Thomas C. H. Webster

ST. THOMAS, Pa. - Thomas C. H. Webster, 63, of 2685 McDowell Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, at his home.

Born Oct. 20, 1933, in Loda, Ill., he was the son of the late Col. Chauncey W. and Eleanor Litschaucer Webster.

He was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy, Mercersburg, Pa., and Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.

He began his career with the federal government in the 1960s.

He was assistant director of the National Parks Association, Washington, D.C.

He later served as director of Governor's Council of Natural Resources.

His last appointment was as U.S. Commissioner of Susquehanna River Basin.

He served under the Nixon, Ford, and Carter administrations, retiring in 1977.

He was a known sportsman and breeder of improved livestock. \While operating Meadow Springs Farms of St. Thomas, he was a leader in purebred Gurnsey cattle.

Recently, as operator of Idle Hour Stud, also of St. Thomas, he was recognized as the largest breeder of Cleveland Bay horses in North America.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served as first lieutenant during the Korean War.

He was a member of Detrich-Brechbill American Legion Post 612, St. Thomas; was on the board of directors of the Pennsylvania National Horse Show and the Virginia Horse Center Foundation since its inception; was first vice president of the Cleveland Bay Horse Society of North America; field master of the Antietam Hunt in West Virginia; a member of Beauford Hunt, Harrisburg, Pa., and Plum Run Hunt of Gettysburg, Pa.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married Jan. 3, 1970, Marilyn Raynal Webster; two daughters, Julie Barclay of Nethen, Belgium, and Virginia F.R. Webster of New York, N.Y.; two sons, John Hunter Webster IV and Chauncey W. Webster III, both of St. Thomas; three sisters, Rosanna Jaffin of Princeton, N.J., Lora Groton of Atlanta and Eleanor Winsor of Ardmore, Pa.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Mercersburg. The Rev. William H. Harter will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to the Cleveland Bay Horse Society of North American, P.O. Box 221, South Windham, Conn. 06266, or the Virginia Horse Center Foundation Center, Lexington, Va. 24450.

Arrangements are by Lininger-Fries Funeral Home, Mercersburg.

George W. Osterman

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - George W. "Bill" Osterman, 77, of 184 S. Eighth St., died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, at Chambersburg Hospital.

Born April 27, 1919, in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late George A. and Anna Dick Osterman.

He was preceded in death by his second wife, Vera L. Conway Osterman, on Aug. 9, 1986.

They were married on Nov. 10, 1971.

He was a 1937 graduate of Chambersburg High School.

He was educated in military logistics, management, financial and defense advanced inventory management and U.S. Army project management.

He was employed by Chambersburg Engineering Co. from 1940 to 1949; the former U.S. Naval Supply Depot, Mechanicsburg, Pa., from 1949 to 1954; Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, as a supply requirements and distribution officer from 1954 to 1963; U.S. Army, Japan, 1963 to 1969, as a U.S. Army supply management representative; Weapons Command Rock Island (Ill.) Arsenal, from 1969 to 1971.

He was employed at Army Material Command, Alexandria, Va., from 1971 until retiring in 1974 as the supervisor general supply specialist.

He retired to Aledo, Ill., in 1974 and moved to Chambersburg in 1986.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II in Italy, France, and with Company E, 309th Infantry Regiment, 78th Division in Germany.

He crossed the Remagen Bridge in Germany just before it was bombed.

He received the Purple Heart; Combat Infantry Badge; Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal; European Theater Service Medal with three Bronze Stars; World War II Victory Medal and a European Theater Occupation Medal.

He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Chambersburg.

He also was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1426, Chambersburg, and achieved the Third Degree; life member of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Chambersburg, and the Post honor guard; a life member of Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion; BPO Elks Lodge 600; Marine Corps League; Loyal Order of Moose, 842; Hume-McNeal-Byers AMVETS Post 224; charter member of Tarquino-Washabaugh Catholic War Veterans Post 1930, all of Chambersburg.

From 1946 to 1966 he served in various posts including scoutmaster and committeeman, with Boy Scouts of America Troop 126, Chambersburg.

He is survived by his wife, Lois A. Osterman, whom he married July 8, 1989; two daughters, Claire L. Vandersnick of Horicon, Wis., and Susan E. Pabalate of Hampton, Va.; one son, Thomas W. Osterman of Columbia, Md.; one stepdaughter, Virginia A. Ehrhart of York, Pa.; two stepsons, Gary E. Yohe of Roanoke, Va., and Kevin M. Yohe of Philadelphia; one brother, Paul E. Osterman of Chambersburg; six grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and his former wife, A. Lorraine Pechart of Shippensburg, Pa., whom he married on June 24, 1939.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Catherine E. Lemaster; and two brothers, Charles A. "Shorty" Osterman and Joseph A. Osterman.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.

Monsignor Thomas R. Brenner will officiate.

Burial, with military graveside services conducted by members of Charles M. Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, will be in the church cemetery.

Friends may call today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Paul A. Cosgrove Sr.

FAIRPLAY - Paul Allen Cosgrove Sr., 59, of 17348 Spielman Road, who died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 1997, is survived by a son, Paul Cosgrove Jr. of Fairplay, and a sister, Dorothy May Fishack of Hagestown.

Louise B. Martin

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Louise B. Martin, 89, a resident of Valley View Nursing Home, Berkeley Springs, and formerly of Warfordsburg, Pa., died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, at the home.

Born May 14, 1907, in Swissvale, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Dora Bowers Martin.

She was a graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, the Pratt Institute of New York, and the American Restaurant Institute in Chicago.

She taught public schools in Brownsville and Braddock, Pa., and retired after 35 years of service with Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. as a dietitian in the industrial feeding facility, in Newark, N.J.

She also worked with the American Red Cross during World War II.

She was a member of the Altrussa International Club, and a member of the Business and Professional Womens Club.

She was of the Protestant faith.

She is survived by two nieces, Carol Comerer of Clarksville, Md., and Iris Hendershot of Warfordsburg, Pa.; and one nephew, Paul Martin of St. Thomas, Pa.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold Martin.

Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock.

The Rev William Mielke will officiate.

Burial will be in Mays Chapel Christian Cemetery in Warfordsburg.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary R. Shupp

HANCOCK - Mary R. Shupp, 78, of Hancock, and formerly of Big Pool, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.

Born Oct. 23, 1918, in Pecktonville, she was the daughter of the late Neven and Alice Pearl Hull McCarty.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer LeRoy Shupp, who died Feb. 23, 1995.

She was a member of Parkhead United Methodist Church, and a member of the Parkhead Ladies Aid.

She is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Reed of Hancock, with whom she resided; one son, LeRoy Shupp Jr. of Hancock; two sisters, Daisy Hart and Esther Shupp, both of Big Pool; one brother, Roy McCarthy of Hancock; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers and one granddaughter.

Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock.

The Rev. Robert E. Timmons will officiate.

Burial will be in Parkhead Cemetery, Big Pool.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gladys I. Barrett

ARDEN, W.Va. - Gladys Irene Barrett, 83, of Arden, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, at City Hospital, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born Dec. 29, 1913, in Berkeley County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Theodore Burton and Lilly Mae Barrett Miller.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank T. Barrett.

She was a seasonal employee of the C. H. Musselman Co.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Lutheran Women.

She is survived by four daughters, Frances Mae Barrett, Shirley Bernice Aikens and Linda Darlene Smith, all of Arden, and Wilma Jean Wenger of Inwood, W.Va.; five sons, Willis Burton Barrett at home, Frank David Barrett and Wesley Richard Barrett, both of Martinsburg, Douglas Wayne Barrett of Bladenboro, N.C., and Bruce Eldon Barrett of Hedgesville, W.Va.; two sisters, Betty Hammersla of Alexandria, Va., and Elsie Miller of Martinsburg; two brothers, Bruce Miller and Edward Miller, both of Martinsburg; 32 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Thomas Barrett, Glenville Barrett and Eugene Barrett; one sister, Annie Houst; and one brother, Charles Miller.

Services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg.

The Rev. John D. Yost will officiate.

Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Arden.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ellice G. Cameron

MILLVILLE, W.Va. - Ellice Genevieve Cameron, 78, of Millville, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, at Heartland of Martinsburg Nursing Home.

Born Feb. 11, 1918, in Millville, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Flora Grove Longerbeam.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Frank Cook, in 1973.

She retired as a cook from Jeffersonian Manor Nursing Home, Charles Town, W.Va.

She was a member of Shenandoah Memorial United Methodist Church, Millville.

She is survived by one daughter, Leona Joan Massey of Ranson, W.Va.; one son, Woodrow Cameron of Bunker Hill, W.Va.; two sisters, Hallie Frazier of Shepherdstown, W.Va., and Clara Pierce of Ranson; one brother, Woodrow Longerbeam of Charles Town; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Harry Leroy Cameron; one sister, Nellie Whittington; and two brothers, Charles Nelson Longerbeam and George Franklin Longerbeam.

Services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Eackles-Spencer Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, W.Va.

The Rev. Daniel L. Montague III will officiate.

Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Martinsburg.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lacy H. Barr

Lacy Helen Barr, 84, of Clearview Nursing Home, Hagerstown, and formerly of Summit Avenue, Hagerstown, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 1997, at the nursing home.

Born May 6, 1912, in Raleigh, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Coy Lee and Essie H. Hockaday Davis.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Welch Barr, on Nov. 16, 1976. They were married on May 4, 1941.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

She is survived by four daughters, Betty Cline of Smithsburg, Phoebe McLucas and Joyce "Maggie" Shank, both of Hagerstown, and Joanne Barr of St. Louis; four sons, William F. Barr and William Gossard, both of Hagerstown, the Rev. Joseph F. Barr of Davidsonville, Md., and Jack Souders of New Jersey; one stepdaughter, Colleen Powell of Hagerstown; three sisters, Esther Barr of Baltimore, Peggy Prince of North Carolina and Josephine Puttler of California; three brothers, Marvin Davis, Dan Davis and Earl Davis, all of North Carolina; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Newman Davis and Amos Davis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

The Rev. Joseph F. Burr will be celebrant.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Clearview Nursing Home, 9946 Downsville Pike, Hagerstown, Md. 21740.
