Rodney W. Lodge

Rodney W. Lodge, 67, of Gray, died January 10, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA.
Mr. Lodge was born in Eastport, a son of Byron and Lena Peters Lodge. He graduated from Shead High School.
After his discharge from the Navy, in which he served as a corpsman during the Korean War, Mr. Lodge married and started a family. He earned a degree from Bryant College, taking night classes.
He was a marketing representative for the Shell Oil Company and later for Getty Petroleum. He retired in 1990, and lived in Saco for many years before moving to Gray.
He is survived by three sons, Mark D. and Brad R., both of Lyman, and Kirk D., of Alfred, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in North Windham.
Bertha Higgins Loomis

Bertha Higgins Loomis, formerly of Gray, died January 15 at the age of 83, following a long illness.
She was born August 15, 1917, in Standish, daughter of Monte and Lucy Adelaide (Moulton) Frost. She attended local schools, and graduated from Gorham Normal School.
Bertha married Karlton (Gus) E. Higgins on June 15, 1942; he died in 1980. She married Charles H. Loomis on April 4, 1992; he died in August of 2000.
Bertha and Gus lived in South Paris until 1966. She was an elementary and junior high school teacher in the Norway (now Oxford Hills) schools. After moving to Gray in 1966, Gus became principal of Gray-New Gloucester High School, and Bertha became Alumni Director of the Gorham campus of the University of Maine).
Bertha was active in many professional and civic organizations, and will be missed by her family and friends. Bertha enjoyed nature, reading, playing bridge and Scrabble. On Thanksgiving Day, 2000, she was able to enjoy dinner at the home of her son, with all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in attendance.
Besides her husbands, she was predeceased by an infant daughter, Susan Higgins; her sister, Elizabeth (Frost) Bussone; her brother, Maynard Frost; and her nephew, Carl Frost.
Survivors include her son, Stephen Higgins, and his wife Ruth, of Oakland; grandchildren Christopher Higgins, of Brewer, Kathleen (Higgins) Cunningham, of Oakland; Rebecca (Higgins) Blakely, of Rochester Hills, MI; great-grandsons Chase and Jared Cunningham, of Oakland; a special niece, Terry (Bussone) Moher, of Durham, NH; and nephews David Bussone, Jerry Bussone and Mark Bussone.
At Bertha's request, there will be no public services. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Wheeler Funeral Home, of Oakland.

Helen Frances Faunce, 79

Helen Frances Faunce, 79, died January 13 at a local nursing home.
She was born in Gray, a daughter of True M. and Thirza Huntress Colley, attended local schools and graduated from Pennell Institute here.
Her husband, Erwin Faunce, died in 1983.
Surviving are a son, Ronald G. Faunce of New Gloucester, two daughters, Diane J. Temm of Gorham and Marcia H. Williamson of South Portland, a sister, Dorothy Wentworth of Portland; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Virginia Bailey, mother of James Gillies

Virginia Toole Gillies Bailey, 95, of 25 Thornton Way, formerly of Bath, died February 8 at The Hawthorne House in Freeport.
She was the mother of James Gillies, formerly of Gray and now of Bath.
Mrs. Bailey was born January 16, 1906, in New Haven, Pennsylvania. She attended Barnard College in Maine Horse Association of which his father was a founder. Mrs. Bailey was a Friend of Bowdoin College, a life member of the Maine 04011. Arrangements are by Mayo, Curtis & Hill Funeral Home, 819 High Street, Bath.
Louise Butler, 88

Louise E. Butler, 88, the mother of Jean Carr and Judi Strout, both of Gray, died February 9 at Ledgewood Manor, Windham.
Mrs. Butler was born in Ellsworth, a daughter of H. Wesley and Eunice Higgins Smith, and graduated from Ellsworth High School.
Besides her daughters, she is survived by a son, Edward Butler, of Ellsworth; a sister, Kathryn Makepeace, of Schenectady, NY; 14 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held last Monday at Wilson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Darwin Vail officiating.
Ethel Cummings

Ethel H. Cummings, of Windham, died March 16 in a Portland hospital.
She was born in Gray, a daughter of Harry and Libby Horr, and had lived in Windham from 1949.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth R. Cummings, of Gray, and Nellie R. Knight, of Windham; two grandchildren, Jennifer R. Cummings Potter, of Gray, and Caleb E. Cummings, of Windham; and one great grandchild, Jewel R. E. Cummings, of Windham.
Burial will be in spring in the family lot in Smith Cemetery.
Clara Morey, 80

Clara M. Morey, 80, died last Tuesday at a Lewiston nursing home. Born in New Bedford, MA, September 10, 1920, she was the daughter of Joseph and Amelia Banas Glowacki. She graduated from the Lady of Perpetual Help Parochial School in 1938.
Mrs. Morey was the 4-time President of the Gray Unit #86 American Legion Auxiliary, and was instrumental in the Memorial Day activities. She was very active with Saint Gregory's Parish, teaching CCD. She loved reading, animals and playing Beano.
Mrs. Morey is survived by her husband of 56 years, James Morey, of Gray, whom she married on October 6, 1945; one son, Daniel Morey of Gray; four daughters, Nancy Roderick, of Gray, Patricia Caron, of Sabbattus, Cynthia Lavertu, of Oxford, and Marcia Noyes of Cumberland; and twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass was celebrated Saturday at St. Gregory's Parish, North Raymond Road, Gray. Monsignor Robert Lavoie was the Celebrant. Committal will be in Gray Village Cemetery in the Spring.
Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
