Bessie V.I. Ditch
MONT ALTO, Pa. - Bessie Viola Ickes Ditch, 69, of 316 S. Main St., died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 1996, at Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, Pa.
Born July 12, 1927, in Mont Alto, she was the daughter of the late Samuel F. and Alta Blubaugh Ickes.
She was employed by the Mont Alto Shirt Factory and the Mont Alto Shoe Factory. She also worked as a machine operator at the Freeman Shoe Co., Waynesboro, Pa. For five years she did seasonal work at Musselman's Food Packing, Gardener, Pa.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church, Mont Alto.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde J. Ditch, whom she married July 12, 1948; two daughters, Wanda Jean Ditch and Barbara K. Rotz, both of Mont Alto; two sons, Arthur E. Ickes and Terry L. Ditch, both of Chambersburg; two sisters, Edna Wagaman of Chambersburg and Mabel Ulrich of Waynesboro; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Byers and Lula Moats; and three brothers, Herman Ickes, Samuel Ickes and Harry Ickes.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Robert D. Verno will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy, Pa.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
John J. McEwen
GREENCASTLE, Pa. - John J. McEwen, 73, of 15296 Bowman Court, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at Manor Care Health Services Nursing Center, Chambersburg, Pa.
Born Aug. 9, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Alice Farrell McEwen.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II. He also was a veteran of the Maryland National Guard. He retired after 40 years of service, as chief warrant officer four.
He was a member of St. Mark's Catholic Church, Greencastle.
He also was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, Hagerstown; was a life member of the Harry D. Zeigler VFW Post 6319, Greencastle; a member of the 29th Division Associates Inc. Lantern Post 729, Cascade; 29th Division Associates Inc. Cresap's Rifle Post 78, Frederick, Md.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Margaret Hahn McEwen; six daughters, Marie M. McEwen of Randallstown, Md., Laura McEwen-Miller of Chambersburg, Ellen M. Tholen of Salt Lake City, Karen M. Newman of Smithsburg, Susan M. Thompson of Hagerstown, Jayne M. Breakall of Atlantic Beach, Fla., and Julia M. Hadley of Carthage, N.Y.; two sisters, Patricia M. Pette of Portland, Ore., and Joan M. Shelton of Walkersville, Md.; and 17 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Mark's Catholic Church, 385 S. Ridge Ave., Greencastle. The Rev. Joseph L. Stahura will officiate. Burial with military graveside honors by Morris Frock American Legion, will be in the Glade Cemetery, Walkersville.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, The Greencastle VFW will hold a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. and the rosary will be recited at 8 p.m.

Grant M. Guthrie
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Grant M. Guthrie, 76, of Caledonia Manor Nursing Home and formerly of 12740 Molly Pitcher Highway, Greencastle, Pa., and of Mercersburg, Pa., died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, at the nursing home.
Born Nov. 10, 1920, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was the son of the late Herbert H. and Theressa E. Morrow Guthrie Sr.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Wava Louise Cutchall Guthrie on July 1, 1983.
He was a graduate of the former Lemasters High School, Lemasters, Pa.
He was employed as a production supervisor by Vertol Boeing Division, Chester, Pa., until his retirement. Prior to that he worked at the former Fairchild Industries, Hagerstown.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II with the 392nd Service Squadron 21st Service Group in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mercersburg.
He was a life member and past Commander of Clarence Armstrong Post 6241 VFW, Mercersburg; member of Frank I. Carbaugh Post 373, American Legion, Greencastle; AARP.
He is survived by his wife, Veronica M. McCall Starliper Guthrie, whom he married June 23, 1988, of Greencastle; two sons, Grant M. Guthrie Jr. of Plano, Texas and Douglas Guthrie of Ocean, N.J.; two stepsons, John "Danny" Starliper of Mercersburg and William "Randy" Starliper of Greencastle; four grandchildren and four step grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert H. Guthrie Jr.
Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Don E. Creager will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
There will be no viewing.

Carl E. Martin
FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Carl E. Martin, 79, of 4654 Carbaugh Road, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, at Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Sept. 1, 1917, in South Mountain, Pa., he was the son of the late Grant A. and Mary A. Null Martin
He was employed as the chief chef by the South Mountain Restoration Center, until his retirement in 1977 after 38 years of service.
He was a member of National Rifle Association; associate member of Fraternal Order of Police, South Mountain; life member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1526, Gettysburg, Pa.; life member of South Mountain Fish and Game Association; life member of South Mountain Volunteer Fire Co.; life member of Mont Alto Volunteer Fire Co. 1; and a member of National AARP.
He is survived by two daughters, Maxine K. Chidboy and Patsy L. Wagaman, both of South Mountain; one son, Dale R. Martin of South Mountain; three sisters, Zellie Miller of South Mountain, Annie Stouffer of Waynesboro, Pa., and Marie Whisner of Hagerstown; three brothers, Harold Martin, Bill Martin, both of Waynesboro, and Charles Martin of Chambersburg; nine grandchildren; thre great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Sue Ellen Chidboy and a number of sisters and brothers.
Services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. The Rev. C. Roy Daywalt will officiate. Burial will be in Strang's Cemetery, South Mountain.

Clara R. Oberholzer
Clara R. "Bobbi" Oberholzer, 77, of Colton Villa Nursing Center, Hagerstown, and formerly of Hagerstown, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, at the nursing home.
Born May 20, 1919, in Worleytown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Elam W. and Clara Isabelle Fraver Oberholzer.
She was employed for over 30 years by the former Reisner's Products, builders of organs, Hagerstown. She also was employed by the former Moller Pipe Organ Co., Hagerstown.
She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Greencastle, Pa.
She is survived by one brother, Clinton Oberholzer of Harlinger, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers and one sister.
Services will be held Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle, Pa. The Rev. Donald M. Bohn will officiate. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Greencastle.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary K. Jenkins
BRADDOCK HEIGHTS, Md. - Mary Katherine Jenkins, 75, of 6012 Jefferson Blvd., Braddock Heights, died Friday, Dec. 20, 1996, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born Dec. 29, 1920, in Middletown, Md., she was the daughter of the late Lloyd and Viola Irving Schroyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon M. Jenkins Jr., in 1995.
She was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one daughter, Ruanna Kutchak of Walkersville, Md.; one son, Robert Jenkins of Hagerstown; one brother, Kenneth Schroyer of Williamsport; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Otterbein United Methodist Church, 918 E. Franklin St., Hagerstown. The Rev. Stephen D. Robison will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Earl P. Kelley
Earl Preston Kelley, 73, of Ravenwood Lutheran Village, Hagerstown, and formerly of Clear Spring, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at the home.
Born Oct. 24, 1923, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late John and Lethia M. Eichelberger Kelley.
He was employed by C&P Telephone Co. After his retirement he owned a private pilot service.
He was a U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force veteran, having served during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He retired as a colonel from the U.S. Air Force.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Clear Spring.
He also was a member of Joseph C. Herbert American Legion Post 222, Clear Spring.
He is survived by one daughter, Cheryl Kelley Jacobs of Baltimore; four sons, Robert M. Kelley of Hagerstown, Douglas J. Kelley of Portland, Ore., David R. Kelley of Orlando, Fla., and Christopher G. Kelley of San Diego; one sister, Jean Jennings; one brother, Harold Kelley of Williamsport; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Mabel Clingan and one brother, Alvin Kelley.
A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Donald E. Thompson Funeral Home, 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. The Rev. David Kaplan will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.

David L. Coffman
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - David Leo "Luther" Coffman, 49, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 1996, at his home.
Born May 17, 1947, in Bloomery, W.Va., he was the son of the late Elmer McKinley and Mary Agnes Caldwell Coffman. He was the stepson of Gilbert Clem of Berkeley Springs.
He attended the Garfield School, Berkeley Springs.
He was employed as a tree trimmer and foreman with Bartlett Tree Experts and Asplundh, retiring on disability.
He attended the Berkeley Springs Church of Christ.
He was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1483, Berkeley Springs. He was a social member of Risinger-Stotler VFW Post 4019, Berkeley Springs.
In addition to his stepfather, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Joann Elizabeth Snow Coffman; two daughters, Lisa Lynn Reed and Brenda Lee Coffman, both of Berkeley Springs; two sisters, Carole Ann Fleece of Berkeley Springs and Eleanor Mildred Yost of Jonestown, Pa.; one brother, George Elmer Coffman of Clear Spring; one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Sunday at 8 p.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Rodney Truax will officiate. Burial will be private.
