Emma C. Shewbridge
RANSON, W.Va. - Emma Camille Shewbridge, 80, of Ranson and formerly of Garretts Mill, Md., died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson.
Born Nov. 15, 1916, in Weverton, Md., she was the daughter of the late Albert Newton and Florence Virginia Kelbaugh Deaner.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Elmer Shewbridge, on July 18, 1987.
She retired as a clerical worker from GEICO Insurance Co., Bethesda, Md.
She was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Gapland, Md.
She is survived by three daughters, Joyce A. Bradley of Ranson, Joan K. Shewbridge of Hagerstown and Jean K. Deener of Knoxville, Md.; five sons, James A. Shewbridge of Brunswick, Md., Jerry A. Shewbridge of Ranson, David S. Shewbridge of Kernersville, N.C., Carroll Lamont Shewbridge of Charles Town, W.Va., and Marshall Brent Shewbridge of Andros Island, Bahamas; one sister, Kathleen Hawes of Knoxville; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by eight sisters and three brothers.
Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Gapland. The Rev. Wendell McClellan will officiate. Burial will be in St. Luke's Episcopal Church Cemetery, Brownsville.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

Paul Garrett
CHESTNUT HILL, W.Va. - Paul "Doc" Garrett, 77, of Chestnut Hill, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at Shenandoah Nursing Home, Ranson, W.Va.
Born May 2, 1919, in Chestnut Hill, he was the son of the late Clyde and Georgia Virginia Hawk Garrett.
He retired as a truck driver from the Virginia Department of Highways, Hillsboro, Va.
He attended Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 948, Charles Town, W.Va.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marjorie Pomeroy Garrett; five daughters, Naomi Costello of Summit Point, W.Va., Reba Presgraves of Berryville, Va., Aretta Cook of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Barbara Painter of Charles Town and Janet Stouts of Brunswick, Md.; three sons, Dale Woodward of Paeonian Springs, Va., Henry Woodward of Inwood, W.Va., and Calvin Woodward of Chester, Va.; one sister, Rosetta Talton of Harpers Ferry; one brother, Melvin Piper of Harpers Ferry; 32 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Leake; one son, Amos Woodward III; one sister, Myrtle Wilt; and one brother, Charles Garrett.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church, Chestnut Hill. The Rev. Henry L. Fisher and the Rev. James Boyce will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg, W.Va.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry.

Lanna C. Carbaugh
THURMONT, Md. - Lanna Clifton "Cliff" Carbaugh, 88, of Thurmont, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at Frederick Health Care Center, Frederick, Md.
Born May 30, 1908, in Thurmont, he was the son of the late Nicholas June and Millie Emma Fogle Carbaugh.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances W. Carbaugh, on June 3, 1970.
He owned and operated a bicycle and small motor repair shop prior to his retirement.
He was a former member of the Episcopal Church.
He was a fisherman.
He is survived by one brother, Seymour H. Carbaugh of Martinsburg, W.Va.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Johano C. Fisher, Julia C. Fisher and Ethel C. Devilbiss; and four brothers, Oscar M. Smith, Joseph Carbaugh, Bradley Carbaugh and Wally Carbaugh.
Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at Robert E. Daily & Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main St., Thurmont. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Cemetery, Thurmont.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

John K. Smeltzer Jr.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - John K. "Skeeter" Smeltzer Jr., 39, of Martinsburg, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at his home.
Born May 27, 1957, in Martinsburg, he was the son of John K. and Phyllis James Smeltzer Sr. of Martinsburg.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his grandmother, Hilda K. Brown, of Martinsburg; and aunts and uncles.
Services and burial are private.

Bernadette S. Keckler
Bernadette Susan Keckler, 97, of 1183 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.
Born Aug. 7, 1899, in Gettysburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John S. and Alice McCleaf Bowling.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John E. Keckler, in 1974.
She retired from the Porter Chemical Co. She also had been employed by Maryland Fabricating and Hagerstown Rubber Co.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and St. Mary's Sodality.
She is survived by one daughter, Dorene M. Kershner of Hagerstown; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Anne G. Everhart; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. George A. Limmer will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Edna G. Turner
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Edna G. Turner, 80, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at Care Haven of Berkeley Nursing Home.
Born March 21, 1917, in Stanley, Va., she was the daughter of the late William P. and Lizzie Lucas Hilliard.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Abraham G. Turner.
She retired from Corning Glass Works.
She was a member of the Berean Assembly of God Church, Shepherdstown, W.Va.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen Shade of Fredericksburg, Va., and Wanda J. Dodson of Inwood, W.Va.; three sons, Millard F. Turner of Shepherdstown, and Gary W. Turner and Ronald E. Turner, both of Martinsburg; two sisters, Lillian Billmyer of Fredericksburg and Dorothy May of Shepherdstown; one brother, Louis W. Hilliard of Martinsburg; 14 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Charles E. Turner and Ralph G. Turner; two sisters, Eva Hockman and Aileese Mongan; and six brothers, Oliver Hilliard, Leo Hilliard, Lloyd Hilliard, George Hilliard, William Hilliard and Herman Hilliard.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. Raymond E. Jones will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

James W. Faulkwell
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - James W. "Wes" Faulkwell, 81, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, March 26, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born Sept. 24, 1915, in Hedgesville, W.Va., he was the son of the late Wesley W. and Bertha Beard Faulkwell.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Theresa Miller Faulkwell.
He retired from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II.
He is survived by two daughters, Elsie Elizabeth Sanders and Helen "Pat" Files, both of Martinsburg; one son, James W. Faulkwell II of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; one sister, Ann Blair of Dundalk, Md.; one brother, George Faulkwell of Martinsburg; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Theresa Files; four sisters, Mabel Richards, Helen Stokes, Edna O'Roke and Nellie Dorsey; and three brothers, Roy Faulkwell, Harry Faulkwell and Charles Faulkwell.
Services will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. Burial, with military graveside services by Newton D. Baker Post 896 VFW and Berkeley Post 14, American Legion, will be in Hedgesville Cemetery.

Helen E. Lewis
SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Helen E. Lewis, 84, of Friends House, 684 Benicia Drive, died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at her home.
Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Frederick Christian and Elvira Miller Wright.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Lewis, in 1993.
She was a 1931 graduate of Westtown School, Westtown, Pa. She was a 1935 graduate of Hood College, Frederick, Md.
She was active in First Methodist Church, Somerville, N.J., before moving to the Friends House in Santa Rosa.
She is survived by two sons, Douglas E. Lewis of Minneapolis and Charles Stanley Lewis of Washington, D.C.; one brother, Douglas S. Wright of Hagerstown and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Jean E. Flattery; and one brother, Frederick C. Wright Jr.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 12, 1997, at the Friends House. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
