Elizabeth Caswell dies at 81

Elizabeth Merrill Berry Caswell, 81, passed away February 15.
She was born in New Gloucester on September 30, 1923, daughter of Henry True and Ina (Haskell) Merrill.
Elizabeth graduated from New Gloucester High School in 1942 and graduated from Dr. Leighton's Hospital in Portland as an LPN. She worked in the field of gynecology and obstetrics until she was married in 1945 to Ronald Walter Berry, of New Gloucester, who died in 1966. Elizabeth enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting and was a 60-year member of the Sabbathday Lake Grange. She loved her grandchildren and enjoyed family gatherings.
Elizabeth was predeceased by two brothers, Blynn and Henry Merrill. She is survived by her daughter, Althea Driscoll and her husband Stephen; her two sons, Stephen Berry and wife Bonnie, of Gray, and Walter Berry and his wife Rena; seven grandchildren, Leesa and Jennifer Driscoll, Mitchell Berry, Cindy and Patricia Berry, Tim Lewis and Angie George; one brother, True Merrill and wife Mary; and many nieces and nephews.
There was a period of remembrance on Friday at Wilson Funeral Home. A graveside service will be announced in the spring. Memorial donations may be made to New Gloucester Rescue, P.O. Box 82, New Gloucester, Maine, Vermont.
Mr. Gearin was a member of the Portland Elks Lodge-BPOE Lodge #188, the Holy Cross Alumni Club of Maine Post, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Casco, Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to The College of Holy Cross Alumni Fund, One College Street, Worcester, MA 01610-2325, or to Raymond Rescue, P.O. Box 741, Raymond, ME 04105.

Ruth Hersey passes away at 87

Ruth Harriet (Davis) Hersey, 87, of New Gloucester, died February 16 at Ledgeview Living Center in West Paris.
Mrs. Hersey was born in Tuftonboro, NH, a daughter of Harry and Sarah (Gilman) Davis. She married Robert S. Hersey in 1933, in Tuftonboro; he died in 1978.
She was always a homemaker and was very active in the New Gloucester Bible Church.
She is survived by her son, John, and wife Shelia, Hersey of North Norway; daughters Marylou Shattuck and husband Allen, of Auburn, and Bonnie Hersey of Mechanic Falls; a granddaughter, Kimberly Hersey, of North Norway; a sister, Eleanor Knights, of Exeter, NH; and several nieces nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by her husband; two sisters, Beatrice Davis and Mildred Dore; and two brothers, Albert Davis and Arthur Davis.
Visitation was last Sunday at Wilson Funeral Home, with a funeral service immediately following. Burial will be in Lower Gloucester Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 162 Lancaster Street, Portland, ME 04101.

Dennis Cox, 49

Dennis Samuel Cox, 49, who grew up in Gray, died March 9, after a brief illness at a Bangor hospital.
He was born August 26, 1955, in Lubec, the son of Samuel and Norma (Crosby) Cox, of Edmunds.
Despite many other achievements in his life, Dennis considered his family and friends his greatest accomplishment. He graduated from Shead Memorial High School and Maine at Orono, becoming a member of Phi Mu sorority and graduating in 1924.
On August 1, 1925, Aileen wed Eben Dutton Tufts, of New Gloucester.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church of New Gloucester, and was active in civic affairs in both Gray and New Gloucester for more than 60 years.
She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Eben; a son, Payson A. Tufts, Jr., and a great-grandson, Mark Wallace.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara E. Pollard; grandchildren Denise Pollard, Wayne Pollard ands his wife Gwen; great-grandchildren Jessica Pollard and Nicole Hamilton and her husband Walker, all of Gray; a son, Gordon E. Tufts, of Las Vegas; grandchildren Terry Lynn, of Oregon; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation period was held on Tuesday; a graveside service will be held later. Memorial donations may be made to The Opportunity Farm for Boys and Girls, P.O. Box 65, New Gloucester, ME 04260.
