Elizabeth Small, 84

Elizabeth Mae Small, 84, died at Ledgewood Manor.
Mrs. Small was born May 14, 1916, in Rumford. She was the daughter of Charles Therian and Stella Ruff Packard. She graduated from Leavitt Institute in 1935.
Mrs. Small worked as a cook at Cole Farms Restaurant for several years. She enjoyed knitting, gardening and camping, and had been a leader for the Pioneer Girls. She was a family member of Camp Sunshine.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, William L. Small, of New Gloucester; four daughters, Sylvia Hamblet, Suzanne Small, Sherry Lane and Sandra Kimball, all of Gray; one brother, William T. Packard, of Rumford; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Mary Verrill, 77

Mary L. Verrill, 77, of Gray, died unexpectedly at her home on Monday, September 18.
She was born in Lewiston on May 7, 1923, the daughter of Edward ands Mary Bartlett Spencer. She was educated in Lewiston schools, and graduated from Lewiston High School in 1941.
On November 23, 1950, she married Donald E. Verrill in Lewiston.
Mrs. Verrill enjoyed gardening, her family, grandchildren and her dog, Ginger.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Donald E. Verrill, of Gray; one son, Ernest, and his wife, Wendy, of Gray; four grandchildren, Laura, Brian, Rebecca Pelletier and Cody Verrill; and a brother, Raymond Spencer, of Lewiston. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Spencer.
A funeral mass was celebrated on Thursday morning at St. Gregory's Parish, with Msgr. Robert Lavoie celebrant. Committal will be in Gray Village Cemetery.

Leon Libby passes away at 88

Leon E. Libby, 88, died October 16 at Kennebunk Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Augusta, he was a son of George L. and Mary I. Carleson Libby.
Mr. Libby retired from General Electric after many years in its South Portland plant.
He is survived by his wife, Belna L. Libby, of the Barron Center, in Portland; a son, Leon E., Jr., of Kennebunk; two stepsons, Richard A. Stowell, of Gray, and Ralph A. Stowell, of New Gloucester; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren and several stepgreat-grandchildren and a stepgreat-great-grandson.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on Wednesday in St. Gregory's Church, Gray, and burial was in Gray Village Cemetery.
George Freeman, Jr.

George Leonard Freeman, Jr., 87, of Gray, died October 10 at his home.
He was born in Portland, a son of George L. and Annie Kimball Freeman, Sr. He graduated from Syracuse University.
He was founder and owner of Freeman Welding Supply.
Mr. Freeman was a member of First Congregational Church of Gray, the Lions Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Woodfords Merchant Assocation, the Missions Board of Woodfords Congregational Church, Gray Senior Housing and the Gray Cemetery Association. He also was American Tree Farm owner.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa C. Freeman; four daughters, Gail F. Reeve, of Portland, Lynn Robbins, of Bath, Judith C. Longshore, of Arcata, CA, and Joanne C. Keir, of Watertown, MA; two sisters, Emily Sanford, of Mount Vernon, NY, and Alice Muchnic, of Kennebunk; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Shirley J. Fogg

Shirley J. Fogg, of Center Road in Gray, died October 9 at a Portland hospital. She was 59.
Mrs. Fogg was a pioneer for women in the construction business. In the early 1980s, shortly after her husband became disabled, Mrs. Fogg started Warren's General Contracting. It was one of the first woman-owned general contracting companies established with federal assistance.
She worked eight years to build Warren's General Contracting into a multimillion dollar enterprise, handling such projects as an excavation and drainage project on Interstate 95.
Eventually, disability forced her to leave the business.
She is survived by her husband, Mark Fogg; two daughters, Mrs. Charles (Diane) Brady, of Mesa, New Hampshire, she was a daughter of Charles and Eva Rand Allen. She grew up in Westbrook, Maine, and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1932.
Mrs. Walker had been a member of the First Congregational Church of Gray, and sang in its choir. She was also a member of Gray Extension.
Her husband, Lawrence Walker, died in 1994.
She is survived by two daughters, Sheryl Wilbur, of Gray, and Linda Strout, of Gorham, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Thursday at the First Congregational Church of Gray, with Pastor George Bovill officiating. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.
