Angele Powers, 77
2005-09-09
Angele (Vaugeois) Powers, formerly of Cousins Island, Yarmouth, ME, passed away August 30 at York Hospital of complications from a stroke.
The daughter of the late Cecile (Gelinas) and Lucien Vaugeois, she was born February 12, 1928 in Detroit, MI, grew up in Montreal and Quebec City, Canada, and received a classical education in Roman Catholic boarding schools in Quebec Province. She also took classes at McGill University, Montreal. Mrs. Powers worked as a secretary in Montreal for Shell Oil Company and the Teller Auto Company before moving to the U.S. in 1957 when she was married. She then worked at Columbia University and in later years, worked with her husband in their business, Powers Associates.
Mrs. Powers was known as a woman of deep faith, graceful manners, and a warm, welcoming hospitality. Her motherly love for children extended beyond her immediate family to include nieces and nephews as well as neighborhood children and her daughters' friends. She reached out to them as well as helped make the family home a comfortable gathering spot for many years. Before moving to Yarmouth, ME, the family lived in Everett, MA, where her late husband Stephen J. Powers, Jr. had grown up, Lynnfield, MA, and York and Swarthmore, PA.
A dual citizen of Canada and the US., Mrs. Powers was very proud of her French-Canadian heritage and shared her first language and culture with family and friends. A superb cook and baker, her repertoire included French-Canadian specialties such as meat pies, sugar pie and mille fois. She also shared treasured stories over the years of her youthful adventures biking round-trip from Montreal to Quebec City; traveling across Canada by train; and summer lake-side vacations and winter ski trips in Quebec Province with friends and family.
In recent years, Mrs. Powers spent much time cheering on her grandchildren in their academic, athletic and artistic endeavors.
A faithful, supportive friend, she regularly attended Mass with a special group of friends, some of whom say she served as a mentor for them in life and spiritual matters. She also kept close ties with other friends she had known since childhood.
Mrs. Powers was very active with her church, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Parish of Yarmouth and Freeport. She served as a translator for personnel and correspondence from their sister church in Haiti, volunteered in the office, served as a Eucharistic Minister in nursing homes, was active on the Hospitality Committee, and helped with special events such as the Church Fair.
Over the years, she volunteered for the United Cerebral Palsy Association and the McAuley Residence, taught French as a volunteer to Yarmouth Junior High School students, visited local retired nuns, and was a member of Alliance Francaise.
She also enjoyed gardening; classical music and opera; traveling with her late husband, daughters and friends; studying the art of the Impressionist painters; and reading the works of French and French-Canadian writers. While raising her family, she held her own as a vocal fan of the Montreal Canadians even though surrounded by a sea of Boston Bruin supporters.
Mrs. Powers is pre-deceased by her husband, Stephen J. Powers, Jr.; her sister, Rollande Prefontaine; and her son-in-law, Adam de la Barre.
She is survived by four daughters, Helene Powers of Northampton, MA; Claudette Simms and husband Don of Gray, ME; Michele Vermette and husband Nick of Topsham, ME; and Suzanne Powers of Somerville, MA; her grandchildren Caroline, Ryan, Russell, Cameron and Rowan; sister Claire Tanguay of Winnipeg, Manitoba; brother Jean-Paul Vaugeois of Belwood, Ontario; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives in Canada and the US.
