Barbara Caswell, 84, former Gray resident

Barbara C. Caswell, 84, of Portland and formerly of Gray, died September 2 at a Westbrook nursing home.
She was born in Gloucester, Maine.
Barbara was a member of American Legion Ladies' Auxiliary.
She loved to play bingo, cards and cribbage. She was a very sociable person who had many friends, and she enjoyed their company.
One of her prouder moments was being a finalist on the game show, You Think You Know Me.
Her husband of 64 years died in 2001. She was also predeceased by three daughters, Barbara Pennell, Wilma Maine Coast Baptist Church in Ellsworth.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, Mark and Michael Rand, of Spokane, WA; two sisters, Trudy Foster , of Gray, and Maureen Arsenault, of Lamoine; three brothers, Mark Ashley, of Gray, Marshall Ashley, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and Frank Ashley, of Maine Coast Baptist Church, the Rev. Gerry Dill officiating. Gifts in memory of Marie may be sent to the Mary Dow Center, 50 Union Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605.
Helen Gates, 91

Helen Elizabeth Gates, 91, of Gray, died Tuesday at a Portland Hospital.
She was born in Menomonee, WI, on February 24, 1913, a daughter of Henry Carl and Amelia Beguhn Diedrich, and graduated from Stout University in Washington and marching with Martin Luther King. Via the telephone and writing, Mrs. Gates was an advocate for many social issues. Further, she would write and make calls to numerous shut-ins as a means of providing good works.
The Gates family has established numerous scholarships to further the educational opportunities of minorities, supported many charities and provided the University of Maine Medical Center, with his family by his side.
He was the loving husband of Brenda and the cherished father of Michael O'Brien, of Gray, Heather Millett, of Raymond, Karen Roberts, of Standish, Donald K. Kelley, Jr., of Unity, and David O'Brien, of Rapid City, ND.
He was a proud World War II veteran. He retired 15 years ago after a long career with the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed spending his retirement years with his wife, children, 15 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was also an avid sports fan who loved a good game of golf with his friends, and he was a loyal fan of the Portland SeaDogs and the New England Patriots.
Donald will always be loved and remembered by all whose lives he enhanced.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Gray Public Library, 5 Hancock Street, Gray, ME 04039.
Services will be private at the request of the family. Arrangements are under the care of Wilson Funeral Home.
Ruth Swanson

Ruth Elizabeth Swanson, "Ruthie", of North Yarmouth, who had many friends in Gray, passed away on September 26 after a courageous battle with breast cancer.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Albert L. Swanson; four sons, David and his wife Kathy Swanson, of Helena, MT, Albert Swanson, also of Helena, Andrew Swanson, of North Yarmouth,Daniel and his wife Andrea, of Lisbon; and a daughter, Karen and her husband Jeff Gillespie, of Fort Benton, MT. She is also survived by her stepmother, Eleanor Clemons, of Yarmouth, two sisters, Judy Gay, of Machias, and Joyce Marsden, of Covington, WA, and a brother, Raymond Clemons, Jr., of Hermon, as well as many nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, and burial followed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 102454, Atlanta, GA 30368-2454.
Jean Butler, of NG

With her family by her side, Jean Davis Butler, of New Gloucester, passed away on Saturday, September 25, at Maine Medical Center, after a long illness.
She was born in Danville on October 16, 1933, a daughter of Clyde Almon and Selena Rose Chippendale Davis. She graduated from Edward Little High School in 1952.
She worked as a librarian in New Gloucester and as a nurse and a real estate broker. She enjoyed horses, writing, traveling, Bible study and spending time with her family.
Jean was predeceased by her husband, Edward, in 1975, and by her two brothers, Clyde and Robert.
Jean is survived by her children, Michael and wife Betty, Mark and wife Jeannie, Gloria Theriault and husband Alan, David and wife Donna and Shawn and wife LeeAnn; by grandchildren Eric, Adam, Nathan, Baba, Brittany, Brooke, Brielle and Jacob; great-grandchildren Kristie and Kaine; sisters Ruth Bickford, Mary Tyler and Janice Conant; brother-in-law Agary Conant; and sister-in-law Isabelle Temm. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A reception was held in her honor, and a Memorial Celebration is being held at 2 P.M., Friday, from the Memorial Chapel of Dillingham & Son, with Pastor Richard Ryerson presiding. A graveside committal service will follow at the family lot in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Auburn.
It was Jean's request that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent in care of Gloria Thebault to establish a scholarship fund in Jean's name to benefit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Frederick Adler, Pennell graduate

Frederick W. Adler, Jr., 69, died October 6 at the Sebasticook Valley Health Care Facility in Pittsfield after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
He was born October 23, 1934, in Presque Isle, the son of Frederick W. Adler, Sr., and Christine (Simonson) Adler. He graduated from Pennell Institute, in Gray, Class of 1953.
He married the former Carol Hamblett on August 31, 1957, in Gray.
He was a school bus driver in SAD #15 from 1954-1963; after that, he was employed by Trailways of New England. He also built homes in the Gray area from 1960-1982.
He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club in Gray, a past member of the Cub Scouts Pack #86 and a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve.
He loved to work, and enjoyed his garden.
Survivers include his wife of 47 years, Carol; a son, Timothy Adler and his wife Paula, of Newport; a daughter, Wanda Caron and her husband Mike, of Portland; a sister, Bea Muzzy and her husband George, of Gray; a brother, Robert Adler and his wife Merilyn, of Lake Wales, FL; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother, father and a sister, Emma Hilton.
There will be no funeral services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Donald H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, Pittsfield.
