Frederick O. Way, Sr.

WINCHESTER, Va. - Frederick O. Way, Sr., 85, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center.

Born March 6, 1912, in Shepherdstown, W.Va., he was the son of the late Andrew and Ardella Davis Way.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Gray Way.

He retired as a lineman from Potomac Edison Co.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

He is survived by one son, Frederick O. Way, Jr. of Newport News, Va.; three daughters, Margaret M. Way, Doris L. Way, and Shirley A. Matson, all of Martinsburg; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by one brother, David S. Way; and by one sister, Edna Myers.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

The Rev. G. Edward Grove and the Rev. John R. Yost will officiate.

Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Shepherdstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Anna V. F. Miller

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Anna Virginia Freeze Miller, 98, of Penn Hall Nursing Home, Chambersburg, and formerly of 408 W. Sixth St., Waynesboro, Pa., died Thursday, May 15, 1997, at the home.

Born Oct. 21, 1898, in Falling Waters, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Charles H. and Ozella M. Sellers Freeze.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Golden Miller, on Dec. 17, 1974.

They were married on Oct. 15, 1916.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro.

She is survived by one son, Thomas G. Miller, of Waynesboro.

In addition to her husband, she also was preceded in death by one sister, Betty E. Six, on March 31, 1989.

Services will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.

The Rev. Richard A. Seaks will officiate.

Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the services on Monday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Nora M. Wingert

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Nora M. Wingert, 88, of Menno-Haven Nursing Home, Chambersburg, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born Oct. 4, 1908, in Markes, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John and Bessie V. Rotz Shelly.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar R. Wingert, on July 17, 1977.

She was employed as a clerk by McCroy's, Chambersburg, until her retirement in 1942.

She had also been employed by the former Silk Mill, Chambersburg.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Chambersburg.

She is survived by two sisters, Dorothy V. Keefer and Olive C. Souders, both of Chambersburg.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Edna Etter and one brother, Clayton Shelly.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Lincoln Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The Rev. Jeffrey L. Roth will officiate.

There will be no public viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers and suggests memorial donations be made to St. John's United Church of Christ, 1811 Lincoln Way East, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.

John A. Pheil, Sr.

John A. "Abe" Pheil, Sr., 76, of 20208 Jefferson Blvd., Hagerstown, died Thursday, May 15, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 6, 1921, in Mercersburg, Pa., he was the son of Hattie Ensminger Pheil of Boonsboro and the late Frank Pheil.

He was employed by Hardell Fuel Oils, retiring after 30 years of service.

A veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he served during World War II.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg.

He also was a member of AARP.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Pheil; two sons, David Charles Pheil of Hagerstown and John Abram Pheil, Jr. of Greencastle, Pa.; one brother, Francis Z. Pheil of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd., North Hagerstown.

The Rev. Richard G. Hembrock will officiate.

Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; or The John R. Marsh Cancer Center, 11110 Medical Campus Road, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

Junior W. Walls

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Junior Wilson Walls, 70, of Martinsburg, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at his home.

Born April 3, 1927, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Samuel C. and Opal C. Yonker Walls.

He retired as a tool room operator from DuPont.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

On May 4, 1997, he became a 50 year member of the Second Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Virginia Turner Walls; one daughter, Diane Lynn Mulledy of Martinsburg; one son, Larry Wane Walls of Martinsburg; three sisters, Freda Virginia Blasingame, Estella Jean Sterling and Joan Marie Dayton, all of Martinsburg; five brothers, Lester Walls and Gary Walls, both of Martinsburg, Ray Walls of Kearneysville, W.Va., Roger Walls and Willard Walls, both of Inwood, W.Va.; one half sister, Patsy Walls of Martinsburg; one half brother, Brian Walls of Martinsburg; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Zimmerman; and one brother, Virgil Walls.

Services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Second Baptist Church. The Rev. R. Shawn Edwards will officiate.

Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 2015 Boyd Orchard Court, Martinsburg, W.Va., 25401; or to Second Baptist Church, 911 N. High St., Martinsburg, W.Va., 25401.

Katherine E. Burns

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Katherine E. Burns, 70, of 9958 Circle Drive, died Thursday, May 15, 1997, at her home.

Born Feb. 27, 1927, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Earl and Lena Smith Sheffler Sr.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray C. Burns, on Jan. 24, 1996.

She was employed by the former Stanley Co. in Chambersburg, Pa.

She is survived by five daughters, Sandra J. "Dolly" McGowan of Sarasota, Fla., Betty Schooley and Barbara Pietras, both of West Palm Beach, Fla., Edith A. Rice of Fayetteville, Pa., and Linda Helman of Shippensburg, Pa.; 5 sons, Gary L. Pogue of Clarksville, Ind., Leroy E. Pogue and Welby "Bill" Burns, both of Chambersburg, Guy L. Orris of Greencastle, Pa., and Vern "Michael" Burns of Virginia Beach, Va.; one sister, Frances Oberry of New Orleans; two brothers, Charles Sheffler of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Ralph Sheffler of Fayetteville; 37 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and two great great-grandsons.

Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

The Rev. Lester F. Stine will officiate.

Burial will be in Norland Cemetery in Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Renal Treatment Center, 250 S. Seventh St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.

Edward E. Thomas

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Edward E. "Eddie" Thomas, 59, of 813 Strite Road, died Thursday, May 15, 1997, at his home.

Born Oct. 21, 1937, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late John W. Thomas and Hazel V. Thomas Binkley.

He was the stepson of the late George Binkley.

He was employed as a mechanic by Hicks Chevrolet-Buick-Volvo-Geo, Greencastle, Pa., for 36 years.

He was a social member of Harry D. Zeigler VFW and the Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion, both of Greencastle.

He was a life member of the Greencastle Sportsmen's Association.

He was an avid hunter and archer.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Evelyn M. Melius Thomas; one daughter, Vickie K. Toms, of Chambersburg; one son, Leslie E. Thomas of Chambersburg; two sisters, Cornelias Lindsay of Hagerstown and Betty L. Minnich of Greencastle; two brothers, John William Thomas and Robert W. Thomas, both of Greencastle; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle.

The Rev. Peter W. Emig will officiate.

Burial will be in Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman, Pa.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Greencastle Sportsmen's Association Inc., P.O. Box 632, Greencastle, Pa. 17225.

Leroy D. Horst

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Leroy D. Horst, 81, 120 B Menno Village, Chambersburg, and formerly of 4793 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas, Pa., died Thursday, May 15, 1997, at Menno Haven.

Born June 23, 1915, in Franklin County, Pa., he was the son of the late Daniel K. and Margretta Shields Horst.

He was a farmer. He also was a former manager of E.L.M. Feeds, St. Thomas.

He owned and operated Carlton Heights Market.

He was a member of Mercersburg Mennonite Church.

He was a life member of St. Thomas Volunteer Fire Co. and the fire police of the company.

He is survived by his wife, Helen A. Cordell Horst; one daughter, Janet Martin of Mercersburg; one son, Leroy Horst Jr. of Lansdale, Pa.; one sister, Ada Eshleman of Chambersburg; two brothers, Harold Horst of Altoona, Pa. and Robert Horst of Greencastle, Pa.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Horst and Norman Horst.

Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Mercersburg Mennonite Church.

The Rev. Lloyd Gingrich, the Rev. Mahlon Eshleman and the Rev. Merle Cordell will officiate.

Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Viewing will be held Sunday from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 6492 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Cove Valley Christian Youth Camp, Little Cove Road, Mercersburg, Pa. 17236.
