Francois Jean Lamontagne

Francois Jean Lamontagne, 88, of Gray, died July 26.
Born in Bury, Canada, he was a son of Arsene and Odelie Carrier Lamontagne. He was an Army Air Forces sergeant on a C-47 during the war.
After the war, he worked as a foreman at Portland Copper.
He was a member of St. Gregory's Parish in Gray.
He was predeceased by his wife, Geraldine Gurney. Mr. Lamontagne is survived by four brothers, Joe Lamont, of Maine Newspapers for 21 years.
Mr. Beardsley enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting, and he coached soccer and baseball.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Terri Manchester Beardsley, of Gray; a daughter, Sarah Beardsley, of Portland; two sons, Zachery Edwin and Eric Rand, both of Gray; two sisters, Mrs. Alfred (Grace) Merrick, of West Paris, and Mrs. Stephen (Merianne) Pepin, of West Gay; three brothers, Francis, of South Portland, Matthew, of West Paris, and Mark, of Maine National Guard during World War II. He served in the 103rd infantry as supply sergeant. He earned the good Conduct Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Combat ribbon, as well as the Victory Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and four stars, and a Bronze Star for meritorious service.
Mr. Morey married Clara Glowacki, of New Bedford, MA,in 1945; she died in March of this year.
He worked for Gray Oil Company and Westbrook Hardware. He retired in 1980 from the U.S. Postal Service after 23 years of service.
He traveled to Hawaii after retiring, and became active in several organizations. He was a president of the Senior Citizens Club, and was past commander of the Harold Nason Veterans of Foreign Wars post. He served two terms as commander and chaplain of the American Legion. He was a Cubmaster for 13 years, and a Scout leader for four years. He also served as a Scout committee member.
Mr. Morey was elected a Selectman of Gray in 1966, and became First Selectman in 1969.
He converted to Catholicism, and helped found St. Gregory's Parish, in Gray. He was the first president of the St. Gregory's Men's Club.
He is survived by a son, Daniel, of Gray; four daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Nancy) Roderick, of Gray, Mrs. Ralph (Patricia) Caron, of Sabattus, Mrs. Robert (Cynthia) Lavertu, of Oxford, and Mrs. Steve (Marcia) Noyes, of Cumberland; a brother, Kenneth, of Portland; ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was celebrated last Monday at St. Gregory's, with Msgr. Robert Lavoie officiating. Burial was in Gray Village Cemetery. Arrangements were by Wilson Funeral Home.
Eva Whitney

Eva Lillian Whitney, 81, died December 24, 2001.
She was born in Bridgton, the daughter of Armenegil Joseph and Lillian Dora Poulin Pelletier.
Mrs. Whitney worked as a C.N.A. at Ledgewood Manor and Private duty and as a Pastry Chef at Cole Farms.
Having been denied the opportunity to graduate high school in her youth, she went back to high school at the age of 61. She graduated from P.R.V.T.C. in 1983.
She is predeceased by her husband, Harold Whitney, who died October 30, 2001.
Surviving are two sons, Nathan McMinn and Blaine Whitney; two daughters, June Cormier and Lancey Wheaton; two brothers, Joseph and David Pelletier; one sister, Ida Noyes; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service was held 1ast Saturday at Wilson Funeral Home, 24 Shaker Road, Gray. Reverend Keith Wheaton officiated. Committal will be private. Memorial donations may be made to Community Health Services, 679 Roosevelt Trail, Windham, Iowa, Delores Bailey, of Westbrook, and Gloria Charett, of Gorham; four brothers, Albert, Romeo and Philip, all of Gorham, and Roger, of Massachusetts; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A Mass will be celebrated on July 29 at 10:30 A.M. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, Route 302, Windham.
