Ann Clark Distant, 67, died after a brief fight against cancer, on September 5 at her home in Limington, surrounded by family.
Born in Plymouth, MA, she was the only child of Irving "Bud" Clark and Louise Howland Clark. The family moved to Orrington, ME, in 1951, where she competed in horse shows and won many awards. She graduated from Brewer High School in 1956 and attained her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maine.

New beginnings... sudden endings
On September 14, James Peter Murray, son of Leanne R. Bernier and R. Scott Murray, was welcomed into the family.
His maternal grandparents are James and Laurie Bernier, of Raymond, and his paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert Garrett and the late J. P. Murray, of Florida. His maternal great-grandparents are Patricia Lockard and the late Robert Lockard, of Gray.
Mr. Lockard passed away after a one-month struggle with cancer, just 27 hours after James was born. Daily, Mr. Lockard would ask, "Has Leanne had the baby yet?" He died at home with his family by his side.
Mr. Lockard was born in Brunswick on January 4, 1937, the son of Eben and Florence Agnes Richie Lockard. He moved to Gray as a teenager and later married Patricia Carr, of Gray.
He enjoyed traveling, yachting and outdoor recreation of all types, including hunting and camping. In 1988, he and Patsy and his sister Mary and her husband Robert motored a yacht from Maine. He was always full of adventure and loved being social. In July, he hosted a wonderful family party in honor of his recently-discovered half-sister Phyllis McCartney, of Chinook, Montana.
Mr. Lockard was a charter member of the Gray Jaycees. He owned and operated Lockard's Collision Center at Allen's Corner in Portland for over 40 years.
He was predeceased by his parents, his son Robert Mark Lockard, of Gray, and his brother, Robert Kohaly, of Ontario, Canada.
He is survived by his daughter, Laurie, and her husband, James Bernier, of Raymond; his former wife, Patricia Carr Lockard, of Gray; his brother, Eugene Hedley Lockard and his wife Mary, of Lindsay, Ontario; three sisters, Mary Berry, of Gray, Josephine Bisco, of Windham, and Phyllis McCartney, of Chinook. He was loved by his five grandchildren, Rachel and Leanne Bernier, Mark and Rory Lockard and Matthew Bernell, as well as three great-grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no service.

Bessie Witherell dies

Bessie J. Witherell, 89, died October 21.
She was born December 15, 1915, in Acton, MA, a daughter of Ernest C. and Hazel Robbins Frye.
Bessie married Lee F. Adams in 1933, and Gordon Witherell in 1947; Mr. Witherell died in 2001.
She enjoyed square dancing, playing cards and spending winters in Parker Stair.
A funeral was held on Tuesday at the First Congregational Church of Gray, with Reverend Douglas Hedstrom officiating; committal is in Blanchard Cemetery, Falmouth. Arrangements were under the care of Wilson Funeral Home, Gray.
Memorial Donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Maine, Crossland Alumni Center, Orono, Florida.
Florence had been employed by the Census Bureau for several years.
She enjoyed ballroom dancing, and belonged to the Society for the Preservation of Ballroom Dancing.
She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Forrest Bryan; two sons, Brian Leo of Gorham and Glenn Leo of Londonderry, NH; two daughters, Bonnie Needelman of Harrison and Jeanne Pearlstein of New Mexico; stepsons Patrick Bryan of South Portland and Michael and Jeffrey Bryan of Portland; stepdaughters Maureen DeWitt of Durham and Linda Bryan of Portland; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruby Clark of Westbrook.
