James A. Snider

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Rev. James A. Snider, 80, of Menno Haven, and formerly of 163 Maple Ave., Greencastle, Pa., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, at the nursing home.

Born March 3, 1916, in Montgomery Township, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel and Nina Dentler Snider.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Corena B. Atherton Snider in February of 1977.

He was an alumnus of Messiah College, Grantham, Pa., and Huntington College, Huntington, Ind.

He was licensed as a minister of the United Brethren in Christ Church in 1950, retiring from active ministry in 1971. He served eight churches in the Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio conference areas during his ministry. He was the host of the "Neighbor Jim" radio program that aired for several years on WKSL. He operated Snider's Garage in Upton, Pa., for many years. He also worked at the former Western Maryland Railroad and Letterkenney Army Depot, Chambersburg.

He was a member of Macedonia United Brethren in Christ Church, Greencastle.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth S. Bartle Snider, whom he married Jan. 1, 1983; two daughters, Beverly M. Spangler of Greencastle and Cinda J. Smith of Shady Grove, Pa.; one son, Ronald D. Snider of Mercersburg, Pa.; three stepdaughters, Ruby C. Kessinger, Naomi R. Shatzer and Joyce M. Brown, all of Chambersburg; three stepsons, Rodney G. Bartle and Dean C. Bartle, both of Chambersburg, and the Rev. Jaye M. Bartle of Shippensburg, Pa.; two sisters, Jane Fetterhoff of Coseytown, Pa., and Alice L. Hartman of Hagerstown; one brother, Lester "Pink" Snider of St. Thomas, Pa.; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Susan Cosey, Westanna Young and Ruth Snider; and three brothers, Samuel Snider, Franklin Snider and Sibert Snider.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Macedonia United Brethren in Christ Church, 11887 Worleytown Road, Greencastle. The Rev. Gayle L. Ruble Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in Montgomery Brethren in Christ Church Cemetery, near Upton.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harold M. Zimmerman and Son Funeral Home, 45 S. Carlisle St., Greencastle and at the church one hour prior to the service on Sunday.

William M. Chaney

WILLIAMSPORT - William Marion Chaney, 98, of 252 Otho Holland Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 9, 1898, in Clear Spring, he was the son of the late Charles Marion and Barbara Crilley Chaney.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beulah Elizabeth Nave Chaney in 1949, and by his second wife, Julia Ann Fischer Chaney in 1982.

He was employed as a machine operator by W.D. Byron Tannery, retiring in 1963. He was a custodian at Williamsport United Methodist Church for more than 17 years.

He was a member of Williamsport Church of God.

He is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Marie Jones of Camp Hill, Pa., and Sydney Elmira Appenzeller of Hagerstown; five stepdaughters, Ruth Waters and Esther Myers, both of Williamsport, Isabelle Miller of Topping, Va., Mary Huff of Huntington Valley, Pa., and Naomi Pfeltz of Hartfield, Va.; three stepsons, William Fischer of Hagerstown, George Fischer of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Charles Fischer of Williamsport; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; step-grandchildren; stepgreat-grandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport. The Rev. Robert E. Timmons and the Rev. Richard A. Kroll will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park, Williamsport.

The funeral home will be open Monday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Lloyd A. Eby

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Lloyd A. Eby, 76, a resident of Menno Haven and formerly of 4082 Burkholder Road, Chambersburg, died Thursday, Dec. 26, 1996, at the home.

Born Dec. 19, 1920, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late Ira Eby and Lydia Lehman Eby.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leona Martin Eby, who died in January 1996.

He was a member of Chambersburg Mennonite Church in Chambersburg, was an adult Sunday school teacher for 40 years, and was a song leader.

A farmer, he retired in 1972. After his retirement he was a salesman for Paul M. Byers Farm Machinery for 15 years.

He is survived by three daughters, Miriam E. Jones of Carrollton, Ga., Alta M. Lawyer, of Harrisonburg, Va., and Evelyn Martin of Maugansville; three sons, Lloyd M. Eby of Cheverly, Md., James M. Eby of Chambersburg, and Nelson M. Eby of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two sisters Louise F. Martin of Hagerstown and Dorothy A. Martin of Flintstone, Md.; five brothers, David L. Eby of Chambersburg, Harold L. Eby of Clearville, Pa., Wayne A. Eby of Flintstone, Glen I. Eby of Manchester, Ky., and J. Elden Eby of Chambersburg; and seven grandchildren.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Chambersburg Mennonite Church, Chambersburg. The Rev. Preston M. Frey and the Rev. Jerry Traister will officiate. Burial will be in Chambersburg Mennonite Cemetery, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Franklin Mennonite Conference Center, 4856 Molly Pitcher Highway, Chambersburg, Pa. 17201, c/o Mission work in Guatemala.

Daisy V. Churchey

Daisy Virginia Churchey, 83, of Colton Villa Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of 47 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, at the nursing home.

Born Jan. 5, 1913, in Sharpsburg, she was the daughter of the late George L. and Katie I. Welch Eichelberger.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen M. Churchey, in 1971.

She was employed as a cook by Woodpoint Grill for more than 20 years.

She was a member of Hagerstown Bible Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Consuelo I. "Sue" Clark of Laurel, Md.; two sons, Wayne Churchey of Cincinnati and Jack Churchey of Huntsville, Ala.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mountainview Cemetery, Sharpsburg. The Rev. Dale R. Carver will officiate.

There will be no viewing, but the family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

John A. McDougal

McCONNELLSBURG, Pa. - John A. McDougal, 82, of 315 Cooper Lane, and a resident of Shook Home in Chambersburg, Pa., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, at Shook Home.

Born Sept. 24, 1914, in Fairmont, W.Va., he was the son of the late Samuel C. and Nellie Elizabeth Johnson McDougal.

His wife, Mary Jane Murphy McDougal, died in 1989.

He was a retired pipe fitter with Fruit Growers Express in Alexandria, Va.

He was a member of McConnellsburg Baptist Chapel, McConnellsburg.

He is survived by one daughter, Patricia Smith of McConnellsburg; one brother, Willis McDougal of Chandler, Okla.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jack W. McDougal; and one brother, Leo E. McDougal.

Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Woodsdale Cemetery in Grafton, W.Va. The Rev. William LaWall will officiate.

Friends may call at Davis Funeral Home in Grafton on Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Local arrangements are by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, 322 N. Second St., McConnellsburg.

Hazel L. Gordon Gray

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Hazel Lucille Gordon Unger Messner Gray, 67, of Berkeley Springs, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, as a result of an automobile accident in Morgan County, W.Va.

The accident also claimed the life of her husband, Archie Junior Gray.

Born Jan. 18, 1929, in Hancock, she was the daughter of the late George and Lydia Bell Weller Gordon.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hammond Unger, in 1970, and by her second husband, Sanford C. Messner, in 1990.

She attended Hancock High School.

She attended Independent Church of God, in Hedgesville, W.Va.

She had been employed as a seamstress at Stanley Co. in Chambersburg, Pa., and was a homemaker.

She is survived by three stepdaughters, Leanna Gray Vest of San Diego, Calif., Deborah M. Davis of Albuquerque, N.M., and Dorothy V. Martin of Goose Creek, S.C.; one stepson, Anthony M. Gray of Deale, Md.; six step-grandchildren; and one aunt.

Services will be held Monday, at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 306 Union St., Berkeley Springs. The Rev. Hennis H. Fox will officiate. Burial will be in Duckwall Church of Christ Cemetery, Morgan County, W.Va.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

The funeral home will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Independent Church of God, Route 2, Box 435, Berkeley Springs, W.Va. 25411.

William F. Brazz

William Frank Brazz, 76, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 1996, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Feb. 27, 1920, in Coaldale, Pa., he was the son of the late Peter and Elizabeth Rolinitus Brazz.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Peterson Brazz, in 1994.

He retired from the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Co., Newark, N.J.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

He was of the Catholic faith.

He was a member of the Teamsters Local, Newark; American Legion Post 42; VFW 1936 and the Redmans Club, all of Hagerstown.

He is survived by one daughter, Dr. Sherry Brazz Tomasino of Hyattsville, Md.; one son, William P. Brazz of West Bloomfield, Mich.; and two granddaughters, Emily Brazz and Molly Brazz.

Services were held today at 1 p.m. at George-Upchurch Funeral Home, 202 Greene St., Cumberland, Md. Chaplain Charles Griffith officiated. Burial, with military honors by local veterans organizations, were in MSVC, Rocky Gap.

Dwight T. Hallowell

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Dwight T. Hallowell, 65, of 2479 Newcomer Road, Chambersburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 1996, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.

Born Feb. 20, 1931, in McCanle, Va., he was the son of the late Joseph and Irene Lonas Anderson.

He served as a Petty Officer 1st Class in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era.

Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked at Teledyne-Landis in Waynesboro, retiring in 1995.

He was of the Episcopal faith.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey Snyder Hallowell; two stepdaughters, Sharon Plasterer of Roxbury, Pa., and Debra Kaminski of Pittsburgh; one stepson, Michael S. Taylor of Alvaton, Ky.; one brother, William Parkinson of Phoenix; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, J. Wyman and Josephine Deacon Hallowell.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, at 2 p.m. at Beaver Creek Cemetery in Washington County, Md. The Rev. S. Dwight Morgan will officiate.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 225 E. King St., Chambersburg, Pa. 17201.
