Louise Doughty, 86

Louise M. Doughty, of Gray, 86 years old, passed away November 7, after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Texas, the only daughter of Edmond A. Croix and Julie Louise Pingeon, on June 25, 1918. Her parents migrated to the US from Switzerland in 1908.
She belonged to many charitable organizations, including the Road Runners travel group and her beloved 1918 Club. She was Past President and treasurer of the East Windham Firemen's Ladies Auxiliary and Past Treasurer of the Crossroads Garden Club.
She worked as a receptionist many years for Dr. Elton Blaisdell, also as secretary for the Cumberland County Civil Defense in South Windham. She attended church in East Windham, North Windham, and most recently the Gray Congregational church in Gray. Her parents and five brothers preceded her in death.
She married Everett W. Doughty, of Gray, on November 5 1945, in Beaumont, California; Jeri Sandoval and husband Chris, of Shreveport, Maine, 04039.
Helen King, formerly of Gray

Helen Frederica Miller Hodge King, who lived in Gray at one time, died on November 10 at a Portland hospital.
She worked for Healthtex, Pineland and Upjohn Hospice. In Gray, she coached softball and was active in Scouting.
She is survived by four children, Vanessa Tomlinson, of Portland, Carleton Hodge, of Limington, Kathleen Breiding, of Buxton, and Sallie Gibson, of Port Richey, FL; eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are under the care of Hobbs Funeral Home, South Portland.
Ruth Cook

Ruth Griffin Cook, 85, of Portland, died November 20 at Sedgewood Commons, after many years of living with Alzheimer's Disease.
Her husband, Philip A. Cook, founded Cook's Ace Hardware.
She was born in Fall River, MA, the thirteenth child of Robert E. Griffin and Sara A. Lockhart. She attended local schools and graduated from B.M.C. Durfee High School. She worked at the local Woolworth, Sears Roebuck and Bell Shops after graduation.
She married Philip Cook in 1942, and recently celebrated 62 years of marriage. They had five children. A B-17 pilot, he was stationed in Atlantic City, Pittsburgh, Nashville, Montgomery, Camden, SC, Augusta and Valdosta, GA, San Antonio, Sebring, FL, Gulfport, MS, Lavenham, England and finally Tampa.
Mrs. Cook was active in Bluebirds and Girls Scouts. After her children had grown, she volunteered at St. Joseph Manor and Maine Medical Center due to complications from pneumonia.
Mrs. Lowe was born in Hallowell to Ivan and Ilene (Mosely) Cole. She was married to Edward C. Lowe for 52 years, most of which were spent in New Gloucestser. She grew up in South Portland and graduated from South Portland High School in 1943.
After graduation, she worked at Maine Medical Center in Lewiston as a ward clerk in the Intensive Care Unit. She was there for approximately five years before leaving to become a housewife again.
She loved to do crossword puzzles, and played many heated games of Scrabble with friends at her kitchen table. She took art lessons and did some oil painting, watercolor, pen and ink, scratchboard and pencil drawings. She also enjoyed the weekly bowling league, until she became ill.
Frances leaves her husband, Edward C. Lowe, Jr., of New Gloucester; a son, Peter F. Lowe, of Oxford; a daughter, Deborah J. Emery and her husband Dean M.; three grandchildren, Eric E. Emery, Michael D. Emery and Sherri E. Emery, all of New Gloucester; a cousin, Ella Andrews, of Hallowell; and two nieces and a nephew.
She was predeceased by a son, Stephen C. Lowe, in 1973, and a sister, Mary Estes, in 2000.

Emily Segars

Emily M. Segars,87, of New Gloucester, died December 20 at a Lewiston Nursing Home. She was born March 21,1917, to William A. and Clara (Merrill) Bridgham. She attended Poland schools and graduated from Mechanic Falls High School.
Mrs. Segars worked at Lown and Crest Shoe for 18 years. She also worked for13 years with Concord Group Insurance Companies, retiring in 1982, and returning a year later to work part-time for another 7 years. She was a Charter Member of the Busy Bee Club of Poland (60+years); a member of Golden Sheaf Chapter 114, Order of the Eastern Star for more than 50 years, serving as Worthy Matron several terms; a member of Hiawatha Rebekah Lodge, later affiliated with Fidelity in Auburn (50+years), a member of Androscoggin Valley Chapter of Insurance Women (International). As a member of Certified Professional Insurance Women, she was named Insurance Woman of the Year in 1982.
She served as a volunteer at the New Gloucester News since 1983.
Mrs. Segars is survived by three sons, Ronald and his wife Marilyn, of MA, Roger, of Brunswick, and Charles and his wife Linda, of New Gloucester; seven grandsons, six great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons, two great-great-granddaughters two step-grandsons, four step-great-grandsons and two step-great-granddaughters.
A funeral was held at the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester; committal will be in the spring, with Reverend Linda Gard officiating.

Patricia Wood dies after long illness

Patricia Joanne Wood (Thurlow), 45, of Gray, received her wings to be with God on January 3, 2005. She fought a gallant and courageous battle with a brain tumor for over 17 years.
Pat was the very proud daughter to Robert Listin and Constance Marie (Avery) Thurlow. Her dad, Robert, passed away in March of 1992 and had been greatly missed. Pat was born on February 3, 1959, at TX 75606, 1-903-236- 7079, www.asap4sm.org.
Charlotte Burnell, formerly of Gray

Charlotte Burnell, 85, of North Yarmouth, died last Saturday after a long illness.
She is survived by her only duaghter, Judith Seavey; six grandchildren, Dennis Seavey, Jeffrey Seavey, Diane Doe, Stephen Seavey, Michael Seavey and Scott Seavey; eighteen great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Burnell once lived in Gray.
