Donald U. Heinz
KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. - Donald Underwood Heinz, 71, of Kearneysville, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.
Born Feb. 23, 1925, in Kearneysville, he was the son of the late Samuel Calvin and Margaret Cathryn Wittman Heinz.
He attended Shepherdstown High School.
He was employed by for Standard Lime Cement Co./Martin Marietta. He retired from Eastalco Aluminum in Frederick, Md.He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans on the USS Winslow.
He was an active member of Independent Bible Church.
He played minor league football with the Martinsburg Spitfire Team and played baseball with the Kearneysville Owls. He also coached Little League.
He loved gardening, especially roses.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Rosella Lee Basore Heinz; two daughters, Sarah Elizabeth Heaton of Millersville, Md., and Carol Lynne Payne of Kearneysville; two sons, Steven Ellis Heinz of Georgetown, Del., and Robert Ray Heinz of Kearneysville; three sisters, Elsie Hampstead of Kearneysville, Anna Stuckey of Martinsburg and Louise Dick of Tampa, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, John Heinz.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Independent Bible Church. The Rev. Curt Lowry and the Rev. Mark D. Johnson will officiate. Graveside services will be private.
The family will receive friends at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Gladys M. Scott
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Gladys M. Scott, 71, of 5224 White Church Road, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at her home.
Born Dec. 13, 1925, in Chambersburg, Pa., she was the daughter of Herbert Henry of Chambersburg, Pa., and the late Alice Wilkinson Henry.
She was a graduate of Chambersburg High School.
She was employed at J. Schoeneman Co. in Chambersburg, for 25 years, retiring in 1987.
She was a member of Women of the Moose 1128 in Chambersburg, and Ladies Auxiliary of AMVETS Post 224 in Chambersburg.
In addition to her father, she is survived by her husband, Ralph Scott Jr., whom she married Feb. 14, 1974; four daughters, Donna Durner, Cathy Jones, Kim Scott and Blanche Scott, all of Chambersburg; three stepsons, Ralph Scott III and Bill Scott, both of Chambersburg, and Frank Scott of Shippensburg; two brothers, Marvin Henry and Kenneth Henry, both of Chambersburg; 14 stepgrandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Arthur Brown will officiate. Burial will be in Flohr's Church Cemetery in Cashtown, Pa.
A viewing will be held at the funeral home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
Nora E. Cunningham
CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Nora E. Cunningham, 86, a resident of Menno-Haven Inc., and formerly of 402 Wayne Ave., Chambersburg, died Friday, Jan. 17, 1997, at Menno-Haven.
Born Oct. 27, 1910, in St. Thomas Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Thomas L. and Ida Belle Bender Hoachlander.
She was formerly employed at Letterkenny Army Depot, Public Opinion and Valleybank, all in Chambersburg.
She was a member of King Street United Brethren Church in Chambersburg, and the Buds of Promise Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, James Arthur Cunningham, a resident of Menno Village in Chambersburg; one son, Arthur Van Cunningham of Newport News, Va.; and one brother, Nelson Hoachlander of Harrisburg, Pa.
She was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Lester F. Stine will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Charles E. Comer Jr.
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Charles Edward Comer Jr., 40, of Martinsburg, died Thursday, Jan. 16, 1997, at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.
Born Sept. 7, 1956, in Martinsburg, he is the son of Charles Edward Comer and Elizabeth Mae Collis Comer, both of Martinsburg.
He worked as a mason.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by one daughter, Bridget Eddy Comer of Martinsburg; one son, Charles B. Comer of Martinsburg; one brother, Rodney W. Comer of Martinsburg; two grandchildren; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Lee Comer; one brother, Douglas Miller; and one grandson.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. The Rev. Earl R. Hairston III will officiate. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 2:30 to 3 p.m.
Nellie L. Ahalt
Nellie L. Ahalt, 84, of West Baltimore Street, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born May 16, 1912, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Jerome and Lulu Poffenberger Rudy.
She was employed with Montgomery Ward in Hagerstown.
She is survived by her husband, Eugene A. Ahalt; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be private.

Hilah O.A. Griffin
SMITHSBURG - Hilah Olena Atwood Griffin, 100, of Crystal Falls Drive, died Monday, Jan. 20, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Nov. 12, 1896, in Keene, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Willis and Josie Bruce Atwood, who traveled there by covered wagon to start a school.
She was a high school graduate. She attended Southwestern Junior College, which her father helped to build, for one year.
She was a school teacher, and as a minister's wife, lived in Texas, Wyoming, Kansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. After retirement, she and her husband lived in California and then Maryland.
She was a member of Williamsport Seventh-day Adventist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Albert Griffin; one daughter, Josephine Benton of Smithsburg; two grandsons, Roy Albert Benton and David Elvin Benton; and five grandsons.
She was one of a family of nine children.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Williamsport Seventh-day Adventist Church, Md. 68, Williamsport.
The family will greet friends at the church before and after the service.
Burial will be in George Washington Cemetery, Riggs Road in Adelphi, Md., on Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial to encourage children in the study of music will be arranged through Williamsport Seventh-day Adventist Church, Box 233, Williamsport, Md. 21795.
Sarah B. Saunders
Sarah Beard Saunders, 74, of Garlock Manor Nursing Home in Hagerstown, and formerly of Robinwood Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 1997, at Washington County Hospital.
Born Sept. 17, 1922, near Chewsville, she was the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Elva Metz Beard Sr.
Her husband, Charles Saunders, died in 1976.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Ridenour of Hagerstown, Sarah Wetzel Frock of Littlestown, Pa., and Mabel Orndorff of Emmitsburg, Md.; two sons, Frank Saunders of Reisterstown, Md., and Milton Saunders of Finksburg, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur C. Beard Jr.
Graveside services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Smithsburg Cemetery. The Rev. William C. Kercheval will officiate.

Alvin B. Keller
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Alvin B. Keller, 66, of Martinsburg, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 1997, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg.
Born Nov. 22, 1930, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Charles and Woody Elizabeth Biller Keller.
He retired from the U.S. government as a computer analyst.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served with the U.S. Marine Corps.
He was a member of Shenandoah Bible Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte D. Pifer Keller; two daughters, Joann M. Keller and Deena L. Keller, both of Martinsburg; three sons, Douglas A. Keller, Dennis L. Keller and David E. Keller, all of Martinsburg; two sisters, Valley Bailey of Sarasota, Fla., and Juanita Keller of Sharon, Pa.; one brother, Haven E. Keller of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home in Martinsburg. Don Smith, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View Memory Gardens.
