Esther E. Arndt
Esther E. Arndt, 90, of 55 E. Washington St., Hagerstown, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 1996, at Colton Villa Nursing Center, Hagerstown.
Born Oct. 18, 1906, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. and Elizabeth R. Sinn Fritz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Arndt, in 1984.
She is survived by one son, Richard E. Miller of Hagerstown; two sisters, Alice Doud of Williamsport and Betty Cuneen of Grasonville, Md.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Edward H. Heim will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
Visitation will be at the funeral home 30 minutes prior to the service Tuesday.
Ray N. Dietz
Ray Norman Dietz, 60, of Hagerstown, and formerly of Frederick, Md., died Saturday, Nov. 2, 1996, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick.
Born Aug. 27, 1936, in Alexandria, Va., he was the son of the late A. Norman and Helen Gartrell Dietz.
He was a 1954 graduate of Frederick High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served with the 4238th Air Police Squadron. He was honorably discharged in 1958. He was honorably discharged from reserve duty in 1962.
Upon leaving active duty, he joined the Frederick City Police Department. He retired at the rank of lieutenant following nearly 30 years of service. Early in his career, he was in the canine division and patrolled with his dog, "Sultan." He later served as a detective in the criminal investigation division from 1966 to 1977. He then transferred to the patrol division and served as a patrol shift commander from 1978 until his retirement in 1988. While on the police force, he became an expert marksman. One of the highlights of his career was the rescue of a number of people stranded by the flooding from Hurricane Agnes in 1972. He received a letter of appreciation from the Maryland State Police for his rescue efforts.
After retiring from Frederick City Police, he returned to the criminal justice system to serve as a district court commissioner in Frederick County and most recently in Washington County from July 1989 until the time of his death.
He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick.
He was a charter member of Fraternal Order of Police Francis Scott Key Lodge 91 and American Legion Post 11, Frederick, for more than 20 years.
He was an avid photographer.
He enjoyed motorcycling and was a founding member of the Blue Ridge Road Riders.
He was a trained motorcycle safety instructor and taught in the first motorcycle safety classes offered in Frederick County.
He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca L. Dietz of Baltimore and Cynthia J. Dietz of Frederick; one son, Richard W. Dietz of Thurmont, Md.; one sister, Grace E. Darkis of Hagerstown; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. W. Phillip Fogarty will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.
The family will receive friends at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, today and Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Stanley L. Schetrompf
WILLIAMSPORT - Stanley Lee Schetrompf, 70, of 14848 Schetrompf Lane, died Saturday, Nov. 2, 1996, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born June 21, 1926, in Clear Spring, he was the son of Margaret H. Scriever Schetrompf of Williamsport and the late Stanley Schetrompf.
He retired as a salesman with Jewel Tea Co.
He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ of Clear Spring.
He was a lifetime member of Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222, Clear Spring. He was a member of VFW Post of Hagerstown.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Marjorie P. Maphis Schetrompf; two sons, Ronald C. Schetrompf and Gary L. Schetrompf, both of Williamsport; two sisters, Rose Lee Maphis of Nashville, Tenn., and Marie Churchey of Sharpsburg; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Schetrompf.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. Richard Yates will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown, with full military honors conducted by the Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222.

Scott O. Myers
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Scott O. Myers, 28, of 306 E. Franklin St., died Saturday, Nov. 2, 1996, from injuries received in an automobile accident on Pa. 16 west of Greencastle near Upton, Pa.
Born July 27, 1968, he was the son of Richard E. "Buck" and Betty M. Gerhart Myers of Greencastle.
He was a 1987 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School. He also was a graduate of James Rumsey Technical School in Martinsburg, W.Va.
He was employed as a machine operator by Ventura Foods of Chambersburg, Pa.
He was a member of Greencastle Church of the Brethren.
He was a member of Moose Lodge 842 of Chambersburg.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Suzanne Marie Myers of Fairmont, W.Va., and Stephanie Lynn Myers of Parkville, Md.; one brother, Shawn R. Myers of Greencastle; paternal grandmother, Grace L. Myers, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, Quincy, Pa.; one aunt and one uncle.
Services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Greencastle Church of the Brethren, 36 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Rob Thacker will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

Raymond W. Baumgardner
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Raymond William "Baumy" Baumgardner, 81, of 158 N. Carlisle St., died Sunday, Nov. 3, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 21, 1914, in Greencastle, he was the son of the late Raymond William and Elva Miller Baumgardner.
He attended Greencastle High School.
He built and operated for more than 30 years the Richmond Hill Ski Area near Fort Loudon, Pa. Also, he was the owner of the former Baumgardner's Cafe in Greencastle.
He was the builder and developer of the Baumgardner Development in Greencastle.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Christ in Greencastle.
He was a member of BPO Elks No. 600 of Chambersburg, Pa. He was a social member of Frank L. Carbaugh American Legion of Greencastle. He was a former member of Greencastle Lions Club and Greencastle Rotary Club.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Benchoff Baumgardner, whom he married on March 17, 1932; two sons, R. Edward Baumgardner of New Cumberland, Pa., and Jeffrey L. Baumgardner of Sudbury, Mass.; one sister, Mildred Diffenderfer of Fayetteville, Pa.; one brother, Richard L. Baumgardner of Greencastle; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, William Gordon Baumgardner; two sisters, Josephine Rockwell and Genevieve Pensinger; and one brother, Maurice Baumgardner.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Donald McBride will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, Pa.

Leslie Horner
HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Leslie "Junie" Horner, 49, of Hedgesville, died Sunday, Nov. 3, 1996, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born July 27, 1947, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Charles and Thelma Rockwell Horner.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Faye Young Horner.
He was employed by Schmidts Bakery.
He was a member of Martinsburg Moose Lodge 120.
He is survived by one daughter, Rachel Lynn Horner, at home; two sons, Jason Daniel Horner and Jacob Samuel Horner, both at home; six sisters, Dorothy Cook and Betty Kelly, both of Falling Waters, W.Va., Mary Basore of Hedgesville, Margaret Newcomb of Martinsburg, Helen McDaniel of Tomahawk, W.Va., and Norma J. Horner of Gerrardstown, W.Va.; and two brothers, Roger L. Horner of Tomahawk and Paul R. Horner of Hedgesville.
He was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.
Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. Burial will be in Tomahawk Cemetery, Tomahawk.

Harold J. Phillips Sr.
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Harold J. Phillips Sr., 66, of 1020 Swamp Fox Road, and formerly a resident of Gold-N-Gray Retirement Home, Dry Run, Pa., died Saturday, Nov. 2, 1996, at his home.
Born Nov. 9, 1929, in Parksburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Emory and Bertha Wolf Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Delores M. Kline Phillips, in 1984.
He was employed by Brechbill and Helman Construction Co., Chambersburg, and retired after 20 years of service.
He attended New Franklin Assembly of God Church, Chambersburg.
He is survived by six daughters, Bertha Paine and Debra L. Williams, both of Chambersburg, Teresa Diane Gallup of Millers, Md., Susan L. Phillips of Shippensburg, Pa., Sandy K. Lanehart of Venice, Fla., and Barbara J. Stoops of Greencastle, Pa.; three sons, Harold J. Phillips Jr. of Valdosta, Ga., Rodney L. Phillips and Gregory R. Phillips, both of Chambersburg; two brothers, Perry Phillips of Coatsville, Pa., and Edgar Phillips of Philadelphia; 17 half-brothers and half-sisters; nine grandchildren; and one step-granddaughter.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at New Franklin Assembly of God Church, 2355 New Franklin Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Sean A. Hinton and the Rev. Chris J. Light will officiate. Burial will be in Prices Church Cemetery, near Waynesboro, Pa.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mary C. Coble, 94, a resident of Menno Haven, and formerly of 2425 Lincoln Way West, died Friday, Nov. 1, 1996, at Menno-Haven.
Born Dec. 25, 1901, in Greene Township, Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late David and Rose Freet Cook.
Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Donald C. Nolder and the Rev. Vernon D. Isner will officiate. Burial will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
