Church, Orrstown, Pa.
He also was a member of Franklin County Farm Bureau.
He is survived by his wife whom he married June 23, 1949, Dorsey J. Deihl Wenger; two daughters, Kay Goodhart of Shippensburg, Pa., and Karen Heck of Chambersburg; one son, John "Gene" Wenger of Chambersburg; four sisters, Ruth E. Brown and Emma G. Atherton, both of Orrstown, Pa., Edith "Dolly" Shoop and H. Irene Kenyon, both of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Burkholder and Helen McClure; and two brothers, Orville Wenger and E. Roy Wenger.
Services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., at Orrstown United Brethren in Christ Church.
The Rev. Robert P. Conway and the Rev. Joe Baer will officiate.
Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
Viewing will be held Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, and one hour prior to the services at the church.

Helen C. Goshorn
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Helen C. Goshorn, 82, of 2955 Jefferson Drive, died Thursday, March 13, 1997, at Harrisburg Hospital, Harrisburg, Pa.
Born Dec. 17, 1914, in Mercersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Charles C. and Mary C. Divelbiss Banks.
During World War II, she was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot as a key punch operator in the personnel department.
She later worked for the Franklin County Probation Department.
She later returned to Letterkenny and retired in 1979 after 23 years of service.
She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Chambersburg, where she also was a member of the Mizpah Sunday school class for 46 years.
She was a former member of Stoufferstown Garden Club and a former Stoufferstown Democratic Committee Woman.
She is survived by her husband, whom she married March 14, 1942, Charles W. Goshorn; one daughter, Sally Ann North of Chambersburg; two grandsons, Christopher David North and Ryan Michael North, both of Chambersburg; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Donald L. Banks.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg.
The Rev. Harold E. Posey and the Rev. Allen Lingenfelter III will officiate.
Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
Viewing will be held one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Donald A. Smith Sr.
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Donald Allen Smith Sr., 54, of Hedgesville, died Thursday, March 13, 1997, in City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born June 2, 1942, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Eutah Statton and Sallie Elizabeth Richmond Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia Emmons Smith; five daughters, Mary K. Hernandez, Tina A. Turner and Doris V. VanMetre, all of Hedgesville, Bonnie L. Arana of Reading, Pa., and Darlene E. Soto of Charles Town, W.Va.; three sons, Melvin W. Emmons of Martinsburg, Donald A. Smith Jr. and Mark A. Smith, both of Hedgesville; seven sisters, Edna Evans, Thelma Shade, Gladys Rogers and Wanda Rogers, all of Inwood, Priscilla Unger and Dakota Markley, both of Martinsburg, and Nancy Frye of Ganotown, W.Va.; three brothers, Edgar Smith of Gerrardstown, W.Va., Ernest Smith of Highland, Fla., and John Smith of Hedgesville; 30 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Roger Emmons and Robert Emmons; three sisters, Georgia Donaldson, Texie Kackley and Mary Markley; and four brothers, Lester Smith, James Smith, David Smith and Howard Smith.
Services will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
Pastor Jack Rudy will officiate.
Burial will be in Allensville Cemetery.
