Phyllis L. McGrath

VACAVILLE, Calif. - Phyllis L. McGrath, 69, of 299 Shasta Drive, and formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the La Mariposa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Fairfield, Calif.

Born Oct. 20, 1929, in Brockton, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Jenni (Brown) Southard.

Before moving to California, she was a member of the Church of Christ in Kittery.

She was a loving and supportive mother and grandmother who also shared her love with many others.

She was the wife of the late Daniel J. McGrath Sr.

Survivors include three daughters, Donna (Southard) O'Brien and Patty (McGrath) Robinson, both of Vacaville, Calif., and Barbara (McGrath) Cullen of Newburg, Ind.; two sons, Arthur Southard of Lowell, Mass., and Donald McGrath of Portsmouth; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jenni Davis of California and Barbara Kluesner of New Jersey.

Marshall Goodhue Carbee Sr.

RYE BEACH - Marshall Carbee Sr., of 21 Carbee Drive, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at his oceanside home surrounded by his family after a battle with pulmonary fibrosis.

Born in Manchester, N.H., he was the son of Earle and Louise (Goodhue) Carbee. Known to friends as "Mike," he grew up in Manchester, and attended Hebron Academy, the Tilton School and the University of New Hampshire. He also did graduate work at Boston University.

During World War II, he served in the Navy, completing 12 war patrols aboard the submarine USS Sea Robin.

He was a commercial real estate investment broker with the firm he founded with wife Penelope "Poppy" Carbee in 1976. He worked with Poppy Carbee and Associates Inc. as a broker and consultant until his death. He held his broker's real estate licenses in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

He was a member of the Exchange Club, the National Realtors Exchange, was a president and a founder of Swimmers Inc., and a founder of the Opera League of New Hampshire. He also served on the board of the Hearing Aid Society of New Hampshire.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman and skier. He also enjoyed traveling, having visited all but one state and more than 30 countries.

He was proud of his war service. A prized possession from those years was a letter slipped to him by a Japanese prisoner of war rescued by the submarine crew. Composed in Japanese and Korean, the letter thanked him for his kindness and extended wishes for a wonderful life.

In addition to his wife Poppy, survivors include a son, Marshall Jr. of Rye Beach; two daughters, Nanci Crosbie of New York City and Melissa Clark of Barnstead, N.H.; and two granddaughters, Amelia and Autumn Clark of Barnstead.

He was predeceased by a son, Jonathan Carbee.

Harry L. Leavitt

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Harry L. Leavitt, 92, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the Colonial Columns in Colorado Springs, Colo.

He was born Aug. 22, 1906, in Canaan, N.H.

He was the husband of Pauline (Story) Leavitt of Colorado Springs.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Robert Leavitt of Sanford, Fla.; two stepsons, Robert Emery of Florida and Frank Leavitt of Colorado Springs; and a sister, Pauline Levensaler of Concord, N.H.

Wlhemnina Richardson

RICHARDSON - Wilhelmina A. Richardson, 75, of York Harbor, Maine, died May 18, 1999. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, 1999, in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Dexter, Maine.

Frances J. Billingsley

LAS VEGAS - Frances J. "Midge" (Farrington) Billingsley, 72, formerly of Peabody and Salem, Mass., died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at her home after a long period of illness.

Born in Jay, Maine, she studied at Wilton Academy in Wilton, Maine, and graduated with honors. She was a 1949 graduate of Farmington State Teachers College (University of Maine at Farmington). She was a summer resident of York Beach.

She spent more than 40 years in education. She taught in Beverly, Mass., Stamford, Conn., Farmingdale, N.Y., and Falmouth, Maine. After retiring, she taught student teachers at the University of Las Vegas.

While living in Peabody, she was a communicant and CCD teacher at St. John the Baptist Church.

She was the wife of William "Buzzy" Billingsley for 42 years.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Barnaby of Las Vegas and Beauregard of San Francisco; two daughters, Belinda Fishbein of Seabrook and Brandy Irish of Salem, Mass.; five sisters, Glenda, Sharon and Barbara Farrington, all of Jay, Maine, Norma Tenney of Livermore Falls, Maine, and Virginia Sawtelle of Winthrop, Maine; two brothers, Wayne of Gray, Maine, and Maynard of Jay, Maine; and four grandchildren.

Mabel E. Donini

KITTERY - Mabel E. Donini, 85, of Route 1, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the Homestead Nursing Home, Kittery.

Born Jan. 15, 1914, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Frank M. and Ethel N. (Frothingham) Kent, and attended local schools.

She enjoyed doing crafts, especially crochet, which she would give to family and friends.

She was the wife of the late Michael Donini.

Survivors include a son, Richard H. James of Eliot, Maine; a stepson, James Donini of Pittsfield, N.H.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Norman Kent and Charles Kent; and a sister, Doris Copeland.

John Gloor

GLOOR - John E. "Jack" Gloor, 67, of Parsons Road, Rye, died June 9, 1999. At his request, a gathering for family and friends in celebration of his life will be held at noon, Sunday, June 27, at his home, 200 Parsons Road, Rye.

Gail Mondene

PORTSMOUTH - Gail (Malone) Mondene, 58, of 21 Brewster St., died Thursday, June 24, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.

Born March 21, 1941, in Waltham, Mass., she was the daughter of the late John and Rosemarie (Ellery) Malone. She was a resident of Portsmouth for the past four years.

Survivors include two sons, Lauri Mondene of Eliot, and Eric Mondene of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Rosemarie Wilder of Alabama; a brother, John Malone of Newtonville, Mass.; a sister, Marlene Murray of Weston, Mass.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Leo and James Malone.

John W. Jacobs II

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - John W. Jacobs II, 74, of West Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Ogunquit, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999.

Born Aug. 14, 1924, in Ogunquit, he was the son of Reginald F. and Jennie L. (Hilton) Jacobs. He was a 1941 graduate of Wells High School.

A Navy veteran, he served during World War II.

He was the owner of the Ogunquit Garage until his retirement in 1978.

He was a member of the Ocean Lodge No. 142, AF & AM, and York County Shrine Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason in the Kora Temple of Lewiston. For more than 55 years, he was a member of the Ogunquit Volunteer Fire Company.

He was the husband of the late Jane I. (Horning) Jacobs, who died Dec. 30, 1991.

Survivors include a son, John W. Jacobs III of Wells; two stepdaughters, Pamela J. Burton of Wiscasset, Maine, and Cheryl M. Allen of Wells; three grandsons; four granddaughters; and one nephew.

He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Everson, who died July 13, 1989.

There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held in the near future, date to be announced.

Alice Skinner

YORK - Alice E. Skinner, 89, of 31 Scotland Bridge Road, York, widow of Charles E. Skinner, died June 18, 1999, in York.

Memorial service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the First Parish Church, 178 York St., York. Memorial donations may be made to the York Hospital Volunteer Transportation or York Hospital Home Care, 15 Hospital Drive, York, ME 03909. Arrangements by the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home.

Harry H. Brown

HAMPTON - Funeral services for Harry H. Brown, 91, of White Hall Road, Rochester, were held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth G. Lawrence, pastor at First Baptist Church, Hampton Falls, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Burial followed in Center Cemetery, Rye, with committal prayers offered by the Rev. Lawrence. Pallbearers were Steve Peterson, John Brooks, Mark Vatcher, Mike Daigle, Sam Daigle and Jody Donovan.

Maybelle E. Donini

KITTERY - Maybelle E. Donini, 85, of Route 1, died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the Homestead Nursing Home, Kittery.

Phyllis L. McGrath

VACAVILLE, Calif. _ Funeral services for Phyllis L. McGrath, 69, of 299 Shasta Drive, and formerly of Portsmouth, were held from Buckminster Chapel in Portsmouth yesterday. Jon Dillinger, minister of the Church of Christ in Kittery, officiated. Words of remembrance were given by her daughter, Donna (Southard) O'Brien, and granddaughter Melissa Robinson.

Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, with committal services by the minister, Jon Dillinger.

Bearers were Jack Donnell, Monte Cullen, Mikey Chirila, Wallace Tidwell, John Kluesner and John Bertrand.

Dorothy B. Withey

TUCSON, Ariz. _ Dorothy B. Withey, 82, former longtime resident of Portsmouth, died June 23, 1999, in Tucson.

She was the wife of James T. Withey.

In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Robert Merrill and Richard Merrill; two daughters, Barbara Ehnes and Marjorie Crook; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Leonard A. Merrill Jr.

The family will hold private services.

Marguerite A. Kelly

RYE - The funeral for Marguerite A. Kelly, 84, of 496 Wallis Road was held yesterday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Theresa Church, Rye Beach. The Rev. Maurice Levigne, pastor, was the celebrant. Judy Kish was organist and pianist. Salvatore DiVincenzo was acolyte. The readings were offered by Laura Lee Kelly and Michael DeRocco. The pall was placed on the casket by Mrs. Kelly's three children, Richard Kelly, Nancy Kelly and Joan Kelly. Burial was in Central Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Levigne. Pallbearers were George McCarthy, Richard Kelly, Michael DeRocco and Paul Kelly.

Clyde F. McKay Jr.

EXETER - Clyde F. McKay Jr., 72, of 1 Douglass Way, died Friday, June 25, 1999, at the Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.

Born March 24, 1927, in Dover, he was the son of the late Clyde F. and Kathleen E. (Robinson) McKay Sr. He attended local schools, and the University of New Hampshire.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Philippines as a radar operator and an MP patrol officer.

He graduated from an apprentice program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he worked many years as a supervisor and ran the apprentice program.

He was a life member of the National Association of Superintendents of U.S. Naval Shore Establishments; a member of the Exeter Lions; an active participant in the Exeter Little League and the dedication of the Paul Currier Field.

His hobbies included spending time with his grandchildren; traveling, mostly to Hawaii; collecting mini-cars; and collecting hats.

He was the husband of Winnifred "Winnie" (Goodwin) McKay of Exeter.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Clyde F. McKay III of Salem, Mass., and Robert A. McKay of Exeter; four daughters, Janice A. McKay-O'Brien of Lee, Cheryl A. Wiscarva of Portsmouth, Colleen E. Schrier and Debra K. McKay, both of Exeter; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
