Thomas H. King Jr.
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Thomas H. "Tom" King Jr., 75, of 9213 Oyler Drive, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at Quincy United Methodist Home.
Born Sept. 28, 1921, in Waynesboro, he was the son of the late Thomas H. and Victoria Beaver King Sr.
He attended Waynesboro schools and Mercersburg Academy. He graduated from Worcester Academy, Massachusetts.
He was employed as an assistant domestic sales manager by Landis Machine Co., Waynesboro.
He was of the Episcopal faith.
He was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 731, Waynesboro; Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1191, Waynesboro; Eagle's Club Inc., Waynesboro; Waynesboro Country Club; and a special member of the Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, Waynesboro.
He was an avid golfer and was a 21-time champion of the Waynesboro Country Club.
He is survived by his wife whom he married Nov. 30, 1945, Valerie M. Moore King; one daughter, Valerie K. Toms of Waynesboro; one sister, Victoria K. Hopwood of Hagerstown; one brother, John F. King of Baltimore; and two granddaughters.
Private services will be held Monday at the convenience of the family in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. Chaplain C. Albert Guyer will officiate.
There will be no viewing, however, the family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 452 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
Martha E. Catlett
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Martha E. Catlett, 72, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at her home.
Born Feb. 20, 1925, in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Cecelea O'Boyel Norton.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Catholic faith.
She was a member of the Humane Society.
She is survived by her husband of 38 years, Vernon B. Catlett; one daughter, Francine Abney of Bradenton, Fla.; two grandchildren, Francine Elizabeth Kiefer of New Bern, N.C., and Daniel Shawn Weir of Bradenton; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Norton Jr.
Services and entombment will be private.
There will be no visitation.

Phyllis I. Thompson
Phyllis I. Thompson, 61, of West Baltimore Street, Hagerstown, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born in Hagerstown, Dec. 20, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Charles H. Shantz and Ethel L. Grove Shantz Spidle.
She was employed at Charles Town Races for five years.
She was a member of the ladies auxiliary to the Moose.
She is survived by her husband, Emmett K. Thompson; one daughter, Marilyn L. Jacobs of Greencastle, Pa.; two sons, Richard Thompson of Hagerstown and Shawn Thompson of Winchester, Va.; two sisters, Dorlene Keefer of Kentucky, and Beverly Long of Hagerstown; one brother, Charles Thomas Shantz of Boonsboro; two grandsons; and two granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 6 p.m. at Davis Funeral Home in Smithsburg. The Rev. Bill Bice will officiate.
There will be no viewing.
Cameron R. O'Connell
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Cameron Reed O'Connell, infant son of Timothy F. and Janet Wall O'Connell, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.
He was born April 8, 1997.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one sister, Jillian Daisy O'Connell, at home; one brother, Garrett Sean O'Connell, at home; maternal grandparents, Roger and Jewel "Sue" Wall of Martinsburg; paternal grandparents, Louis and Geneva O'Connell of Martinsburg; great-grandmothers, Anna Barron of Martinsburg and Antonia O'Connell of Stephenson, Va.; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg. The Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Joseph E. Hess
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Joseph E. "Joe" Hess, 67, of 7836 Anthony Highway, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.
Born Dec. 6, 1929, in Five Forks, Pa., he was the son of Mildred Bonebrake Hess of Waynesboro and the late John Hess Sr.
He was employed by Waynesboro Knitting Mill. He also had worked for Western Maryland Railroad, Chessie System and CSX Railway, first as a trackman and track foreman. He retired on Jan. 1, 1990, after 43 years of service.
He was a member of Solomon Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grindstone Hill.
He was a life member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Union, Baltimore.
He enjoyed working in his garden and yard.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife whom he married on Aug. 14, 1948, Mary Jane Nicarry Hess; one daughter, Saundra K. Swartz of Fayetteville, Pa.; three sons, Terry L. Hess of Orrstown, Pa., Michael L. Hess of Mont Alto, Pa., and Randal L. Hess of Greencastle, Pa.; three sisters, Margaret Valentine of Chambersburg, Pa., Marie Martin of Waynesboro and Pauline Martin of Hagerstown; four brothers, John Hess Jr. of Greencastle, Kenneth R. Hess of Chambersburg, Walter "Doc" Hess and Robert Hess, both of Mont Alto; five grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Whitmore in 1989.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Otterbein United Brethren in Christ Church. The Rev. Wilber L. Sites will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

J. Howard Layman
BOONSBORO - J. Howard Layman, 92, of Fahrney-Keedy Nursing Home, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at the nursing home.
Born Nov. 11, 1904, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles Detrick and Lillian Flook Layman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. McFerren Layman on June 7, 1984. They were married Aug. 23, 1932.
He was a machinist apprentice at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro. He ran the family farm, retiring in 1952. He then worked for the Blue Ridge Fruit Exchange as a salesman and was later a truck driver for Thompson Oil Co., Waynesboro. Prior to his retirement in 1976, he owned and operated Pen Mar Oil Co., Waynesboro, for 16 years.
He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Waynesboro. He also was a member of the Crider Men's Sunday School Class of the church and served on the administrative board and trustees. He visited the shut-ins of the church.
He was a member of Acacia Lodge 586 Free and Accepted Masons, Waynesboro; Harrisburg Consistory; Zembo Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Harrisburg; Waynesboro Shrine Club; George Washington Council 66, Royal and Select Masters; Continental Commandery 66 Knights Templar, both of Chambersburg, Pa.; South Penn Scottish Rite Club; and National AARP. He was a life member of the Waynesboro Fish and Game Association.
He is survived by one daughter, Marilyn L. Tracy of Waynesboro; one sister, Katherine Shank of Quincy, Pa.; two grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Jay A. Saxe will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Masonic memorial services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. by his lodge in the funeral home.

Lenore J. Brugh
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Lenore Josephine Brugh, 65, of 14500 State Route 545, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, April 25, 1997, at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore.
Born Nov. 25, 1931, in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Joseph M. Aubele and Josephine E. Stack.
She was employed as a teacher at St. Mary's Elementary School and St. Maria Goretti High School. She was a choreographer and assistant director for numerous musicals performed at St. Maria Goretti High School.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Hagerstown.
She also was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, Court Holy Family 2245.
She was a sales agent for Metropolitan Life; a representative for Commerce Clearing House Legal Publications; marketing director for Francis Scott Key Mall; regional marketing director for DeBartolo, Inc.; regional director of the Shawnee Girl Scout Council; a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America; director of the Camp Co-He-Lo Girl Scout Day Camp; was involved with the United Way of Washington County; alternate member of the Board of Supervisors of Elections for Washington County; and an American Cancer Society volunteer.
She is survived by her husband, Donald A. Brugh; one daughter, Arlene M. Vuturo of Libertyville, Ill.; five sons, Joseph M. Brugh of Towson, Md., C. Tucker Brugh of Long Beach, Calif., Mark P. Brugh and Daniel R. Brugh, both of Hagerstown, and John W. Brugh of Reisterstown, Md.; one brother, Joseph Aubele of Torrance, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, James C. Brugh.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Virginia Avenue, Hagerstown. The Rev. James P. Proffitt will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be held today and Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., North Hagerstown. A prayer service will be held Sunday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Thelma L.T. Kershner
WILLIAMSPORT - Thelma Lucille Trumpower Kershner, 73, of Milestone Garden Apartments, Williamsport, died Thursday, April 24, 1997, at University of Maryland Hospital, Baltimore.
Born Oct. 15, 1923, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Walter Lloyd and Mary Edith Stonesifer Trumpower.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard E. Kershner Sr. in 1982.
She is survived by four daughters, Geraldine Beard and Vivian Moats, both of Williamsport, Dorothy Gelwicks of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Mary Susan Gelwicks of Hagerstown; two sons, Leonard E. Kershner Jr. and John R. Kershner, both of Williamsport; two sisters, Ouida Idella Stamper and Pearl Jones, both of Williamsport; one brother, Vernon Trumpower of Williamsport; one nephew whom she raised, Ronald E. Kershner of Florida; 16 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and four brothers.
Graveside services will be held Monday at noon at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. Pastor Bobby Robinson will officiate.
There will be no viewing or visitation.
