Lewis Q. Briggs
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Lewis Q. Briggs, 81, of Manor Care, and formerly of 37 Carl Ave., Greencastle, Pa., died Thursday, March 27, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born Nov. 7, 1915, in Isle of Wight County, Va., he was the son of the late Robert H. and Saddie Todd Briggs Sr. He had lived in Windsor, Va. He was raised on a farm during the Depression.
In his early life, he was as a busboy at the Belvedere Hotel in Baltimore. He then worked at the Chamberlain Hotel at Old Point Comfort, Va., where he was in charge of the food stand by the swimming pool. He then moved to the Surf Club, Virginia Beach, Va., doing the same type of work. During the winter months, he worked at the John Marshall Hotel, Richmond, Va., where he was promoted to full-time waiter. He became a waiter at the Alexander, Hagerstown. Prior to retiring in 1995, he was the Maitre d' of the Fountain Head Country Club, Hagerstown.
While living in Windsor, he was a member of the Chapel Grove United Church of Christ. He attended Bethel A.M.E. Church, Greencastle.
He also was a member of the South Chapter 2977 AARP, Waynesboro, Pa.; national AARP; and an honorary member of the Fountain Head Country Club.
He is survived by his wife whom he married on Aug. 1, 1945, C. Elenora Caution Briggs; one sister, Gracie Eley of Portsmouth, Va.; one brother, Robert H. Briggs; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Rosanna Lewis, in 1995.
Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Minnich-Miller-May Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle. The Rev. John W. Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Treiva L. Stoler
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Treiva L. Stoler, 84, of Manor Care Nursing Home, and formerly of Trinity House and 16 E. Second St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Saturday, March 29, 1997, at Manor Care Nursing Home.
Born Feb. 20, 1913, in Preble City, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John Elmer and Bessie Mae Hartzler Petry.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Stoler, in 1982.
She was employed by Freeman Shoe Co. and Sylvania and Freeman Co. in various occupations. She retired in 1975 after 27 years of service.
She was a member of Fairview Avenue Brethren in Christ Church, Waynesboro.
She was a member of National AARP and South Chapter of AARP at Otterbein United Brethren in Christ.
She is survived by two daughters, Mae P. Carbaugh of Waynesboro and Genevieve Roland of Greencastle, Pa.; one son, Samuel E. Stoler of State Line, Pa.; one sister, Pearl Coalter of New Carlisle, Ohio; six grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home Inc., corner of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro. The Rev. Kenneth E. Wenger will officiate. Burial will be in Macedonia United Brethren in Christ Church Cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the services Tuesday.

Lewis C. Strine

Ruth V.L. Hardesty
INWOOD, W.Va. - Ruth Virginia Lucas Hardesty, 64, of Inwood, died Saturday, March 29, 1997, at her home.
Born June 11, 1932, in Alderson, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Ted Charles Lucas and Merle E. Ayers Lucas.
She was employed as a correctional officer by Federal Women's Reformatory in Alderson.
She was a member of Tri State Baptist Church, Charles Town, W.Va.
She is survived by her husband, John Calvin Hardesty; one daughter, Dolly Ruth Graham of Frederick, Md.; one son, K. Wayne Hardesty, at home; one granddaughter; one grandson; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Tri State Baptist Church, U.S. 340 North, Charles Town. Ray Love will officiate. Burial will be Edge Hill Cemetery, Charles Town.
The family will receive friends at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson, W.Va., Monday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Christopher L. Waugh
NORTH POLE, Alaska - Christopher Lee Waugh, 13, of North Pole, and formerly of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died Thursday, March 27, 1997, in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Born April 19, 1983, in Fairbanks, he was the son of Arthur and Joan Waugh of North Pole.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Laura Waugh of North Pole; grandparents, Virginia Hunter Waugh of Berkeley Springs, Charlie and Edna Aulabaugh Griffith of Sun Lakes, Ariz., and Glen Shindle; 26 aunts and uncles; 38 cousins; great-aunts and great-uncles.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Jesse W. Waugh and Leslie E. Aulabaugh.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1 S. Green St., Berkeley Springs. Edwin Floyd and the Rev. Owen Womack will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
Visitation will be at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Elizabeth D. Knode
WILLIAMSPORT - Elizabeth DeHaven Knode, 86, of Homewood Retirement Center, and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Friday, March 28, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born March 26, 1911, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Bennett M. and Daisy D. Bishop DeHaven.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth E. Knode.
She attended Winchester Avenue School. She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School. She graduated with an A.B. degree in elementary education from Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W.Va.
She taught school for 40 years at Pikeside and Winchester Avenue schools in Berkeley County.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Martinsburg, for more than 50 years, where she taught Philathea Sunday School Class for 25 years. She was a member of the choir for 40 years.
She was a member of Golden Rule Chapter 69, O.E.S.; United Daughters of the Confederacy, Shepherdstown Chapter 128; member and past president of Shepherdstown Womans Club; City Hospital Auxiliary; Salvation Army Auxiliary; member and past president of Berkeley County Civic Theater; member and past president of Shenandoah Valley Hobby Club; and West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees. She was a life member of National Education Association and a member of National Retired Teachers.
She served as past president of Berkeley County Education Association and Berkeley County Classroom Teachers Association; and past president of United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Berkeley County and Shepherdstown chapters. She was a past member of Crippled Children and the state Education Commission. She served as past chairman of Patriot Activities of United Daughters of the Confederacy of West Virginia.
She was the last of her immediate family. She is survived by three nieces, Norma Parker of Glendale, Calif., Janice Martin of Knoxville, Tenn., and Phyllis S. Yingling of Baltimore; one nephew, Erwin L. DeHaven of Gaithersburg, Md.; seven great-nieces and great-nephews; great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
She was preceded in death two sisters, Sula DeHaven Reaves and Virginia DeHaven Stuckey; and two brothers, Levi H. DeHaven and Leslie D. DeHaven.
Services will be Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 4 to 7 p.m., where Golden Rule Chapter 69, O.E.S. will have a memorial service at 6:30 p.m.
The family suggests memorial donations be made to Shepherd College Alumni Association or the American Heart Association.
Henry G. Klick Sr.
LAWTON, Okla. - Henry G. Klick Sr., 85, of Lawton, died Friday, March 28, 1997, in Lawton.
He was born Jan. 18, 1912, in Chicago.
He worked at Republic Steel in Chicago, and then moved to Mercer, Wis., where he was a sheriff's deputy. He also drove truck cross-country for Tri-State Homes.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, where he was an usher.
He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Royal Neighbors of America, AFL-CIO Local 1033, United Steelworkers of America, and Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees.
He was the oldest participant in a Jerry Lewis Charity Skate-a-Thon, was the oldest torch bearer in the 1989 Olympic Torch Run through Oklahoma, bowled with two bowling leagues, and delivered Mobile Meals until the age of 83.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Klick; four daughters, Jeanette Krstolich of Chicago, Dr. Anne Williams of Lawton, Margaret Richards of Mercer, and Patricia Otto of Ludington, Mich.; three sons, James Klick of Lockport, Ill., George Klick of Chicago and Henry Klick Jr. of Hagerstown; two sisters, Helen Moise of Chicago and Mildred Lescalleet of Santee, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated today at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, with the Rev. Marvin Levin, as celebrant. Entombment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens Chapel of Peace Mausoleum.

Thelma B. Alting
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Thelma Brown Alting, 66, of Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Pottstown, Pa., died Monday, March 31, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.
Born March 5, 1931, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late James and Priscilla Freeman Brown.
She was a 1949 graduate of Bok Vocational High School in Philadelphia. She attended Temple University in Philadelphia, where she majored in home economics.
During the 1960s and 1970s, she worked as a cook at Grows Restaurant in Pottstown, Pa., and as a salad and dessert chef at Brookside Country Club in Pottstown. She was a homemaker in recent years.
She was of the Baha'i faith.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Robert Gene Alting; two daughters, Roberta Alting of Silver Spring, Md., and Priscilla Alting of Pottstown; one son, Jonathan Alting of Boyertown, Pa.; three sisters, Dolores Lyons and Patricia Farlow, both of Philadelphia, and Lorraine Farlow of California; two brothers, James Farlow of California and Michael Farlow of Cape May, N.J.; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, James Francis Alting.
Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs, where the family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery in Berkeley Springs.
