Orrin Ray Burdick

Orrin Ray Burdick, 91, died Tuesday at a Portland Hospital.
He was born in Providence, R.I., the son of Albert C. and Grace A. Bragg Burdick, and attended schools in that area.
An orphan, he came to Vermont, where he was an estate manager. Later, he moved to York Harbor, where he and his wife managed an estate for twenty years before retiring to Gray. He came from a musical family and was an accomplished tenor banjo player and collected old Jazz records. Mr. Burdick was a Corporal in the Marine Corps and a Veteran of W.W.II. He was a member of the Gray Senior citizens and a member of the Royal River Rod and Gun Club.
Surviving are his wife Ruth B. Burdick, of Gray; a son, Douglas B. Burdick, of Auburn; and a nephew, James Burdick, of Poland.
There will be no funeral. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray.

Mildred Eleanor Pollard Dies
Mildred Eleanor Pollard
Mildred Eleanor Pollard, 70, died Tuesday, November 11, at her home in Gray. Born in Boston, MA, the daughter of Almond L. and Helen F. Choate Doggett, she graduated from Melrose High School in 1945 and attended Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was a well-known figure in Gray, as head of the meat department at the A&P and IGA grocery stores, a meat cutter at Cole Farms and-perhaps most of all-as a member of a large Gray family. He is survived by four sons: Gary J., Jeffrey M. and Bradley W., all of Gray, and David C., of South Thomaston; two brothers: Vernon and Philip, both of Gray; four sisters: Barbara Ryan, Jane Barton and Donna Hill, all of Gray, and Geraldine Cose, of Connecticut and Richard Bendixion of Gray; and three grandchildren, Matthew, Meghan, and Michele.His wife, Cheryl A. Dehetre, died in 1990.
A spring burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery.
Jesse May Phoenix
Poet, artist and nature-lover Jessie May Phoenix, 71, died at her home on Monday, May 11.
Born in Shark River Hills, Connecticut University. She was an elementary school teacher in Des Moines, Florida.
She enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, writing, sending e-mail, exploring the internet and meeting with a writers' group and a spiritual discussion group.
She wrote several books, Sweet Remembered Fragrance of the Soul, Living Under the Edge and The Road to Home, two of which were published. She also had an essay published in Essays by the Iowa.
She was married March 29, 1947, to Richard Phoenix, who died in 1970. She is survived by a son, Jim Phoenix, of Gray; four daughters, Gail Walker, of Gray, Nancy Reed, of Elkhart, Connecticut, and Peg Payne of San Diego, Maine - Sarah Wilson Garrett, 76, a Gray resident for many years, died Wednesday.
Born in Rockland, Vermont in 1941 and from Yale Law School in 1944.
Mrs. Garrett was an enthusiastic Girl Scout, attaining honors as a Golden Eaglet. In 1934, she won the National Spelling Bee in Connecticut, District of Columbia and Maryland bars, and of the American Bar Association.
She was an avid reader, who loved animals and crossword puzzles. She was active in the community as a volunteer, a dedicated Episcopalian and a longtime Communicant of St. Anne's Church in Annapolis.
Devoted to her family, Mrs. Garrett returned to Maine Medical Center after a long illness.
Mr. LaVallee attended Dry Mills school, and graduated from Pennell Institute. He was road commissioner and public works director for Gray, as well as deputy chief and later chief of the Gray fire department.
His son, Steven LaVallee, took over as head of public works from his father four years ago. `It was more than just a job,' his son said of Mr. LaVallee. `We spent many Christmases and other holidays waiting to open our gifts and have our meals because he was out plowing or sanding the roads.'
Mr. LaVallee also found time to coach Little League, and he was a founder of Gray Youth Club. He was also an active Masonic member, and he enjoyed camping, fishing, auto racing and serving Gray.
His funeral was attended by most of Gray's public officials and a host of his friends and fellow Masons. He is survived by two sons, Steven N. of Gray and Todd J. of Windham; two daughters, Gail Smart of Windham and Tami-Jo Staples of Gray; his father, of Gray; a sister, Patricia Merrill of Yarmouth; and 10 grandchildren.
