Odry C. Effland
GREAT CACAPON, W.Va. - Odry Carlton Effland, 73, of Fishers Bridge, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital.
Born in Morgan County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Floyd C. and Cora Edith Dawson Effland.
He was a retired auditor for the state of Maryland accident fund.
A U.S. Navy veteran, he served during World War II.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Great Cacapon.
He also was a member of Dark Hollow Hunting Club.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve V. Shade Effland; three sons, Philip E. Effland of Pittsburgh, and Richard L. Effland and Ralph L. Effland, both of Baltimore; two sisters, Wilma Unger and Mary Unger, both of Hancock; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gerald Effland, Junior Effland and Donald Effland.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church in Great Cacapon.
The Rev. Roger Burtner will officiate.
Burial will be in Greenway Cemetery in Berkeley Springs, with graveside military services conducted by Tri-State Honor Guard.
Friends may call at Hunter Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs, today from 4 to 9 p.m., and at the church one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Omar E. Stine Sr.
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Omar E. Stine Sr., 79, of 9123 Fort McCord Road, and Tioga, Pa., died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at Soldiers and Sailors Hospital, Wellsboro, Pa.
Born May 16, 1917, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Christopher C. and Lula I. Forthyse Stine.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Mae Tritle Stine, in 1975.
He was employed as an automobile mechanic by Chrysler Corp. prior to retirement.
He is survived by one daughter, Rose Marie Miller of Edenville, Pa., and Tioga; three sons, Omar Stine of Chambersburg, John L. Stine of Fayetteville, Pa., and Robert Stine of Mercersburg, Pa.; two brothers, Charles B. Stine and Harry B. Stine, both of Waynesboro, Pa.; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Irene Stine; and four brothers, Howard Stine, Ed Stine, Harold Stine and Earl Stine.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, St. Thomas, Pa.
The Rev. Curtis Bryant will officiate.
Burial will be in Montgomery Brethren In Christ Cemetery, Mercersburg.

Gordon B. Hewlett
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Gordon B. Hewlett, 85, of 165 Colonial Drive, died Sunday, May 11, 1997, at Harrisburg General Hospital.
Born July 6, 1911, in Clearfield County, Pa., he was the son of the late Sampson Newton and Sarah Maude Doherty Hewlett.
His wife, Josephine White Hewlett, died in 1996.
He was manager and operator of Valley Transit Mix, a division of Valley Quarries, where he also was an officer and board director until his retirement in 1989.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, Pa.
He was a shriner with Zembo Temple in Harrisburg; a mason with General James Chambers Lodge 801, where he was a charter and a 50-year member; and a member of Harrisburg Consistory Ancient Accepted Scotish Rite.
He was a member of Kiwanis Club in Chambersburg, on the board of directors of Chambersburg Hospital from 1971 to 1978, and was a volunteer with Chambersburg chapter of Service Corps of Retired Executives since 1989.
He is survived by one daughter, Janice O'Connor of Long Valley, N.J.; one son, James G. Hewlett of Washington, D.C.; one sister, Frances Forsyth of Lansing, Mich.; one brother, John H. Hewlett of Baltimore; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by two sisters.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Robert G. Sellers Funeral Home, 297 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg.
The Rev. Richard B. Cartwright will officiate.
Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.
A viewing will be held at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service on Thursday.

Edith B. Edmond
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Edith B. Edmond, 74, of Martinsburg, died Monday, May 12, 1997, at City Hospital in Martinsburg.
Born Feb. 14, 1923, in Hillsboro, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Rhul K. and Ena Scott Pringle.
She was a homemaker.
She was of the Mormon faith.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Floyd H. Edmond; two daughters, Brenda C. Bartley of Martinsburg, and Sheila Morris of Fredericksburg, Va.; one son, Stephen Edmond of Martinsburg; one stepson, Floyd E. Edmond of Arizona; one sister, Anna Mae Eagle of Texas; one brother, Joe Pringle of Lenore, Texas; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Mollie Eagle; three brothers, Glenn Pringle, George Pringle and Bob Pringle; and one grandson.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel in Martinsburg.
Bishop Mike Lee will officiate.
Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens in Martinsburg.

Dorothy M. Leaman
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Dorothy Mae Ryder Pugh Baker Leaman, 74, of 15270 Cider Press Road, died Saturday, May 10, 1997, at Waynesboro Hospital.
Born Jan. 10, 1923, in New York, she was the daughter of the late Elsie Ryder.
Her first husband, Ralph M. Pugh, died in 1969. They were married in January 1945.
She married her second husband, Herbert Baker, in 1970.
She was a high school graduate and attended New York University for two years.
She was a music teacher for Machen Music in Hagerstown from 1954 to 1960.
She worked at Leaman's Pet and Garden Center in Leitersburg from 1971 to 1993, where she eventually became owner.
She was a breeder of cocker spaniels, German shepherds and Shetland sheep dogs, training and showing them in the local area.
She was of the Episcopalian faith.
She was a member of Antietam Humane Society in Waynesboro, and a former member of Mason-Dixon Kennel Club in Hagerstown.
She is survived by her husband, James H. Leaman, whom she married April 17, 1974; two sons, Bryce Pugh of Greencastle, Pa., and Douglas Pugh of Waynesboro, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; and her former husband, Herbert Baker.
She was preceded in death by one son, Stephen Pugh.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
The Rev. Canon Stanley F. Imboden will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Sunday.
John L. Devore
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - John L. "Sam" Devore, 73, of 2933 Philadelphia Ave., died Tuesday, May 13, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 2, 1924, in Walnut Bottom, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel and Ruth Campbell Devore.
He was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg as Branch Chief of Depot Facilities and Grounds, retiring in 1979.
He served during World War II as a chief petty officer with the 82nd Construction Battalion, Seabees.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Chambersburg.
He also was a member of George Washington Lodge 143 F&AM; Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW; AARP; NARFE; Marine Corps League, and Chambersburg Club, all of Chambersburg; Scottish Rite Club of Harrisburg and Shippensburg, Pa.; Tall Cedars of Lebanon in Shippensburg; and Wesley Yeager Post 606 American Legion, Fort Loudon, Pa.
He is survived by his wife, Dorine Myers Devore, whom he married June 26, 1948; one daughter, Tanya D. Spotts, of Ashburn, Va.; five sisters, Evelyn Kyle of Shippensburg, Edna Hovetter, Aida Hovetter, and Lois Porter, all of Walnut Bottom, and Carolyn Glass of Carlisle, Pa.; one brother, Rodney Devore, of Walnut Bottom; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Devor.
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church.
The Rev. Neal O. Hively will officiate.
Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
