Madeline A. Sands
Madeline Alberta Sands, 87, formerly of 1056 Brinker Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996, at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport.
Born April 12, 1909, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late Albert Sands and Ann Brown Sands Ehlers.
She was employed with The Herald-Mail Co., retiring in 1971, after 41 years of service.
She was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, the Martha Circle Sunday school class, and taught Sunday school for many years.
She also was a member of The Herald-Mail 25-Year Club.
She is survived by one stepsister, Judith Kline of Hagerstown; one stepbrother, John F. Ehlers of Annapolis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. John W. Ailstock will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Rachel S. Butler
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Rachel Staubs Butler, 82, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996, at her home.
Born Feb. 29, 1914, in Jefferson County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Edward Gardner and Rosie Wilt Staubs.
Her husband, Robert Glenn Butler, preceded her in death.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for 69 years, Philathea Sunday school class, United Methodist Women, and served on the administrative board.
She also was a member of Golden Rule Chapter 69 Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as past matron, grand Esther and past grand representative; and Chapter 738 Women of the Moose. She was a member of Daughter of the Nile and Lioness Club, N.A.R.F., and Racket Club.
She was an active volunteer for Hospice of the Panhandle, Meals on Wheels, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
She is survived by one daughter, Dorothy Johnson of Martinsburg; one son, Edward Glenn Butler of Silver Spring, Md.; one sister, Jeanette Pitzer of Martinsburg; one brother, Lewis M. Staubs of Martinsburg; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Edna Bolton, Isabell Keiter, Rohda Lack and Elizabeth White; and four brothers, Harry J. Staubs, Charles E. Staubs, Clarence W. Staubs and Douglas Staubs.
Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. G. Edward Grove will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m., where Golden Rule Chapter 69 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m.

Annie M. Petre
WILLIAMSPORT - Annie May Petre, 87, of 16505 Virginia Ave., and formerly of Broadfording Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996, at Homewood Retirement Center in Williamsport.
Born Oct. 21, 1909, in Broadfording, she was the daughter of the late David R. and Lizzie M. Showalter Petre.
She was a member of Maugansville Bible Brethren Church.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, D. Jean Petre of New Windsor, Md., who cared for her.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Irene E. Petre; and one brother, Joel L. Petre.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Maugansville Bible Brethren Church, 17904 Binkley Ave., Maugansville. The Rev. John C. Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in Broadfording Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
Arrangements are being handled by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown.
Clyde W. Higgs
Clyde William Higgs, 72, of Manor Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 1996, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Jan. 14, 1924, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Vernon K. and Rose L. Unger Higgs.
He was employed by Brandt Cabinet Works in Hagerstown for 25 years, and Turner's Taxi for 13 years.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Western Enterprise Fire Co. and Antietam Fire Co., both in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Connie L. Bailey Higgs; three daughters, Donna K. Mundey, Sharon A. Clem and Linda L. Sines, all of Hagerstown; one son, Jeffrey L. Higgs of Hagerstown; one brother, Ralph F. Higgs of Hagerstown; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Hose; and two brothers, Robert Higgs and Lloyd Higgs.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
C. Walter Hock Sr.
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - C. Walter Hock Sr., 81, of 7109 Rice Road, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996, at Menno Haven Nursing Home in Chambersburg, Pa.
Born March 22, 1915, in Culbertson, Pa., he was the son of the late Clark W. and Mary F. Wenger Hock.
He was a retired farmer. After retiring from farming, he worked for Orrstown Bank as a courier for 10 years, retiring in 1994.
He was a member of Mount Rock Brethren in Christ Church and its Servants of Christ Sunday school class.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret M. Myers Hock; five daughters, Isabel Overcash, Julia Bowman and Rosalie Tarman, all of Chambersburg, Janet Ordway of Enterprise, Ala., and Brenda Kaufman of Shippensburg; two sons, the Rev. C. Walter Hock Jr. of Chambersburg, and Mervin D. Hock of Greencastle, Pa.; one sister, Cora Bert of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; one brother, Laban D. Hock of Mechanicsburg; 17 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Thelma Hock and Verna L. Hock; one son, Raymond E. Hock; five sisters; and three brothers.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Mount Rock Brethren in Christ Church. The Rev. Lloyd T. Zimmerman, the Rev. Robert Murr and the Rev. C. Walter Hock Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Air Hill Cemetery in Greene Township, Pa.
A viewing will be held at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., 112 W. King St., Shippensburg, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
Eileen S. Chitambar
Eileen S. Chitambar, 90, of 32 S. Colonial Drive, Hagerstown, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.
Born Oct. 5, 1906, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late John and Charlotte Haines Sturgess.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore P. Chitambar, who died in 1988.
She lived and taught school in several schools in New Delhi, India. She also was involved in handicrafts and social work over a period of 47 years. She returned to New Orleans and taught school at the age of 71.
As a former resident of Potomac Towers, she served as secretary of the Potomac Towers Association, and was a member of the band.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hagerstown.
She is survived by one daughter, Charlene C. Perry of Hagerstown; one son, Sheridan "Ted" Chitambar of Sunrise, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be announced at a later date.
Visitation will be held at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown, Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.
Robert E. Shaffer
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Robert E. Shaffer, 68, of 703 Forest Road, died Friday, Dec. 6, 1996, at Chambersburg, after suffering an apparent stroke on Dec. 3, 1996.
Born March 9, 1928, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Merle E. and Ethel I. Barnhart Shaffer.
He was a 1947 graduate of Chambersburg High School, where he played drums for the Rhythm Kids. After high school graduation, he played drums with his band known as the Bob Shaffer Combo.
He was a contract order representative for Fort Ritchie in Cascade, retiring in 1990 after 29 years of service. Prior to working at Fort Ritchie, he worked for N.E. Diffenderfer Plumbing and Heating in Chambersburg, and after his retirement he worked part-time for Franklin County Transport.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He attended Park Avenue United Methodist Church in Chambersburg.
He was a life member and past exalted ruler of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 600 in Chambersburg; life member of Landis-McCleaf Detachment of Marine Corps League in Chambersburg; life member of Charles M. Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post 1599 in Chambersburg; and a member of Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46 in Chambersburg; Hume, McNeal, Byers AMVETS Post 224 in Chambersburg; Fraternal Order of Moose 842 in Chambersburg; Eagles Club Inc. in Waynesboro: and Goodwill Fire Co. in Chambersburg.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Bowers Shaffer, whom he married Aug. 29, 1970; one daughter, Terri Oyler of Chambersburg; one stepdaughter, Pam Gearhart of Chambersburg; two brothers, Donald S. Shaffer and Richard C. Shaffer, both of Chambersburg; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory L. Shaffer; and an infant sister, Joyce Shaffer.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Frank O. Monroe will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg, with military graveside services conducted by members of Landis McCleaf Detachment of Marine Corps League.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., where members of BPO Elks Lodge 600 will conduct a service at 8 p.m.

Paul W. Jones
FORT LOUDON, Pa. - Paul W. Jones, 65, of 606 Path Valley Road, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 1996, at his home.
Born Sept. 24, 1931, in Richmond Furnace, Pa., he was the son of the late Paul E. and Olive Wood Jones.
He was employed by Frick Co. in Waynesboro, Pa., for seven years. He was employed for 31 years at Letterkenny Army Depot, where he served as supervisor in security for the last several years. He retired in 1986.
In 1962, he and his wife formed a logging business known as Paul and Sonja Jones Logging.
He was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the U.S. Army.
He was a former member of the former Methodist Church of Metal, Pa.
He had been a licensed pilot since 1984.
He is survived by his wife, Sonja Mellott Jones, whom he married July 9, 1954; two sons, Douglas P. Jones of Mercersburg, Pa., and Michael C. Jones of Fort Loudon; two brothers, Benjamin A. Jones of Johnstown, Pa., and William E. Jones of Fort Loudon; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, 47 N. Park Ave., Mercersburg. The Rev. Michael K. Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Stenger Hill Cemetery in Fort Loudon, with military graveside services conducted by Fulton Honor Guard.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
