Lincoln H. Sauter
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Retired U.S. Army Spec. 7 Lincoln H. "Linc" Sauter, 81, of Piney Mountain, and formerly of 35 S. Potomac St., and of Luther Ridge, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Feb. 13, 1915, in Lyon County, near George, Iowa, he was the son the late Henry and Alma D. Groth Sauter.
He was a 1933 graduate of Fulda High School, Minnesota.
He attended a number of courses while in the military.
He was a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Army.
He served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
He also served in Australia, France and Germany and at various bases in the United States.
Following his discharge from the Army he was a computer programmer for the U.S. government in Bethesda, Md.
He then worked for a short time at Waynesboro Builders Supply.
For seven years, he was assistant circulation manager at the Record Herald, Waynesboro, Pa.
He was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, where he taught the Adult Sunday School class and served on various committees within the church.
He also was a PTA president while serving in France and participated with the Dudes and Doll Square Club; was a member of the South Chapter 2977 AARP, Waynesboro, and the National AARP; and was active with American Field Services.
He volunteered with the Franklin County Literacy Council and the Mount Hope Prison Ministry in Hagerstown.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel J. Kuhn Sauter of Luther Ridge, whom he married on Jan. 27, 1946; one daughter, Gale A. Kennedy of Newark Del.; five sons, Kenneth W. Sauter of Dallas, Richard C. Sauter of Newark, Martin T. Sauter of Belleville, Ill., Russell W. Sauter of Greencastle, Pa., and David A Sauter of Scottsdale, Pa.; four sisters, Esther Ellofson of Garden Grove, Calif., Violet Leggett of Moundsview, Minn., Gladys Zech of Bay Shore, N.Y., and M. Adeline Johnson of Pequot Lakes, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S. Church St., Waynesboro.
Pastor Richard A. Seaks will officiate.
Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 South Broad St., Waynesboro.

David C. Martin, Sr.
ST. THOMAS, Pa. - David C. Martin Sr., 73, of St. Thomas, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 1996, in Harrisburg, Pa.
Born May 23, 1923, in Carbondale, Pa., he was the son of the late William and Lizzie Ann Phillips Martin.
He was a veteran of World War II and served as a sergeant with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was seriously wounded in the battle of Tarawa on Nov. 20, 1943.
He was awarded the Purple Heart.
After serving in the military, he joined the Pennsylvania State Police in 1945.
He served for 36 years and retired as a captain.
He attended the Open Door Church, Chambersburg, Pa.
He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He is survived by his wife Jeanette Himmelreich Martin; two daughters, Elizabeth Martin Sargent of Virginia Beach, Va., and Dianne Martin Glaze of Hagerstown; one son, David C. Martin, Jr. of Murraysville, Pa.; one sister, Evelyn George of Scranton, Pa.; two brothers, Warren Martin and William Martin, both of Carbondale; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial celebration will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Open Door Church, 600 Miller St., Chambersburg.

Beatrice A. Munson
Beatrice A. Munson, 89, of 17817 Bluebell Drive, Hagerstown, who died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996, was the daughter of the late Nelson S. Clary and Alma Crane Clary Bell.
Edith L. Benedict Fox
QUINCY, Pa. - Edith Lavinia Benedict Fox, 96, of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of Modesto, Calif, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 1996, at the home.
Born Jan. 23, 1898, in Quincy, she was the daughter of the late Daniel M. and Isabella Price Norris Benedict.
She moved to Modesto in 1951, where she received her G.E.D. and her LPN certificate.
She helped new mothers become adjusted to their lives with a child.
She was employed by the Memorial Hospital and Doctors Hospital, both in Modesto as an LPN.
She was baptized into the Old German Baptist Church, Falling Springs Congregation, Chambersburg, in 1918.
After moving to Modesto, she was a member of the Old German Baptist Church, Modesto District, for 42 years.
After returning to this area, she became a member of the Antietam Congregation of Old German Baptist Church near Waynesboro.
She is survived by one son, Harold B. Fox of Southhampton, N.J., four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, John R. Fox and David J. Fox, and eleven sisters and brothers.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Antietam Congregation Old German Baptist Church, Route 316 near Waynesboro.
Elders James Hess, Willis Hess, George Mason, Donald Hess and Harold Slothour will officiate.
Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy.

Gladys V. Bowders
QUINCY, Pa. - Gladys V. Bowders, 87, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of 161 N. Allison St., Greencastle, Pa., died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996, at the nursing home.
Born Sept. 20, 1909, in Greencastle, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth Rogers-Wallech.
She retired after 18 years of service with the former H.J. Heinz Co. in Chambersburg, Pa.
She was a member of Otterbein United Brethren Church, Greencastle.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Merle L. Bowders, whom she married on May 18, 1929, and who resides with his daughter in Waynesboro, Pa.; one daughter Audrey Snowberger of Waynesboro; one son, Albert Bowders of Baltimore; one sister, Eleanor Doyle of Haines City, Fla.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by 13 sisters and brothers.
Services will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, Inc., 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle.
The Rev. David G. Rawley will officiate.
Burial will be in the Beautiful View Cemetery, State Line, Md.

Edith N. Shackelford
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Edith N. Shackelford, 73, of Canterbury of Shepherdstown Nursing Home, and formerly of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996, at the nursing home.
Born Feb. 26, 1923, in Bakerton, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Emory and Laura Dopson Springer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James C. Shackelford.
She was a member of the Winchester Avenue Christian Church.
She is survived by one son, James N. Shackelford of Inwood, W.Va., and three grandchildren, April Dawn Shackelford, James Shackelford Jr. and Alison Shackelford.
She was preceded in death by one stepson, Kenneth Shackelford.
Services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.
The Rev. Douglas Hollida will officiate.
Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Elizabeth J. "Libby" Stinger, 84, of 124 South Fourth St., died Thursday, Nov. 21, 1996, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born April 13, 1912, in Shippensburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late John I. and Bessie L. Bowen Angle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Stinger, on Jan. 8, 1982.
She was a 1930 graduate of Shippensburg High School.
She attended Cumberland Valley Normal School, Shippensburg.
She was employed as a waitress by Schoenberger's Restaurant, Chambersburg, retiring in 1974 after 18 years.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary
Richard E. Schleigh
EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP, N.J. - Richard Edward Schleigh, 60, of Egg Harbor township, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 1996, in Atlantic City Hospital, Atlantic City, N.J.
Born June 15, 1936, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Catharine M. Deuter Schleigh of Hagerstown and the late Charles M. Schleigh.
He was a 1954 graduate of Hagerstown High School.
He was owner of Customized Retail Services in Mays Landing, N.J.
He was of the Roman Catholic faith.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Artemis Schleigh; two daughters, Barbara Stern of Mays Landing and Catherine Schleigh of Boston; two sons, Richard E. Schleigh Jr. and Bryan Schleigh, both of Mays Landing; one sister, Kathleen E. Gossard of Hagerstown; three brothers, Charles M. Schleigh and Robert G. Schleigh, both of Hagerstown, and Thomas A. Schleigh of San Antonio; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be today at St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, N.J., Fiftieth and Second Street, Mays Landing.
