James F. Messersmith
FREDERICK, Md. - James Franklin Messersmith, 87, of Citizens Nursing Home, and formerly of East Second Street and Brooklawn Apartments, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 2, 1909, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late James W. and Carrie Shaw Messersmith.
He was a graduate of the Surry School and Columbia Business College, Hagerstown.
He had been employed by the advertising department of the Herald-Mail Co., Hagerstown and the Potomac Edison Co., and was a ticket agent for Blue Ridge Bus Lines. He also owned and operated a camera shop on North Market Street, Frederick. He was appointed to the Board of Election Supervisors as elections administrator. In 1979, he was presented a Governor's Citation for his 16 years as administrator and his presidency of the Maryland Association of Election Officials.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine during World War II. He was in the invasion of Normandy, and served in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean and the Pacific theaters.
He was one of the nine original members of the Hagerstown Polo Players, whose games were held on Sundays at Byron Field, Williamsport. He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42, American Legion, Hagerstown; past member and president of the Frederick Kiwanis; a past member of the Cotillion Club of Frederick; and of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Radcliffe Messersmith; three sisters, Luella Washabaugh of Pittsburgh, Mary Bear of Sun City West, Ariz., and Virginia M. Strine of Hagerstown; nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Gladys H. Weedon.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Joshua R. Messersmith and Howard E. Messersmith.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick. The Rev. Charles Beekley will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hagerstown.
The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

Arthur S. Bramble
Arthur Stanley Bramble, 82, of 11 W. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born June 7, 1914, in Cumberland, Md., he was the son of the late Luther Soloman and Hattie Wadsworth Bramble.
He was employed by the Cumberland Evening Times.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He was a member of the Teamsters.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Belle Bramble; three daughters, Imogene Shank of Hagerstown, Karen Reyes of Pearce, Ariz., and Betty Ann King of Cochise, Ariz.; one sister, Lilliam Fairall of Cumberland; one brother, Hubert Bramble of Cumberland; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mary Belle Bramble.
Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.

F. Sydney Cushwa
F. Sydney Cushwa, 94, of 1158 Luther Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 1996, at his home.
Born Jan. 30, 1902, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Victor M. and Susan Fechtig Cushwa.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hagerstown.
He is survived by one sister, Sarah J. Lyon of Hagerstown; and nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 224 W. Washington St., Hagerstown. The Rev. George Limmer was celebrant. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
Mabel R. M. Martin
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Mabel R. Martin Martin, 84, of Menno Haven Nursing Home, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at the home.
Born June 18, 1912, in Shippensburg, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Calvin and Alice Martin Martin. She lived in the Pinola, Pa., area and the Cearfoss area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond H. Martin, on Sept. 4, 1996. They were married on Nov. 16, 1933.
She was a member of Mt. Olive Mennonite Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Ruth E. Eby and Alice K. Martin, both of Hagerstown; five sons, Nevin L. Martin of State Line, Pa., Lee E. Martin and Merle W. Martin, both of Greencastle, Pa., R. Larry Martin of Waynesboro, Pa., and Duane A. Martin of Hagerstown; one sister, Alice M. Hurst of Chambersburg; two brothers, Raymond C. Martin of Shippensburg and Gilmer L. Martin of Chambersburg; 27 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Chester Martin, on Nov. 25, 1974.
Services will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Mt. Olive Mennonite Church with Bishop Glenn Martin and Minister Ira Martin officiating. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Minnich-Miller-May Funeral Home, 521 S. Washington St., Greencastle, Pa., and one hour prior to the services in the church on Saturday.

Howell C. Happ Jr.
BRADDOCK HEIGHTS, Md. - Howell C. Happ Jr., 58, of Ridge Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at his home.
Born March 25, 1938, in Beaumont, Texas, he was the son of the late Howell and Marjorie Watt Happ.
He was a real estate broker, appraiser and property manager.
He served as president and director of the Frederick County Association of Realtors and helped establish the Frederick County Multiple Listing Service.
He served as president of the Braddock Heights Optimist Club and served several terms as treasurer of the Braddock Heights Community Association during the time when the association purchased and operated the community pool. He was instrumental in establishing the Property Owners Association of Greater Frederick Inc.
He was active in local politics; was a coin collector; and enjoyed relic hunting, fishing and horticulture.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shirley Louise Baker Happ; two sons, Howell C. Happ III and Daryl Scott Baker Happ, both of Braddock Heights; two sisters, Jean Happ Hudson of Rockville, Md., and Mary Elizabeth Warshowsky of Indialantic, Fla.; one brother, John Waller Happ of Winchester, Va.; one granddaughter; two aunts; one uncle; seven cousins; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday at noon at Etchison Memorial Chapel of Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church St., Frederick, Md. The Rev. Ginger G. Memmott will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick.

Richard B. Snowden Sr.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Richard Beall Snowden Sr., 70, of Martinsburg, and formerly of Takoma Park, Md., and Boynton Beach, Fla., died Thursday, Jan. 2, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg.
Born in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Vincent and Mayme Beall Hudson Snowden.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Margaret Kees Snowden.
He was an upholsterer by trade, which culminated in the family business.
He served during World War II in Europe and the Pacific.
He is survived by three sons, Richard B. Snowden Jr. of Harpers Ferry, W.Va., Douglas S. Snowden of Falling Waters, W.Va., and Stephen C. Snowden of Martinsburg; three sisters, Dorothy Catanzaro of Ramona, Calif., Betty Pritchard of Aberdeen, Md., and June Bishop of Fruitland Park, Fla.; four grandchildren; and his companion, Millie Dunmire.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Snowden and Mary Jane Toms; and one brother, Shull V. Snowden.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Falling Waters Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Spring Mills. The Rev. David E. Byers and the Rev. James D. Riley Jr. will officiate.

Eileen F. Zimmermann
Eileen Frances Zimmermann, 66, of 17632 York Road, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Oct. 12, 1930, at North Arlington, N.J., she was the daughter of the late John and Ellen Gallagher McHugh.
She was employed with Manpower, and was previously employed by Allstate Insurance and Bancker Construction in Long Island, N.Y.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hagerstown.
She is survived by her husband, Armand F. Zimmermann; four daughters, Ellen Jane Gercke of Hagerstown, Patricia Anne Loverro of Oregon, Mary Therase Sharp of Las Vegas, and Karen Beth Jaye of Smithsburg; three sisters, Anne Lehneis of Doylestown, Pa., Evelyn Downs of Brookville, Fla., and Mary Hanson of Ashland, Wis.; one brother, James McHugh of Chicago; and nine grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 17630 Virginia Ave., Hagerstown, with the Rev. George A. Limmer, as celebrant. Entombment will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.

Henrietta S. Mauck
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Henrietta S. Mauck, 81, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 1997, at City Hospital.
Born April 11, 1915, in Luray, Va., she was the daughter of the late Isaac Elmer and Cora Alice Rothgeb Mauck.
She was a seasonal employee at C.H. Musselman Co. and a member of Vanville Church of Christ.
She lived with the Port and Edith Chapman family in Bunker Hill, W.Va., for more than 40 years.
She is survived by three sisters, Margaret Dinges of Charles Town, W.Va., Lorine Fellers and Dora Batt, both of Martinsburg; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Dinges, Catherine Price and Louise Seekford; and four brothers, David Mauck, Philip Mauck, Warren Mauck and Earl Mauck.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Thomas Huff will officiate. Burial will be in Leaksville United Christian Church Cemetery in Leaksville, Va.
