Harold P.G.H. Thomas
ANNANDALE, Va. - Harold P.G.H. Thomas, 79, of Annandale, died Feb. 25, 1997, at Fairfax Hospital, Fairfax, Va.
He was born in Logan, W.Va. He lived his early life in Hagerstown.
He attended Hagerstown High School. He was a graduate of the University of Maryland. He received his master's degree in history and economics from American University, Washington, D.C.
He was employed by Potomac Edison. He authored books in Japanese for Japanese businessmen on the teaching of English and American business language and customs. He was a professor of economics at Northern Virginia Community College for five years. He served on the faculty at Montgomery College since 1978.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force on Jan. 3, 1942. He served in Japan from 1948 to 1951 and again from 1958 to 1961. He commanded the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, from 1961 to 1966.
He was assigned as deputy chief of staff of Air Force Logistics Command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio, from 1966 to 1969. He retired from the Air Force in 1972 after serving as commandant of Inter-American Air Force Academy in Panama. His decorations included three Legions of Merit. He retired from the military as a colonel, and settled in the Washington, D.C., area.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel Thomas; two daughters, Tonya Finton of Silver Spring, Md., and Olivia Schirrmeister of Houston; one brother, Clifford Thomas of Hagerstown; and five grandchildren.
Robert A. Zimmerman
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Robert Andrew "Raz" Zimmerman, 71, of 500 Clayton Ave., died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at the home of his daughter, Barbara Bowersox.
Born Dec. 5, 1925, in Fredericksburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Warren E. and Lottie Werner Zimmerman.
He was a 1942 graduate of Fredericksburg High School. He received his bachelor of science degree in music education from Lebanon Valley College, Annville, Pa., in 1948. He received his master's degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1950.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served as an ensign in the Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1946.
He was employed by the Port Royal School District from January to June, 1948. He was then employed as a music director by the Highspire School District from 1948 to 1950. He began a 32-year teaching career at Waynesboro Area School District in 1950. He served as head of the music department for 32 years and was band director from 1950 to 1975. He was an elementary vocal music teacher until his retirement in 1982.
He was a member of Waynesboro Presbyterian Church, where he served as choir director for 35 years. He had been choir director emeritus since 1985. He held various positions in the church such as elder, clerk of session, Sunday school superintendent and Sunday school teacher. He also had been the choir director of the Olivet Presbyterian Church, Harrisburg, Pa., from 1946 to 1950.
He was a member of the PA Music Educators Association, where he served as president from 1970 to 1972. He was past president of the Southern District of PEMA and served as the president of the Eastern Division of the Music Educators National Conference from 1976 to 1978. He was on the board of directors of the Waynesboro Area Community Concert Association from 1951 to 1991. He was a member of Phi Beta Mu (National School Bandmaster Fraternity); a life member of Franklin County Chapter of Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees; a member of Acacia Lodge 586 F&AM; Ancient Scottish Rite; and National AARP. He was a former member of the Rotary Club where he was song leader; Zembo Temple AAONMS; and the Waynesboro Tennis Association.
He served as guest conductor for county and district band festivals and on the Bicentinennial Board for J.C. Penny Co. in 1975.
In 1977, he received the Lebanon Valley College Alumni Citation for distinguished service in music.
In addition to his daughter, he is survived by his wife, whom he married June 12, 1948, Sarah Koury Zimmerman; one son, Dr. Robert R. Zimmerman of Waynesboro; three sisters, Thelma Shearer of Robertsdale, Pa., Mary Jane Sattazahn of Denver, Pa., and Patricia Zimmerman of Slippery Rock, Pa.; three brothers, James Zimmerman of Fredericksburg, Pa., Edward Zimmerman of New York City and Frederick Zimmerman of Lebanon, Pa.; and eight grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. A memorial service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. The Rev. Charles Jessen will officiate.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Mary E. Lucas
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mary Elizabeth Lucas, 43, of Menno Haven Inc. and formerly of 1855 Scotland Ave., Chambersburg, died Friday, March 28, 1997, at Menno Haven.
Born Aug. 13, 1953, in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of Esther Kaufman Lucas of Chambersburg and the late Paul Lucas.
She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Chambersburg. She also was a member of the Semper Fidelis Sunday School Class.
She enjoyed music, taking walks and needlepoint.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by three brothers, Charles T. Lucas, Theodore A. Lucas and Jeffrey L. Lucas, all of Chambersburg; two nieces; and three nephews.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Linda J. Jaymes, the Rev. C. Frederic Sanford and Chaplain Samuel J. Troyer will officiate.
Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.
Viewing will be held Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Audrey M. Staats
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Audrey Mae Staats, 82, of Martinsburg, died Friday, March 28, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.
Born Nov. 4, 1914, in Martinsburg, she was the daughter of the late Alvin and Mary Grove Staubs.
She was a member of Newton D. Baker Post 896; VFW Ladies Auxiliary; Eagles Club Post 4179, Ladies Auxiliary; and Chapter 738, Women of the Moose.
She is survived by her husband, Oswald V. Staats; three daughters, June L. Bargerstock of Ottawa, Ill., Audrea F. Dew of Springfield, Va., and Karen P. Staats of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; two sons, Oswald V. Staats Jr. of Alexandria, Va., and David W. Staats of Manassas, Va.; one sister, Estelle Brantner of Hagerstown; one brother, Arnold Staubs of Hagerstown; 19 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Doris A. Staats; three sisters; and three brothers.
Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Clarence W. Suman Jr.
NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. - Clarence Witmer Suman Jr., 73, of New Port Richey, died Tuesday, March 25, 1997, in New Port Richey.
Born Nov. 29, 1923, in Beaver Creek, he was the son of the late Clarence W. and Agnes Virginia Taylor Suman Sr.
He was employed by R.D. McKee, Hagerstown, and Hechingers, Takoma Park, Md., before moving to New Port Richey. In New Port Richey, he owned and operated an overhead garage door business.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Suman; one daughter, Mary Ann Suman; two sons, Leon Suman and Wayne Suman, both of Arizona; one sister, Madalyn Andrews of Williamsport; one brother, William Suman of Williamsport; one granddaughter; two nieces; one nephew; and cousins.
A private service was held March 27, at Faupel Funeral Home, Port Richey, Fla. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., at the convenience of the family.
Vincent Tantillo
Vincent Tantillo, 65, of 1023 Valleybrook Drive, Hagerstown, died Friday, March 28, 1997, at his home.
Born July 7, 1931, in New York City, he was the son of Violet Tantillo Frisenda of Williamsport.
He worked as coordinator of technical support services for the Washington County Board of Education, retiring in 1995 after 27 years of service.
He was a U.S. Army veteran who served from 1948 to 1968. He retired from the Signal Corps.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Hagerstown, where he served on the church council and several committees.
He was the first vice president of the Hagerstown Lions Club. He served on the Board of Zoning Appeals and with the Washington County Teachers Federal Credit Union.
He was a member of the Hagerstown-Wesel Sister City Affiliation and the Board of Directors of the Hagerstown YMCA. He was an amateur radio operator and an avid runner.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Linda Lynker Tantillo; two sons, Robert V. Tantillo of Hagerstown and Thomas P. Tantillo of Brisbane, Calif.; two granddaughters; and one aunt.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. David M. Buchenroth will be celebrant. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Bertie S. Yost
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Bertie S. Yost, 94, of Berkeley Springs, died Friday, March 28, 1997, at her home.
Born Feb. 29, 1903, in Goshen, Va., she was the daughter of the late William and Caroline S. Hinckle Zembrue.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter E. Yost, in 1956.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Pentecostal faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Alice Pauline Shackelford of Berkeley Springs; six sons, Edward C. Yost of Whitacare, Va., Charles R. Yost, Marvin R. Yost, Earl E. Yost and Leroy Yost, all of Berkeley Springs, and George R. Yost of Cleveland; 32 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Harry E. Yost; and three sisters, Mary Hinckle, Merlie Walton and Annie Smith.
Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Andrew Collins and the Rev. Lenard Messick will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Tabor, Berkeley Springs.
Viewing will beheld Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph W. Ankerbrand
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Joseph W. "Woody" Ankerbrand, 54, of 13572 Grant Shook Road, died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.
Born March 29, 1942, in Quincy Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Robert H. and Caroline Cordell Ankerbrand.
As a young man, he was employed by Bud Brown Orchards. He had also worked for Frank Shaffer Products, Greencastle, and Waynesboro Pipe Products. He was employed as a machinist by D.L. George and Sons, Waynesboro, Pa.
He was a member of Welsh Run Brethren Church.
He also was a member of the National AARP. He was a past member of Greencastle Quarterback Club, serving as president for eight years; past member and treasurer of the Nova Ruritan Club; and a charter member of the Greencastle Midget Football League.
He is survived by is wife, Faye E. Hearm Ankerbrand, whom he married Jan. 9, 1965; one daughter, Caroline R. Martin, of Greencastle; two sons, Robert W. Ankerbrand of Mercersburg, Pa., and David A. Ankerbrand of Greencastle; two sisters, Thelma I. Kell of Waynesboro and Bonnie L. Mumma of Hagerstown; one brother, Donald E. Ankerbrand of Waynesboro; two granddaughters; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant son.
Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Welsh Run Church of the Brethren, 11420 Welsh Run Road, Mercersburg. The Rev. C. Henry Hunsberger and the Rev. Floyd E. Myers will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
