H. Bryce Hopkins
MIDDLETOWN, Md. - H. Bryce Hopkins, 80, of 4499 Tulip Tree Lane, died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, Frederick, Md.
Born Jan. 27, 1916, in Seven Mile Ford, Va., he was the son of the late James Edward and Nannie Hopkins Hopkins.
He served with the Farmers Home Administration as county supervisor for Frederick and Washington counties, retiring in 1976.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater.
He participated in the battle of Ramagen. He was then promoted to the rank of major and served as company commander of the 797th Engineers Reserve Unit, U.S. Army.
He was a member of Frederick Presbyterian Church.
He also was a member of Loyal Order of Moose 371, Francis Scott Key Post 11 American Legion, both in Frederick; and the 86th Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Simmons Hopkins, whom he married May 17, 1941; two daughters, Patricia H. Ashton of Frederick and Dorothy L. Hopkins-Lippy of Fairfield, Pa.; one son, Richard Bryce Hopkins of Centreville, Va.; one sister, Eula H. James of Elizabeth, Colo.; two brothers, H. Palmer Hopkins of Beltsville, Md., and Archie B. Hopkins of Bel Air, Md.; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Frederick.
Those attending are asked to assemble at the chapel in Mount Olivet Cemetery at 10:45 a.m.
The family will receive friends at Robert E. Dailey and Son Funeral Home, 1201 N. Market St., Frederick, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 1 to 9 p.m.

Josephine B. Sorensen
SILVER SPRING, Md. - Josephine B. "Jo" Sorensen, 79, of Silver Spring, and formerly of Westbury, Long Island, N.Y., died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney, Md.
Born in Westbury, Long Island, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Barbara Bernhardt.
She was a homemaker.
She enjoyed cooking and sewing.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Roland O. Sorensen Sr.; one son, Roland O. Sorensen Jr. of Hagerstown; two sisters, Hanna Twombly of Barre, Vt., and Catherine Weiss of Port Orange, Fla.; two grandsons; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Viola Bernhardt, Mimi Bernhardt, and Frannie Bernhardt; and one brother, Arnold Bernhardt.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Leisure World, 15661 Norbeck Blvd., Silver Spring.
Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Park in Rockville, Md.

Calvin P. Pierce
INWOOD, W.Va. - Calvin Paul Pierce, 79, of Route 2, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Jan. 25, 1917, in Jefferson County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Edward and Molly Swartz Pierce.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army.
He was a member of Middleway United Methodist Church and the Men's Sunday School Class.
He is survived by his wife, Reva Shackelford Pierce, of Canterbury Nursing Home; one daughter, Diane E. Everhart; one son, Edward L. Pierce of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; one sister, Alda Johnson of Middleway, W.Va.; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg.
The Rev. Charles L. Frum will officiate.
Burial will be in Rest Cemetery in Frederick County, Va., with military graveside services conducted by Newton D. Baker Post 896 Veterans of Foreign Wars and Berkeley Post 14 American Legion.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m.
Raymond R. Diffendal
SPRING HILL, Fla. - Raymond Robert Diffendal, 76, of Spring Hill, and formerly of Smithsburg, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 1997, at his home.
Born in Smithsburg, he moved to Spring Hill 13 years ago.
He was a retired truck driver from Mack Trucks.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps.
He was a survivor of Pearl Harbor.
He was of the Protestant faith.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10209; American Legion; and Pearl Harbor Survivors Membership Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Diffendal; one daughter, Judy Donaghue-Staubs of Spring Hill; two sons, Ray Diffendal Jr. and Joe Diffendal, both of Spring Hill; and two grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Brewer Memorial Funeral Homes and Crematory, 280 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill.
Lester F. Jacot
Lester F. Jacot, 90, of 229 Rockwillow Ave., Hagerstown, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 15, 1906, in Plainfield, N.J., he was the son of the late Joseph and Catherine Block Jacot.
His first wife, Helen E. Jacot, died in 1972.
He was employed by Mack Trucks for 32 years, retiring in 1971.
He was a member of Hagerstown Bible Church and the Adult Sunday School Class.
He served as an usher for many years.
He was a member of United Auto Workers 171.
He is survived by his wife, June Huffman Jacot; one daughter, Helen F. Stull of Hagerstown; one sister, Angela Karpinski of Bound Brook, N.J.; one brother, Joseph Jacot Jr. of Piscataway, N.J.; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.
The Rev. Dale R. Carver and the Rev. Gerald D. Carbaugh will officiate.
Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery.

Charles L. Schill Sr.
MYERSVILLE, Md. - Charles L. Schill Sr., 58, of Scravel Road, died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Jan. 16, 1938, in Frederick, Md., he was the son of the late Charles E. and Rosaline Masser Schill.
He previously was employed as a truck driver for Meadows Van and Storage in Frederick and Red Ball Moving Co. in Hagerstown, and retired from D.M. Bowman Trucking in Hagerstown.
He was an avid hunter.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Metzer Schill; two daughters, Charlotte Lucas and Kimberly Delp, both of Hagerstown; one son, Charles L. Schill Jr. of Clear Spring; one sister, Rosie Garrison of Frederick; one brother, Joseph Schill of Middletown; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Ricketts Funeral Home, 504 Main St., Myersville.
The Rev. Alan Greijack and the Rev. Dale Cosden will officiate.
Burial will be in Pleasant Walk United Methodist Cemetery in Myersville.

Glen E. Robertson
RICHMOND, Va. - Retired U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Glen Edward Robertson, 68, of Richmond, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann Robertson; one sister, Hazel Stonebraker of Hagerstown; one brother, Ronald Robertson of Jamestown, N.Y.; four nieces; and three nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery.

Florence I. Manahan
Florence Irene Manahan, 88, of 624 Antietam St., Hagerstown, died Monday, Jan. 13, 1997, at Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport.
Born Nov. 8, 1908, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Emma Shirley Semler.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Teddy Manahan, in 1982.
She was of the Protestant faith.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary Jane Manahan of Maugansville, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.
Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no viewing.
The family requests the omission of flowers.
