Frederick S. Rowland
BOONSBORO - Frederick Slifer Rowland, 93, of 8507 Mapleville Road, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 1996, at Fahrney-Keedy Home in Boonsboro.
Born Feb. 22, 1903, in Breathedsville, Md., he was the son of the late John E. and Laura E. Slifer Rowland.
He was a graduate of Pierce Business School in Philadelphia.
He was a retired employee of Washington County Hospital.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theatre.
He was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren.
He is survived by one cousin, Helen R. Fisher of Hagerstown.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Margaret E. Rowland and Mary E. Rowland; and one brother, Reichard J. Rowland.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Manor Church Cemetery in Tilghmanton. The Rev. Loyal H. Vanderveer will officiate.
There will be no viewing.

Ida B.H. Saum
Ida Brewer Heard Saum, 79, of 610 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Dec. 25, 1916, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Leroy Sr. and Nina McCardel Heard.
She retired from Sears after 23 years of service.
She was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the adult choir.
She also was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion Women's Auxiliary.
She is survived by one daughter, Judith S.P. McCarter of San Diego; one son, Gerald Wayne Saum of Hagerstown; one brother, Edwin Leroy Heard Jr. of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Margaret Wachter.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown. The Rev. Jack D. Cook will officiate.
There will be no visitation.

Roy E. Grossnickle
MYERSVILLE, Md. - Roy E. Grossnickle, 79, of Myersville, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 1996, at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown.
Born Aug. 16, 1917, in Middlepoint, Md., he was the son of the late Elmer G. and Annie V. Wiles Grossnickle.
His wife, Margaret Harshman Grossnickle, died in 1992.
He retired in 1981 from Capital Dairy in Frederick, after 20 years of service. He previously farmed in the Wolfsville area and worked at Main's Ice Cream in Middletown, Md., for 10 years.
He is survived by one daughter, Doris Cooper of Myersville; one son, Dick Grossnickle of Wolfsville; one sister, Catherine Shank of Middletown; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Thomas Grossnickle.
Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Myersville. The Rev. David Howell will officiate. Burial will be in Grossnickle Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Myersville.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - A. Stanley Bartles, 82, of 1115 Mason Dixon Road, died Friday, Nov. 22, 1996, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.
Born Nov. 15, 1914, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late Victor O. and Nellie Repp Bartles.
He retired from Western Maryland Railway in Hagerstown, after 40 years of service.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Frances M. Binkley Bartles, whom he married March 12, 1938; one daughter, Elouise M. Statler of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; one son, Richard E. Bartles of Greencastle; two sisters, Louise Shuck and Naomi Ardinger, both of Hagerstown; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Marie Shindle; and one brother, Pearre Bartles.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle. The Rev. Stuart Troutman will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.

John W. McNeal
John W. McNeal, 79, of Hagerstown and Buckhannon, W.Va., died Friday, Nov. 22, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Feb. 18, 1917, in Ellamore, W.Va., he was the son of the late Thomas and Mamie B. Elbon McNeal.
His wife, Emma McNeal, preceded him in death.
He owned a farm in Sago, W.Va., and had previously been self-employed in Baltimore
He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of American Legion Morris Frock Post 42 in Hagerstown, and Elks Club of Buckhannon.
He is survived by two sisters, Mary E. Freeze and Marguerite
Mary C. Hahn
KEEDYSVILLE - Mary C. Hahn, 84, of Mount Carmel Church Road, and formerly of Edgemont, Md., died Saturday, Nov. 23, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 27, 1912, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Albert and Mary E. Lung Schildt.
She was employed with Waynesboro Shoe Factory and Stanley Co. in Chambersburg, Pa.
She is survived by one son, Marvin A. Hahn of Keedysville; four sisters, Josephine Smith and Dolly Barkdoll, both of Waynesboro, Mary Wade of Cascade and Thelma Shaw of Port Orange, Fla.; two brothers, John Schildt of Waynesboro, Glenn Schildt of Mercersburg, Pa.; three grandsons; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Earl Schildt, Paul Schildt, Aaron Schildt and Charles Schildt.
Graveside services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Harbaugh Cemetery near Rouzerville, Pa. The Rev. Harold Walton will officiate.

Ethel Von "Ikie" Heiston, 78, a resident of Williamsport Nursing Home, died Sunday, Nov. 24, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.
Born April 10, 1918, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin E. and Bessie Mauck Lowe.
Her husband, Junior Leroy Heiston, died in 1985.
She was employed by Murphy Dry Cleaners for many years.
She was a member of Washington Square United Methodist Church, where she served on the Altar Guild for many years.
She also was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Queen Esther Chapter 3; and Funkstown American Legion.
She is survived by one stepson, Ronald Heiston of Hagerstown; three sisters, Suzanne Hollis and Sara Jane Hoyle, both of Hagerstown, and Elizabeth Miller of McAllen, Texas; three stepgrandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Edgar M. Lowe and Francis C. Lowe.
Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Washington Square United Methodist Church, 538 Washington Ave., Hagerstown. The Rev. Harold P. Atkins will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Charles E. Crumbacker
Charles E. Crumbacker, 74, of 15943 B Broadfording Road, Hagerstown, died Monday, Nov. 25, 1996, at his home.
Born Aug. 14, 1922, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William C. and Erma G. James Crumbacker.
He worked as a meat cutter at Clarence Martin Grocery for 36 years. From 1977 until his retirement in 1985, he was employed by the Washington County Board of Education in the maintenance department at North Hagerstown High School.
He was a former member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hagerstown.
He is survived by one daughter, Patsy A. Crumbacker of Hagerstown; one son, Steven C. Crumbacker of Boonsboro; one sister, Catherine Youngblood of San Diego; and three brothers, William Crumbacker, Guy Crumbacker and Warren Crumbacker, all of Hagerstown.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eula Clever and Alice White; and three brothers, James Crumbacker, Jess Crumbacker and Howard Crumbacker.
Services will be held Wednesday at noon at Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George Limmer will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Williamsport, with a graveside military service conducted by Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion.

Born Nov. 23, 1923, in Wilmington, Del., he was the son of the late P. Gordon Sr. and Agnes West Henry.
He was employed at Sexton Can Co. for 38 years, serving as plant manager until his retirement in 1986.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Martinsburg.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Shockley; and one brother, Dawson Henry.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at Calvary United Methodist Church. The Rev. Al Clipp will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery with masonic graveside services by Robert White Lodge No. 67, A.F.&A.M.

Joanna V.J. Rossi
WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Joanna V. "Penny" Jurgiewicz Rossi, 81, of 203 W. Main St., died Sunday, Nov. 24, 1996, at her home.
Born Dec. 15, 1914, in Dickson City, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Balbina Jurgiewicz. Her early life was spent in Dickson City and New Haven, Conn.
She served in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1946.
During World War II, she worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., doing administrative work. During the 1970s and 1980s, she worked for Waynesboro Area School District as an administrative assistant and a teacher's aide.
She was a member of St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church in Waynesboro.
She had been active in Girl Scouts. Her hobbies included traveling, sewing, and playing bridge.
She is survived by her husband, Adolphus J. Rossi, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, whom she married September 1951; one daughter, Joanne "Penny" Rossi-Monday of Fairfax, Va.; one son, John A. Rossi of Apollo Beach, Fla.; one sister, Ann Pollock of Dickson City; one brother, Barney Jurgiewicz of Dickson City; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Yurgiewicz.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, 12 N. Broad St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hemler as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Roman Catholic Cemetery.
