Esther S. Smith
RIDGEWAY, W.Va. - Esther Swartz Smith, 90, of Ridgeway, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1996, at Heartland Nursing Home, Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born June 11, 1906, in Frederick County, Va., she was the daughter of the late George W. and Elizabeth E. Athey Swartz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Smith, in 1979.
She was a retired sales clerk with Leggett Department Stores. She previously had worked at the Dunn Woolen Mills until it closed.
She was a member of Paynes Chapel United Methodist Church in Ridgeway, where she taught the children's Sunday school class for 50 years.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, including Ruby Swartz Kern, with whom she lived for a number of years; and two great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by six sisters, Bessie, Ada, Clara, Rena, Grace and Helen; and six brothers, George Swartz, Raymond Swartz, Ashby Swartz, John Swartz, Howard Swartz and Russell Swartz.
Services will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, 327 W. King St., Martinsburg. The Rev. Patricia Drake will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Va.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

May N. Keith
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - May N. Keith, 79, of 878 Lincoln Way West, Chambersburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 1996, at her home.
Born Aug. 24, 1917, in Hamilton Township, Pa., she was the daugher of the late John W. and Mary Lovett Norman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clay R. Keith, in 1984.
She was a graduate of Chambersburg High School and a 1944 graduate of Lincoln School for Nurses in New York City, N.Y.
She was a member of John Wesley AME Zion Church in Chambersburg, where she served as secretary of Sunday school, was a financial secretary of quarterly conference, and as treasurer of general claims.
She is survived by two sons, Alan N. Keith of Chambersburg, and Gary L. Keith of Mercersburg, Pa.; two sisters, Helen I. Thompson and Ella Francis Marshall, both of Chambersburg; one brother, Isaac H. Norman of Chambersburg; one granddaughter; two step-grandchildren; one great-step-grandson; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers.
Services will be held Saturday, at 10:30 a.m. at the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Felix K. Ofosu will officiate. Burial will be in Lebanon Cemetery in Chambersburg.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Harry D. Bock Sr.
FAIRFIELD, Pa. - Harry D. "Sonny" Bock Sr., 62, of 1300 Old Waynesboro Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1996, of heart failure, in the emergency room of Gettysburg Hospital, Gettysburg, Pa.
Born Dec. 24, 1933, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of Naomi J. Gantz Bock, a resident of Franklin County Nursing Home, Chambersburg, Pa., and the late Samuel D. Bock. He was a lifelong resident of Waynesboro and Fairfield.
He delivered newspapers for The Herald-Mail, Hagerstown, for a number of years and then The Record Herald, Waynesboro, for 15 years. He last delivered for The Morning Herald, Hagerstown. He also sold fruit in Blue Ridge Summit, Pa., and Rouzerville, Pa., for a number of years.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Dorothy M. Hahn Bock, whom he married on Dec. 7, 1962; two daughters, Tina M. Lease of Fairfield and Nancy J. Wagaman of Blue Ridge Summit; one son, Harry D. Bock Jr. of Fairfield; one sister, Connie Emory of York, Pa.; one granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Isabel Redding and Frances Trzcinski.
Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Eugene M. Cline will officiate. Burial will be in Fountaindale Union Cemetery, near Fairfield.

Lester D. Shilling
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Lester D. Shilling, 92, of Jacksonville, died Friday, Nov. 22, 1996.
He was born Aug. 27, 1904, near Hagerstown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Shilling.
He retired from the federal government as an Internal Revenue Service agent after 30 years of service.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served as a caisson soldier.
He retired to South Daytona, Fla., where he was active in the Lutheran church, Meals on Wheels and served as treasurer for the NARFE.
He is survived by one daughter, Katherine J. Sheaffer of Jacksonville; one sister, Catherine Bowman of Boonsboro; two grandsons, Todd E. Sheaffer of Inman, S.C., and Thomas D. Sheaffer of Jacksonville; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Hardage-Giddens Mandarin Funeral Home, 11801 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville. The Rev. George Johnson will officiate.
Naomi M.K.D. Jackman
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Naomi Matilda Kalmbacher Duerr Jackman, 96, formerly of Mill Hall, Pa., and Howard, Pa., died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1996, at Susque-View Home, Lock Haven.
Born Aug. 16, 1900, in Marion, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late George and Emma Kalmbacher. She was adopted by her uncle and aunt, Gottlieb and Katherine Duerr.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lester Jackman, in 1933.
She was a 1920 graduate of Loganton High School, Loganton, Pa.
She was a practical nurse for many years.
She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church of Howard.
She enjoyed reading, listening to music and writing letters.
She is survived by one daughter, Madelyn Oakes of Mill Hall; two sons, Robert E. Jackman of Mill Hall and Lowell B. Jackman of Smithsburg; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard L. Jackman and Charles I. Jackman.
Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at W. Robert Neff Funeral Home, Main Street, Howard. The Rev. Steven Atanasoff will officiate. Burial will be in Greenburr Cemetery, Greenburr, Pa.
Visitation will be at the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Donald R. Edmonds Sr.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Donald Ray Edmonds Sr., 74, of Martinsburg, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1996, at the home of his daughter.
Born Feb. 13, 1922, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Raymond H. and Domain P. Edmonds.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Martin Edmonds, in 1978.
He was a retired senior vice president from Old National Bank with more than 30 years of service. After his retirement, he did estate appraisals.
He was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church.
He was a member and past exalted ruler of BPO Elks 778; Moose 120; VFW Post 896; and American Legion Post 14.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Holliday Edmonds; one daughter, Cindy Benavides of Berkeley County, W.Va.; one son, Donald R. Edmonds Jr. of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; one sister, Adaliene Gregory; two brothers, Kenneth Edmonds of Lewes, Del., and the Rev. Raymond Edmonds Jr. of Virginia; and two grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Rosedale Funeral Chapel, 20260 Rosedale Road, Martinsburg. The Rev. Raymond Edmonds Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg.

Chlorus M. Merchant
BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Chlorus Marie Merchant, 68, of Berkeley Springs, died Thursday, Nov. 28, 1996, at Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs.
Born Oct. 12, 1928, in Morgan County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Guy Raymond and Sarah Beatrice Palmer Yost.
She attended Mt. Garfield School, Berkeley Springs.
During the early 1960s, she was employed by Vanguard Products, Berkeley Springs; Schoenman's Sewing Factory, Winchester, Va., and was a cook at Valley View Nursing Home. She and her husband owned and operated Merchant's Gulf Service Station in Berkeley Springs from 1968 to 1979. She last worked at National Fruit Co., Winchester, and retired in 1989 due to illness.
She attended Word of Deliverance Church, Berkeley Springs.
She is survived by her husband, Willie Sylvester "Bill" Merchant; one daughter, Helen J. Soper of Berkeley Springs; one son, Raymond "Buddy" Merchant of Berkeley Springs; four sisters, Naomi I. Newman of Needmore, Pa., Wenita V. Snyder of Lakeland, Fla., Phyllis E. Kyne of Martinsburg, W.Va., and S. Darlene Vessella of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; three brothers, Charles W. Yost and George A. Yost, both of Berkeley Springs, and L. Edward Yost of Needmore; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one son, Roger Lee Yost; and four brothers, Raymond G. Yost, Layton R. Yost, L. Webster Yost and Joseph E. Yost.
Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, Stotlers Crossroads, W.Va. Pastor Jack Hiles and Pastor Shirley Hiles will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Donna P.P. Stottlemyer
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Donna P. Pryor Stottlemyer, 48, of 9 Briarcliff Drive, died Tuesday, Nov. 26, 1996, at her home.
Born Aug. 29, 1948, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of Bette L. Blubaugh Pryor Mann of Waynesboro and the late Donald R. Pryor. She lived her early life in Waynesboro.
She was a 1966 graduate of Waynesboro High School. She was a 1969 graduate of Shippensburg University with a bachelor of science degree in education with two majors in history/social studies and English literature. She then attended Penn State Mont Alto Campus and Wilson College, Chambersburg, Pa., and was certified in English as a second language.
She taught history in the Waynesboro School District and she then was a substitute teacher in the Chambersburg School District. She then taught various courses at Cumberland Valley Christian Academy in Chambersburg. Her last place of employment was Mercersburg schools, teaching English as a second language.
She was a member of MADRE of New York.
She enjoyed cooking, collecting cook books, reading and watching all types of films.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Gerald L. Stottlemyer, whom she married on June 10, 1967; one son, Trevor P. Stottlemyer of Shippensburg; and one stepbrother, John R. Mann of York, Pa.
She was preceded in death by her stepfather, J. Russell Mann; and one half-brother, Robert D. Pryor.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor Brent K. Driver and Pastor Eugene M. Cline will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
There will be no public viewing; however, the family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
Neva N. Jones
FORT LOUDON, Pa. - Neva N. Jones, 95, of 5888 Path Valley Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1996, at Manor Care Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa.
Born Aug. 21, 1901, in Willow Hill, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Stephen and Lydia Stinger Neil.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence I. Jones, in 1965.
She was a graduate of the former Dry Run High School, Dry Run, Pa.
She was a life long member of Carrick United Methodist Church, Metal Township, Franklin County, Pa. She was a member of Ladies Aid Society of the church.
She is survived by five daughters, Anna J. Kremp, Elaine M. Eckels and Carolyn Reeder, all of Fort Loudon, Janet E. Shoop and Jeanne J. Shives, both of Chambersburg; one son, Donald N. Jones of Chambersburg; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sons, one brother and one great-grandson.
Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Carrick United Methodist Church, Metal Township. The Rev. Gail Mogel Tillotson and the Rev. Bill M. Tillotson will officiate. Burial will be in Carrick United Methodist Church Cemetery, Metal Township.
Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service Saturday.

QUINCY, Pa. - Luena H. Stymiest Staley, 85, a resident of Quincy United Methodist Home, and formerly of Penn National Estate, Fayetteville, Pa., died Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1996, at Waynesboro Hospital, Waynesboro, Pa.
Born Jan. 6, 1911, in Mont Alto, Pa., she was the daughter of the late James Albert and Alberta Miley Stymiest. She lived her early life in Mont Alto.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul E. Staley. They were married in February 1930.
She was a 1929 graduate of Quincy High School.
She lived in Baltimore, Orlando, Fla., and Waynesboro.
She was a member of Pine Castle United Methodist Church in Orlando and Otterbein United Methodist Church in Mont Alto.
She did volunteer work at Orlando hospitals and Quincy United Methodist Home.
She is survived by one daughter, Donna L. Geatches of Falls Church, Va.; one son, Paul A. Staley of Fayetteville; four sisters, Delma Stymiest and Beatrice Stymiest, both of Mont Alto, Eunice Shirey of Valley Forge, Pa., and Amelita Koller of Fayetteville; one brother, Staat "Tally" Stymiest of Mont Alto; six grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Queba Ott; and two brothers, James Stymiest and George Stymiest.
Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro. Pastor James C. House will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.
