Mary C. Brake

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mary C. Miller Brake, 95, a resident of ManorCare Nursing Home, and formerly of Waynesboro, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at the nursing home.

Born March 26, 1901, in Quincy Township, Franklin County, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Lydia Mentzer Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert W. Brake, in 1982. She was a life-long resident of the Waynesboro area.

She was employed at Waynesboro Knitting Mill in her early life and later was employed part-time at JC Penney in Waynesboro.

She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro.

She was a member of Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, Joe Stickell American Legion Unit 15 Ladies Auxiliary of Waynesboro and the National AARP.

She is survived by one daughter, Anna B. Pryor of Waynesboro; one sister, Nellie Smith of California; and two grandsons.

She was preceded in death by one son, Robert Brake; three sisters; and four brothers.

Services will be held Monday, at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. Wayne P. Lupolt will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Monday at the funeral home.

Herbert L. Ingram

SMITHSBURG - Herbert L. Ingram, 68, of Edgemont Road, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 22, 1928, in Dargan, he was the son of the late John Thomas and Viola Virginia Burgan Ingram.

He was employed by Mack Trucks Inc., Hagerstown, retiring in 1990 after 28 years of service.

A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served during World War II.

He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Chewsville.

He also was a member of AARP.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth G. Wolfe Ingram; three daughters, Patricia Ann Eckstine and JoAnn M. Bolton, both of Waynesboro, Pa., and Cindy L. Shank of Damascus, Md.; two sons, Jeffery L. Ingram of Smithsburg and Edward E. Ingram of Waynesboro; one sister, Martha Wilkerson of Hagerstown; six brothers, Bobby Ingram and Larry Ingram, both of Hagerstown, Everly Ingram and Donald Ingram, both of Sharpsburg, Roland Ingram of Keedysville and Willis Ingram of Baltimore; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Eileen Giffin and Virginia Ingram; and two brothers, Buddy Ingram and Thomas Ingram Sr.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg. The Rev. John W. Schildt and the Rev. David A. Shank will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 37, Chewsville, Md. 21721.

Opal P. Nalley

Opal Pauline Nalley, 71, of 800 Pennsylvania Ave., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.

Born March 29, 1925, in Atlanta, she was the daughter of the late Andrew L. and Vera Swafford Harrison.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl William Nalley, on June 23, 1992.

She was employed by E.J. Fennel for 10 years.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by five daughters, Judy M. Fox of Chewsville; Sheila J. Nalley at home, Wanda N. Holliburton of Baton Rouge, La., Sharon D. Holland of Philadelphia and Deborah A. Plain of Hagerstown; two sons, Carl D. Nalley and Kenneth E. Nalley, both of Fort Worth, Texas; one sister, Susan Harrison of Atlanta; one brother, Andrew L. Harrison Jr. of Atlanta; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rest Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Louis L. Emerick will officiate.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

Joseph H. Engle

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Dr. Joseph Harold "Hardy" Engle, 99, of 223 E. Third St., Waynesboro, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at his home.

Born Oct. 27, 1897, in Elizabethtown, Pa., he was the son of the late Simon P. and Salome Heisey Engle.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War I with the American Expeditionary Force in France, Belgium and Germany. After the Armistice was signed, he participated in track and field meets in Paris and other European cities.

He was a 1915 graduate of Elizabethtown High School. He attended Pennsylvania State University. He graduated in 1923 from Juniata College, where he lettered in basketball, track and football, and scored the college's first touchdown.

He was a professor of biology at Juniata College for 10 years.

He took post-graduate courses at the University of Chicago and the University of Pittsburgh. He attended Thomas Jefferson Medical School, Philadelphia. After graduating in 1939, he served a 12-month internship at the Bryn Mawr Hospital.

He continued graduate study in ophthalmology at the graduate school of medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, with clinical training at the Willis Eye Hospital.

In 1941, he moved to Waynesboro and began the practice of ophthalmology, with offices in both Waynesboro and Chambersburg, retiring in 1978. He also served on the staffs of the Waynesboro and Chambersburg hospitals.

He was a member of Waynesboro Church of the Brethren; Franklin County Medical Society; PA Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology, and the American Association of Ophthalmology.

In November 1995 he was inducted into the Juniata College Sports Hall of Fame and of the 20-member charter class.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Conner Engle, whom he married in August 1931; one daughter, the Rev. Prudence B. Yelinek of Waynesboro; one son, William Stephen Engle of Alexandria, Pa., and twin granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Engle and Roy Engle.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Waynesboro Church of the Brethren. The Rev. Brent K. Driver and the Rev. Prudence B. Yelinek will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Waynesboro Church of the Brethren 117 S. Church St., Waynesboro, Pa. 17268.

Arrangements are by Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro.

Herbert S. Jones

Herbert S. "Hoppy" Jones, 81, formerly of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 23, 1915, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William H. and Nellie O. Butts Jones.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and great nephews.

He was the last member of his immediate family.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. Patricia Harper will officiate.

There will be no viewing.

Arrangements are by Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Virgie M.M. Johnson

Virgie Marie Moore Johnson, 74, of 1183 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1996, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village.

Born May 3, 1922, in Frostburg, Md., she was the daughter of the late Charles Johnson and Rose Mae Winebrenner Moore.

She retired from L.H. Johnson Contractor.

She was a member of Christ's Reformed Church.

She is survived by her husband, Lorenzo Harrison Johnson; one daughter, Virginia L. "Gynger" Miller of Hagerstown; one son, William Lorenzo Johnson of Hagerstown; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Andrew K. Coffman Funeral Home, 40 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Lans E. Alexis will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Hazel B. Hiles

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Hazel Bessie Hiles, 74, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital, Berkeley Springs.

Born Oct. 17, 1922, in Needmore, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Roy W. and Ethel Harr Truax.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Arnold Floyd Deshong. Her second husband, James Webster Hiles, preceded her in death on Oct. 25, 1992.

She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, Needmore, Pa.

She also was a member of AARP.

She is survived by two daughters, Joann Miller of Gettysburg, Pa., and Diann Miller of Berkeley Springs; three sons, Arnold Deshong of Gettysburg, Gerald Deshong of Oldtown, Md., and James Deshong of Berkeley Springs, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; several half sisters and brothers; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, Needmore. The Rev. Jack Hiles Sr. and the Rev. Rodney Truax will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery, Needmore.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs.

Carl W. Ott

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Carl W. Ott, 80, of 5667 Jack Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1996, at ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.

Born Sept. 13, 1916, in Richmond Furnace, Pa., he was the son of the late Daniel W. and Jane Rhodes Ott.

He was employed by Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, retiring in 1964 after 15 years of service. Prior to that, he worked as an auto mechanic at several local garages.

He attended St. Thomas Assembly of God Church.

He enjoyed working on cars.

He is survived by his wife, Bertha I. Heinbaugh Ott, whom he married April 30, 1941; one daughter, Shirley Garland of Chambersburg; four sons, James D. Ott of St. Thomas, George A. Ott of Greencastle, Pa., Roger A. Ott and Anthony L. Ott, both of Chambersburg; two sisters, Drucilla Carmack of Chambersburg and Betty Mayhugh of Greencastle; two brothers, Roy Ott and Richard Ott, both of Greencastle; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, three sisters and one brother.

Services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Kenneth L. Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Viewing will be held Saturday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Thomas Assembly of God Church, 173 Rhondel Drive, St. Thomas, Pa. 17252.
