Ethel M. Hohman
Ethel "Sissie" McCardell Hohman, of 1424 The Terrace, Hagerstown, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at her home.
Born in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Edward and Ora Bess Middlekauff McCardell.
Her husband, Dr. Daniel Leonard Hohman, died in 1993.
She was a 1937 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She attended the University of Maryland and graduated from The Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in February 1943. She was active in the Hopkins Nursing Alumni Association.
In 1946 she founded the first Girl Scout Troop in McConnellsburg, Pa. She continued to be active with Girl Scouts of Washington County for many years, and the Girl Scout Council.
She was a member of Zion Reformed Church, and served as deacon and as a member of the consistory.
She was a member of The American Field Service; P.T.A. of North Hagerstown High School from 1966 to 1977, where she served as president; Town and Country Garden Club, where she served as past president; and The Bridge Club.
She was historian of District 5 of the Maryland Foundation; a volunteer at Washington County Hospital; and was a member of the Women's Club and Fountain Head Country Club.
She is survived by four daughters, Catherine Hohman Johnston of Wilmington, N.C., Susan Hohman Clutz of Hagerstown, Patricia Adair Hohman of Atlanta, Ga., and Rebecca Mae Hohman of Ridgewood, N.J.; one brother, Thomas McCardell of Silver Spring, Md., and seven grandchildren.
Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Zion Reformed Church, 201 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack Dale Cook will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in McConnellsburg, Tuesday at 10 a.m.
The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Monday from 7 to 9 p.m., and also will greet friends after the service at the church on Tuesday.

John G. Kriner
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - John G. Kriner, 85, of 34 W. Main St., died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.
Born Dec. 12, 1911, in Greencastle, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles D. and Rhoda M. Wallech Kriner.
He retired in 1974 after 22 years of services from Waynesboro School District, where he worked as a maintenance man. Prior, he had been employed as a carpenter, building many homes in the area.
He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Waynesboro.
He was a member of Eagles Club Inc.
He is survived by one daughter, Rosanne M. Pulaski of Waynesboro; one son, Terry L. Kriner of Mont Alto, Pa.; one sister, Ellen B. Stine of Greencastle, Pa.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity United Church of Christ, 30 W. North St., Waynesboro. The Rev. James Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg, Pa.
The family will receive friends at Snyder-Lochstampfor Funeral Home, corner of South Church and West Second streets, Waynesboro, Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. and at the church Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
Everard A. Phillips
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Everard A. Phillips, 59, of 3842 Scotland Ave., died Thursday, April 10, 1997, at University Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, Derry Township, Pa.
Born March 15, 1938, in St. Mary, Jamaica, West Indies, he was the son of the late Aldaphos and Claris Seymore Phillips.
He was employed as a counselor assistant by Alternative Rehabilitation Communities, Chambersburg.
He attended King's Apostle Holiness Church of God, Cove Gap, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Mae Phillips of Orlando, Fla.; three daughters, Barbara Phillips of Miami, Celine Barkley of Mt. Vernon, N.Y., and Charmaine Phillips of Kingston, Jamaica; five sons, Clifton Phillips of Winchester, Va., Everall Phillips of Lewisburg, W.Va., Everard Phillips Jr. of Orlando, Clayton Phillips and Loxley Phillips, both of Kingston; one sister, Vera McNeil of London, England; one brother, Leonard Davidson of Roanoke, Va.; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
Services will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Patricia Tillman will officiate. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery, Chambersburg.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Janet M. Cuddy
Janet Marie Cuddy, 77, of 300 Northern Ave., Hagerstown, died Friday, April 11, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 14, 1919, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ralph D. and Louise E. Yeager Ridgley.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Cuddy.
She was employed by Robert Hall Clothes.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
She was a member of Hits and Misses Bowling League at Long Meadow Bowl.
She is survived by three daughters, Emma Myers and Donna Kesecker, both of Hagerstown, and Reba King of Winchester, Va.; one sister, Dorothy Palmer of Hanover, Pa.; one brother, Joseph Ridgley of Hagerstown; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Dorothy Ruth.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Eddie Blackmon will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

Pearl H. Batcheler
WILLIAMSPORT - Pearl Hughes Batcheler, 74, of 16505 Virginia Ave., died Friday, April 11, 1997, at Homewood Retirement Center.
Born Nov. 1, 1922, in Baltimore, she was the daughter of the late George Lewis and Lola Pearl Hughes Pruett.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Batcheler.
She was a 1966 graduate of Old Dominion University.
She spent most of her life in Virginia Beach, Va. She taught elementary school in the Virginia Beach public school system.
She was an active member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Williamsport. She was a former active member of First Presbyterian Church, Virginia Beach.
She was a volunteer at Virginia Beach Hospital Auxiliary. She also was active with Homewood Auxiliary.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda B. Clark of Hagerstown; two sons, James L. Batcheler of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Robert P. Batcheler of Oxford, Mich.; one sister, Mary Virginia Geiger of Baltimore; one brother, G. Lewis Pruett of Baltimore; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorial services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Homewood Retirement Center Chapel, 16505 Virginia Ave., Williamsport. The Rev. Mark A. Sandell and the Rev. Willard F. Rahn will officiate.
There will be no viewing; however, the family will receive friends at Homewood Community Center on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Bertha M.M. Freyman
SEVERNA PARK, Md. - Bertha Maye Maun Freyman, 85, of Severna Park, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at North Arundle Hospital, Glen Burnie, Md.
Born Dec. 2, 1911, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John A.S. and Bertha M. Rider Maun. She lived her early life in Waynesboro.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred C. Freyman Sr.
She assisted her husband in establishing the Arundle machine shop.
She is survived by one daughter, Bertha E. Chowanetz of Severna Park; one stepson, Alfred C. Freyman Jr. of Severna Park; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary C. Fiore; and one brother, Charles S. Maun.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Charles B. Jessen will officiate. Burial will be Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday one hour prior to the services.
Harriet T. Kennedy
Harriet T. Kennedy, 84, of 308 N. Locust St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, April 13, 1997, at 5236 Orphanage Road, Waynesboro, Pa., the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Kennedy.
Born Feb. 13, 1913, in Worleytown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late William Emmert and Iva Myrtle Stickell Nisewonder.
She was a homemaker. In her early life, she had been employed by the former Greencastle Canning Factory, Greencastle Hosiery Mill and McLaughlin Hotel of Greencastle, Pa.
She had attended Macedonia United Brethren Church, near Greencastle.
She and her husband had served several years as foster parents for numerous children.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Lester F. Kennedy; one daughter, Lois R. Kayhoe of Waynesboro; five sons, Richard E. Kennedy of Waynesboro, Ronald L. Kennedy of Conshohocken, Pa., Allen G. Kennedy and Thurman F. Kennedy, both of Hagerstown, and Bradford W. Kennedy of Modesto, Calif.; 29 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman, Pa.

Earl J. Keefer
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Earl J. Keefer, 66, of 100 Walnut Bottom Road, died Saturday, April 12, 1997, at his home.
Born April 2, 1931, in Sylvan, Pa., he was the son of the late William R. and Mary E. Mills Keefer.
He was employed as a laborer by Waynesboro Construction Co. in Waynesboro, Pa., and was retired. He was formerly employed by Williamsport Tannery in Williamsport.
He was a veteran of the Korean War and served with the U.S. Army.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by his wife, Natalie D. Keefer Keefer, whom he married on Sept. 30, 1934; four daughters, Karen Stine, Lisa Keefer and Kimberly Ann Keefer, all of Hagerstown, and Glenna Pryor of Funkstown; three sons, Earl R. Keefer of Quincy, Pa., Michael L. Keefer and Mark E. Keefer, both of Hagerstown; two stepdaughters, Debra Weaver of Newburg, Pa., and Donna Cover of Shippensburg; three stepsons, Gary Bard of Chambersburg, Pa., Richard Bard of Shippensburg, and Roger Bard of Fayetteville, Pa.; four sisters, Ruby Weaver of Warfordsburg, Pa., Bessie Shillings of Hagerstown, Violet Harris of Hancock, and Mary Dickens of Clearville, Pa.; two brothers, John Keefer of Mercersburg, Pa., and Merle Keefer of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; nine step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring, Chambersburg. Pastor James Dodge will officiate. Burial will be in Air Hill Cemetery, Chambersburg. Military graveside services will be conducted by Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Wednesday one hour prior to the service.
