Diane K. Gordon

Diane Kay Gordon, 43, of 713 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born in Hagerstown, Dec. 16, 1953, she is the daughter of Ethel Mae Jones of Hagerstown, and the late Robert N. Jones.

She was a graduate of South Hagerstown High School.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Kings Apostle Holiness Church of God.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Lee Gordon; one daughter, Anissa K. Gordon of Hagerstown; four sons, Loderick L. Gordon, Collin L. Gordon, Brandon L. Gordon and Liley L. Gordon, all of Hagerstown; and three sisters, Cynthia Gaskins and Linda Jones, both of Hagerstown, and Deborah Yarberough of Raleigh, N.C.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Kings Apostle Holiness Church of God. The Rev. Derrick Kee will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

A viewing will be held at the church Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Arrangements are by Watson Funeral Home, 24 W. Bethel St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Erma M. Burkholder

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Erma M. Burkholder, 73, a resident of Menno Haven, and formerly of 784 Meadowbrook Lane, Chambersburg, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, at Menno-Haven.

Born May 19, 1923, in Fulton County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Herman and Elizabeth M. Shives Keyser.

Her husband, John F. Burkholder Sr., died in 1989.

She was employed with Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg for 15 years, retiring in 1985. She was previously employed with the former Chambersburg Laundry for 10 years.

She was a member of Church of God, Warmspring Road, Chambersburg.

Prior to her illness, she volunteered at Unity Club of Franklin County in Chambersburg.

She is survived by two daughters, Joyce J. Trump of Chambersburg, and Victoria L. Bard of Greencastle, Pa.; two sons, Gary E. Gelsinger and John F. Burkholder Jr., both of Chambersburg; three sisters, Dorcas Brake of Greencastle, and Vada Pine and Sara A. McGowan, both of Chambersburg; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Donna R. Rife; one sister, Martha Hamilton; two brothers, Robert and Homer Keyser; and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Donald J. Ream will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens in Chambersburg.

A viewing will be held at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Larry C. Baer

MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Larry C. Baer, 47, of 12080 Punch Bowl Road, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident, one mile south of Shimpstown in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, Pa.

Born Oct. 26, 1949, in Hagerstown, he is the son of Charles E. and Doris Wishard Baer of Mercersburg.

He was employed in inventory control at Staples Distribution Center in Hagerstown.

He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church of Waynesboro.

He was a former member of Moose Lodge 1790 and Clarence Armstrong V.F.W. Post 6241, both in Mercersburg.

He enjoyed hunting and the outdoors.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Samantha Westurn of Mercersburg; one sister, Kim Timmons of Mercersburg; one granddaughter; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Following cremation, a memorial service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Mount Tabor Brethren in Christ Church in Mercersburg. The Rev. Roy E. Brake Sr. will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to Mount Tabor Brethren in Christ Church, c/o Harvey Bricker, 11123 Blairs Valley Road, Mercersburg, Pa. 17236.

Wilbur T. Jesson, Sr.

Wilbur Thomas Jesson, Sr., 86, of 923 Marion St., Hagerstown, died Sunday, May 18, 1997, at his home.

Born Feb. 15, 1911, in Barker, N.Y., he was the son of the late Merritt R. Jesson and Florence Robinson Jesson Raymond.

He was a graduate of New York University.

He retired from First National Bank of Maryland, and also was employed with J.C. Penney Co.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.

He was a member of Friendship Lodge 84 A.F.&A.M.; Ali Ghan Shrine of Cumberland, Md.; V.F.W. Post 695 of Waynesboro, Pa.; AMVETS Post 10; American Legion Funkstown Post 211; Redmen of Williamsport Tribe 84; and Elks Lodge 378.

He is survived by his wife, June Gordon Jesson; one son, Wilbur T. Jesson, Jr. of Hagerstown; one sister, Doris V. Curry of Vancouver, Wash.; one brother, Robert Jesson of Lockport, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.

Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Garland H. Hooe, Jr.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Garland Hurst "Chum" Hooe, Jr., 66, of Charles Town, died Friday, May 16, 1997, at University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Born Feb. 22, 1931, in Purcellville, Va., he was the son of the late Garland H., Sr. and Constance Osbourn Hooe.

He was a graduate of Harpers Ferry High School in Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

He retired from Jefferson County Board of Education, and was previously an instructor at Eastern Panhandle Training Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He is survived by three brothers, Mack L. Hooe of Millville, W.Va., and H. Paxson Hooe and David O. "Pete" Hooe, both of Charles Town; one niece and three nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia Stevens; and one brother, Shirley Sandy Hooe.

A memorial graveside service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town. The Rev. Daniel Montague will officiate. Burial will be in Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town.

There will be no visitation.

Memorial donations may be made to Eastern Panhandle Training Center, 116 E. King St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town.

Irma L. Bishop

Irma Louise Bishop, 78, of 17945 Pin Oak Road, Hagerstown, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born June 19, 1918, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Oscar J. and Myrtle P. Duncan Dennis.

Her first husband, Abner W. Walters, died in 1945.

Her second husband, George M. Bishop, died in 1988.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church.

She also was a member of Eagles 694 Auxiliary, and an avid bingo player.

She is survived by one daughter, Susan Katz of Galveston, Texas; two sons, Dennis Walters and Jeffrey Lynn Bishop, both of Hagerstown; four sisters, Frances Long of Waynesboro, Pa., Dorothy Hartman of Hagerstown, Elva Vaughn of Reisterstown, Md., and Gladys Dennis of Hagerstown; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 802 Summit Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Dennis L. Upton will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle, Pa.

The family will receive friends at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, today from 7 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Community Rescue Service Inc., 511 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Mary F. Knicly

Mary Frances Knicly, 89, formerly of 10 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at Coffman Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 25, 1907, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late John M. and Julia Neibert Hogan.

She was a member of St. Matthew's United Methodist Church.

She is survived by five sisters, Julia Donovan of Flushing, N.Y., Naomi Horn, Ruth Troupe and Betty Meeker, all of Hagerstown, and Doris McCallum of Bethesda, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Haines and Mildred Weller; and two brothers, John Hogan and Bob Hogan.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery, 1601 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Raymond Lytle will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

The family requests the omission of flowers. Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, 443 W. Franklin St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Arrangements are being handled by Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Zane R. Shaefer

Zane Ralph Shaefer, 71, of Sunrise Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, May 17, 1997, at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore.

Born June 27, 1925, in Imler, Pa., he was the son of the late Ralph C. and Ruth E. Ickes Shaefer Wright.

He retired after 20 years as owner of Red Byrd Restaurant in Keedysville.

He also worked at the former Fairchild Aircraft Co. in Hagerstown, and at Sears Roebuck in Hagerstown.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.

He attended Zion Assembly of God Church in Maugansville.

He was a member of Mount Pisgh Lodge 443 F.&A.M. of Greencastle, Pa., Harrisburg Consistory and Zembo Temple in Harrisburg, Pa.

He also was a member of Mercersburg American Legion Post 517, and a life member of Greencastle Sportmen's Association and McClellan Gun Club of Keedysville.

He served on the board of directors of Keedysville Bank.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Oldham Shaefer, whom he married Sept. 24, 1946; one daughter, Linda Graham of Greencastle; one son, Marvin Z. Shaefer of Greencastle; one stepson, Delmos Oldham Sr. of Waynesboro, Pa.; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; and one uncle.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle.

The Rev. Joseph Quesenberry will officiate.

Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Greencastle.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Memorial donations may be made in Shaefer's memory to Shriner's Childrens Hospital, 8400 Roosevelt Blvd., Philadelphia, Pa. 19152-1299 or to the charity of one's choice.
