George E. Finney

George Edward Finney, 75, of 11112 S. Mulberry St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, May 31, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Jan. 19, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Merle James and Anna Rosalie Burger Finney.

He was preceded in death by his wife, E. Rosemary Finney, in 1994.

He was a Big Band drummer during the 1940s and 1950s with the Bill Fraley Orchestra & Bob Artz Band.

A U.S. Army veteran, he served during World War II.

He was a 53-year member of Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion; World War II Last Man's Club; charter member of Potomac Fish & Game Club; lifetime member of Musician's Union Local 770; and AMVETS Post 10.

He is survived by one daughter, Marsha A. Knicley of Williamsport; one son, Michael James Finney of New York City; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Jane Sawyer.

Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

The Rev. Jack Fullen will officiate.

Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services on Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion, 405 Northern Avenue, Hagerstown, Md. 21742.

T. Craig Shade

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - T. Craig Shade, 39, of Martinsburg, died Friday, May 30, 1997, at City Hospital.

Born Jan. 22, 1958, in Martinsburg, he was the son of Ralph R. and Lillian Willingham Shade of Inwood, W.Va.

He graduated in 1976 from Musselman High School.

He was an orchardist and an avid hunter.

He was a member of Mountain Chapel Presbyterian Church, Gerrardstown, W.Va.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Candice M. Shade at home; one son, Matthew C. Shade, at home; two sisters, Karen D. Shade of Inwood and Kimberly D. McNamee of Martinsburg; one brother, Jeffrey S. Shade of Gerrardstown; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

James R. Jackson will officiate.

Burial will be in Gerrardstown Presbyterian Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Mountain Chapel Presbyterian Church, Route 1, Box 367, Inwood, W.Va. 25428.

H. Winifred Martin

H. Winifred "Winnie" Martin, 86, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.

Born Aug. 12, 1910, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late James Monroe and Lilly Belle Everhart Light.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald E. Martin, in 1979.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She was a member of the Funkstown Homemakers and served as treasurer for many years.

She is survived by two brothers, Aaron E. Light and William T. "Ted" Light, both of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred V. Donaldson and Edna Henry; two brothers, Russell Light and James M. Light Jr.

Graveside services will be held today at 10 a.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery, 600 S. Potomac St., Hagerstown.

The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Blanche P. McKimmey

LEESBURG, Va. - Blanche Penner McKimmey, 48, of Leesburg, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, in Leesburg.

Born June 16, 1948, in Frederick Md., she was the daughter of the late Marion Weaver and Margie Penner Weaver Thompson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard "Billy" J. McKimmey, in 1985.

She was employed as a secretary by Dr. Mitchell in Leesburg until retiring in 1995 due to her illness.

She was a member of Brownsville Church of the Brethren, Brownsville, Md.

She also was a member of Eagles of Brunswick and Farm Bureau in Leesburg.

She is survived by one son, Marty M. McKimmey of Leesburg; one half-sister, Carolyn Thompson Clemens of Winchester, Va.; one aunt, Jackie Coulter of Florida; and two cousins.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Loudoun Funeral Chapel, 158 Catoctin Circle Southeast, Leesburg.

The Rev. R. Thomas Fralin Jr. and the Rev. Albert Huston will officiate.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Lovettsville, Va.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Betty E. Harrison

Betty Ellen Harrison, 66, of 32 Mealey Parkway, Hagerstown, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at her home.

Born Jan. 5, 1931, in St. Thomas, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Samuel Lee and Katherine Warden Guessford.

She retired from Sears and Roebuck, Hagerstown, in 1993, after nearly 30 years of service.

More recently, she was employed by her son at Desmond's Bittersweet Gallery, Hagerstown.

She attended St. Euphrasia Catholic High School in Baltimore and was valedictorian of her graduating class of 1947.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Harrison Eshelman of Germantown; one son, Steven James Harrison of Hagerstown; one sister, Catherine Blair of Hagerstown; two brothers, Samuel Lee Guessford of Sharpsburg, and Robert Guessford of Hagerstown; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Lee Guessford Sr.

Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

The Rev. Andrew S. Mohl and the Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate.

Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, Md. 21740.

Catherine L. Small

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Catherine L. Small, 84, of Shepherdstown, died Friday, May 30, 1997, at Winchester Medical Center, Winchester, Va.

Born April 5, 1913, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Howard C. and Mazie Hixon Lowe.

She was a member of Greensburg United Methodist Church.

She was a member of AARP.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Floyd C. Small; one daughter, Bonna Nakopoulos of Hagerstown; one brother, Howard H. Lowe of Martinsburg, W.Va.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert L. Lowe.

Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

The Rev. John R. Yost will officiate.

Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ira W. Keech

MOUNT WOLF, Pa. - Ira W. Keech, 85, of East Manchester Township, died Wednesday, May 28, 1997, at York Hospital, York, Pa.

Born March 25, 1912, in Spry, Pa., he was the son of the late John I. and Leah Axe Keech.

He was a 1929 graduate of William Penn Senior High School.

He served eight years as a sheriff's deputy before joining the domestic relations office staff.

He had a total of 24 years of service before retiring.

He was a member of Star View United Church of Christ, Mount Wolf.

He was a member of BPOE 213, York, Pa.; Loyal Order of Moose 307 Chickies Rock, Columbia, Pa.; Victory Club; Viking Athletic Association; Rooster Club; 12th Ward Democratic Club; and 13th Ward Political Club.

He is survived by his wife, Betty C. Kerns Keech; two daughters, Nadine Worley of York and Joan Warner of Blue Ridge Summit, Pa.; three sons, Ira R. Keech of Dover, Pa., Ned E. Keech of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Wade E. Keech of East Berlin, Pa.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services will be today at 10 a.m. at Etzweiler Funeral Home, 1111 E. Market St., York.

The Rev. Gary J. Aichle and the Rev. Roger Keech will officiate.

Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home today one hour prior to the service.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2997 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion, Pa. 17356.

James F. Reel

KNOXVILLE, Md. - James Frederick Reel, 65, of 2141 Reed Road, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, Gaithersburg, Md.

Born March 3, 1932, in Morgantown, W.Va., he was the son of the late George Frederick and Mabel Engle Reel.

He was employed as a photographer at Applied Physics Laboratory, Johns Hopkins University in Silver Spring, Md., and later in Howard County.

He enjoyed flying and was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He is survived by his wife, Sharon Renfro Reel, whom he married June 21, 1958; one daughter, Karen Bernstein of Frederick, Md.; one son, Darrel Reel of Yellow Springs, Frederick County; one sister, Sara Roby of Elida, Ohio; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at Robert E. Dailey & Son Funeral Home, 1201 N. Market St., Frederick.

The Rev. David C. Dawson will officiate.

Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
