Carrie E. Sterling

Carrie Elizabeth Sterling, 82, of Ravenwood Nursing Home, and formerly of Sterling Road, Williamsport, Md., died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born Aug. 15, 1914, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John K. and Elsie Mae Rockwell Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Lee Sterling, in 1994.

She was a member of West End Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and a deaconess.

She also was a member of Gideon Auxiliary and a former member of the Williamsport Homemakers Club.

She is survived by four daughters, Elizabeth Mae "Susie" Myers and Carolyn Marie Suman, both of Williamsport, Sheryl Kay Ebersole and Christine Elaine Banzhoff, both of Hagerstown; three sons, W. Lee Sterling Jr., John Norman Sterling and Ralph Edwin Sterling, all of Williamsport; five sisters, Helen Williams and Elsie M. Evans, both of Funkstown, Josephine Stouffer of Arlington, Va., Mary Flurie of Greencastle, Pa., and Alice Kercheval of Hagerstown; two brothers, Paul Smith of Hagerstown and John R. "Jack" Smith of Funkstown; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. James C. Brinkley will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association, 92 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740; Gideons International, Inc., or the West End Baptist Church, 101 Buena Vista Ave., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Madeline M. H. Bowen

RICHMOND, Va. - Madeline M. Higgins Bowen, 61, of Richmond, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond.

Born Oct. 16, 1935 in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Charles T. and Maude L. Higgins.

She was employed as a beautician.

She attended Chamberlayne Baptist Church, Richmond.

She is survived by her husband, Richard A. Bowen; two daughters, Vickie Puffenburger and Sandy Wood, both of Ganotown, W.Va.; three sisters, Marjoil Texter of Chambersburg, Pa., Betty Hemphill of Hagerstown, and twin sister Maudeline Axton of Ventura, Calif.; two brothers, Charles "Whitey" Higgins of Pinesburg, Md., and Lester "Bud" Higgins; three grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Pittman Sr.

Services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsburg, Va. Burial will be in Signal Hill Cemetery, Mechanicsburg.

The family will receive friends on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Leukemia Research, St. Mary's Hospital, Bremo Road, Richmond, Va., 23261.

Robert W. Sloan

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Robert W. "Bobby" Sloan, 54, of Martinsburg, died Friday, May 23, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born May 12, 1943, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late J. Gerald and Helen Virginia Trimble Sloan.

He attended Eastern Panhandle Training Center day program.

He was a member of Christ Reformed Church.

He is survived by one sister, Ann E. Grapes of Germantown, Md.; and one nephew, Michael E. Grapes of Gaithersburg, Md.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg. Thomas E. Hartshorn will officiate.

The family will receive friends Monday evening at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

Ella C. Weber

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Ella Caroline Weber, 103, of Valley View Nursing Home, died Saturday, May 24, 1997, at the home.

Born March 24, 1894, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Uberta and Emma Elizabeth Clay Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Sampson Belmont Weber, in 1966.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Ruth M. Avey of Hedgesville, W.Va.; one son, Glendon B. Weber of Berkeley Springs; one sister, Mildred Bowman of Mt. Airy, Md.; six grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great--great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Zourie Michael and Ruth Funk; three brothers, John Grove, Charlie Grove and Herbert Grove; and one granddaughter.

Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hunter-Anderson Funeral Home, 106 S. Mercer St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Robert E. Moales will officiate. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery in Morgan County.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

M. Gladys Fickes

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - M. Gladys Fickes, 61, of 2610 Banbury Lane, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, as the result of an auto accident.

Born in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Earl A. and Nancy P. Finkey Oller.

Her husband, David Edward Fickes, died in 1989.

She was formerly employed by Fries, Etc., and Bavarian Pretzel in the Chambersburg Mall.

She was a member of the Chambersburg Mall Walkers Club.

She enjoyed traveling and had recently returned from a cruise through the Panama Canal.

She is survived by three daughters, Diane E. McBeth and Denise E. Barnhart, both of Chambersburg, and Deborah E. Bender of Newburg, Pa.; three sons, David E. Fickes of Reamstown, Pa., Dwayne E. Fickes of Chambersburg, and Darryl E. Fickes of Orrstown, Pa.; three sisters, Mary Jane Lesher of Pinellas Park, Fla., Pearl Hartmire and Evelyn Johnson, both of Dry Run, Pa.; two brothers, Boyd Oller of Gettysburg, Pa., and William Oller of Orrstown; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Daryl M. Elliott will officiate. Burial will be in Park Lawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends at Geisel Funeral Home on Tuesday from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Arrangements are by Michael Tod Good Funeral Home, Reamstown.

Mary J. C. Johnson

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Mary Joyce Clark Johnson, of Cincinnati, and formerly of Hagerstown, died April 30, 1997, in Cincinnati.

She was the daughter of Pauletta Tryman of Hagerstown.

She is survived by her husband, John A. Johnson; five children; eight grandchildren; one sister; one brother; and one uncle.

Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Ellen V. Weakley

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Ellen V. Weakley, 81, of Martinsburg, died Friday, May 23, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg.

Born March 5, 1916, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Domenico Petrocchi and Sarah V. Lewin Shinn.

She was formerly employed at Berkeley Woolen and Interwoven Mills.

She was a member of Christ Reformed Church for over fifty years; Dillon Sunday school class; Friendship Circle and Christian Endeavor.

She was a member of Golden Rule Chapter 69; O.E.S.; and Palestine Commandery Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harry A. Weakley, whom she married on June 10, 1938; one daughter, Harriet E. Johnson of Martinsburg; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Richard Weakley.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home. Thomas E. Hartshorn will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home, where Golden Rule Chapter 69, O.E.S. will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Christ Reformed Church Building Fund, 117 E. Burke St., Martinsburg, W.Va. 25401.

Horace D. Cook

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Horace David Cook, 59, of Charles Town, died Wednesday, May 21, 1997, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital, Ranson, W.Va.

Born Nov. 11, 1937, in Berryville, Va., he was the son of the late Frank and Viela Bell Cook.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Cook.

He was a horse trainer at the Charles Town Races.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by two stepdaughters, Vivian S. Jett of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Nadine Thomas of Winchester, Va.; two stepsons, Timothy Campbell of Manassas, Va., and Donald Curry of Winchester; two sisters, Helen Cook of Front Royal, Va., and Phyllis Cook of Harrisburg, Pa.; one brother, George Cook of Pennsylvania; 14 step-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Elsie Gray; and two brothers, Lindsay Cook and James Cook.

Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Jefferson Chapel Funeral Home, Ranson. Bishop Walter Newman will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, W.Va.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
