Jackson R. Reed
Jackson R. Reed, 79, of 1107 Fry Ave., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 1996, at the Veterans Affairs Center, Baltimore.
Born Sept. 9, 1917, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Ray R. and Bertha M. Brumbaugh Reed.
He was employed for 30 years by Middlekauff Drug Store and retired from Rite Aid as a pharmacist.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Pacific Theater.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, Hagerstown.
He also was a member of Washington County Historical Society; American Legion post 42, and was a former member of Hagerstown Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Ellen L. Olsson Reed; two daughters, Carolyn L. Crokett of Westover, Md., and Elizabeth E. Koser of McLean, Va.; one son, Ronald O. Reed of Crisfield, Md. and two grandchildren.
Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. C. Edward Blackmon will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.
Beula E. Hurd
MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Beula E. Hurd, 88, of 12035 Two Top Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.
Born March 31, 1908, in Shimpstown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Harry Hawbaker and Harriet Naomi Brubaker Miller.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester F. Hurd, on June 26, 1975.
She attended York Business College, York, Pa.
During World War II she was employed as an assembler of airplane wings at Stattons Furniture Store of Hagerstown. She also worked at the former Trimmer's Store as a clerk and bookkeeper, and at the former Snider's Elevator, both of Mercersburg. She also was a Mercersburg area Avon representative from 1962 to 1970.
She was a lifelong member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mercersburg. She sang in the church choir and was a member of the Missionary Society.
She was a former member of the Women's Temperance Society.
She is survived by one daughter, Harriet E. Gilbert of Cearfoss; one son, Ray C. Hurd of Mercersburg; three stepdaughters, Margaret L. Moats of Williamsport, Viola E. Edwards of Hagerstown, and Blanche E. Culler of Tilmanton, Md.; one stepson, Howard W. Hurd of Hagerstown; four grandchildren; 15 step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; 35 step great-grandchildren and 31 step great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a set of twin brothers.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Michael R. Brendle officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mercersburg.
There will be no viewing, but the family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the church.
The family requests the omission of flowers and suggest memorial donations be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Building Fund, 8 Linden Ave., Mercersburg, Pa. 17236.

William B. Wells
KEEDYSVILLE - William Braker Wells, 93, of 19601 Shepherdstown Pike, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 23, 1903, in Augusta County, Va., he was the son of the late William Walter and Florence A. Bishop Wells.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen R. Wells, and by his second wife, Anna Viola Wells.
He had been employed for many years by Hagerstown Rubber Co. and was a self-employed roofer and cabinetmaker.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a charter member of the Keedysville Ruritan Club and was club president, district governor and was on the National Ruritan board of directors for three years.
He is survived by one sister, Nora L. Garmong of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and his caretakers, Connie and Howard Souders of Keedysville.
Graveside services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown. The Rev. Donald Evanson will officiate.
The family will receive friends at Bast Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro, on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lillian C. Lutman
WILLIAMSPORT - Lillian Catherine Lutman, 90, of 16141 Cloverton Lane, Williamsport, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1905, in Conneysville, Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Annie Polk Weatherholtz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter H. Lutman.
She previously was employed by Troy Laundry.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Florida.
She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews; and a friend with whom she lived, Estelle M. Morgan.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
There will be no viewing.
R. William Higgins
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - R. William "Bill" Higgins, 77, of 930 B Menno Village, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 1996, at Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg, Pa.
Born Feb. 15, 1919, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Ralph D. Higgins and Ada Jewel McNair Higgins Garnes.
He was a 1937 graduate of Chambersburg High School and a 1942 graduate of Shippensburg University.
He was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, as a position management specialist and civilian training director. After retiring in 1970, he worked for Pennsylvania State University for 14 years as an instructor in their evening management program.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II as flight instructor in twin engine seaplanes at Pensacola, Fla.
He wrote and published a book, "This Is The Place That Was," his memories of growing up in Chambersburg.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Chambersburg. He was a member of the Sanctuary Choir for more than 30 years, and served on the church council and taught Sunday school.
He was a member and past president of the Franklin Fire Co.; VFW; American Legion; President's Club of Shippensburg University; The American Association of Retired Persons; and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Adda Pensinger Higgins of Menno Village; one son, William M. Higgins of West Chester, Pa.; four half sisters, Vivian Shetter, Marian Campbell and Doris Sollenberger, all of Chambersburg, and Joan Harvey of Doylesburg, Pa.; and one half brother, Robert E. Garnes.
Services will be held today at 11 a.m. at the chapel of the First Lutheran Church. The Rev. Karen Minnich-Sadler will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

Richard D. Allamong
PARSONBURG, Md. - Richard Darren Allamong, 31, of 7473 Madeline Circle, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 1996, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Md.
Born March 10, 1965, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Richard Curwood Allamong of Greencastle, Pa., and Helen Jean Wilhelm Bond of Parsonburg.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by six sisters, Dawn Hayzlett of Greencastle, Content Brooks of Pasadena, Calif., Debbie Stottlemyer of Boonsboro, Shawn Wright of Waynesboro, Pa., Shannon Rideout of State Line, Pa., and Diane Treich of Hagerstown; and three brothers, Glenn A. Bond Sr. of Hagerstown, Robert J. Bond of Parsonburg and Richard Allamong of Smithsburg.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Richard A. Kroll will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.
There will be no viewing.

Mary E. Decker
MARION, Pa. - Mary E. Decker, 83, of 5413 3rd St., died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 1996, in Manor Care Health Center.
Born Aug. 15, 1913, in Greencastle, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William T. and Sarah Miller Holstay.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter K. Decker, on Jan. 5, 1973.
She was a member of Heidelberg United Church of Christ, Marion, and the Golden Link Sunday School Class.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley D. Bender of Chambersburg, Pa.; one son, Kenneth A. Decker of Chambersburg; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.

Marvin D. Kesecker
LARGENT, W.Va. - Marvin Dow Kesecker, 79, of Largent, died Monday, Nov. 11, 1996, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born March 21, 1917, in Sleepy Creek, W.Va., he was the son of the late Rev. Earl R. and Martha Householder Kesecker.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Estawanna Hinds Kesecker, in March, 1993.
He was employed by Glenn L. Martin, Baltimore, during the early 1940s. He also was a farmer, a self-employed real estate developer, and was employed by Fairchild Aircraft, Hagerstown, until his retirement.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II in the South Pacific as a carpenter's mate 3rd class. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon.
He was a member of Enon Primitive Baptist Church, Largent, where he served for more than four decades.
He also was a member of the Deford Lodge 88 A.F.&A.M., 32nd Degree Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; Junior Order of United American Mechanics Council 117, Berkeley Springs; Webster B. Harrison American Legion Post 26, Hancock; Disabled American Veterans, Morgan County Chapter 34; Risinger-Stotler Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 4019, Berkeley Springs; Lions Club, Paw Paw, W.Va.; and United American Workers Union, Local 842, Hagerstown.
He is survived by his daughter, Leona Kesecker McLanahan of Largent; three sisters, Ruth Cable of Seaford, Del., Anna Lea Oulie of Norfolk, Va., and Eileen Shipley of Baltimore; one brother, Earl R. Kesecker Jr. of Berkeley Springs; and 18 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Lillian Kesecker, Clara Meier, Madeline Ambrose and Fern Backer.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. Burial will follow at the Enon Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Largent. Masonic graveside rites will be performed by Deford Lodge 88 A.F.&A.M. ,and full military graveside honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard.
Master masons will assemble at the lodge hall at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
