Margaret Josephine McNabb
EPPING - Margaret Josephine McNabb, 83, of 45 Hedding Road, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, after a long battle with cancer.
Born March 5, 1916, in Putney, Vt., she was the daughter of the late John and Minnie (Maloney) Murphy. She grew up in Watertown, Mass., and had lived in Epping for the past 56 years.
She had worked for the Raymond Head Start Program and also Essex Manufacturing Inc. in Newmarket.
A devoted Catholic, she was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Epping.
She was the wife of the late Chester P. McNabb, who died in 1979.
Survivors include seven children, Theresa Hughes of Billerica, Mass., Mary Mann of Kokomo, Ind., Claire Fickett, Phillip McNabb, Catherine LaFrenier, Michael McNabb and Anne Marie McNabb, all of Epping; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Ellen Landry of Medford, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Constance E. Stimac
PORTSMOUTH - Constance Elder Stimac, 77, of 1190 South St., died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, at her home.
Born Oct. 10, 1921, in Lynnfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Maude Barrett and Edward Mahlon Elder. She was a 1942 graduate of Tufts University with a bachelor's degree in economics, and a 1972 graduate of the University of New Hampshire with a master's of education degree in library science.
She was most recently office manager at the Exeter League of NH Craftsmen, where she worked for more than a decade. Her volunteer work included the Girl Scouts, the Portsmouth Library, A Safe Place, and The United Way. She was also a Red Cross blood donor.
Her interests were extensive; she loved to travel, fly, read, learn, knit, sew, and to share and enrich the lives of others.
Survivors include her daughter, Jennifer Stimac, Larry Howe and Kodiak, with whom she resided; her daughter Thane and Peter Butt; a sister, Priscilla Swartzwelder; two granddaughters, Elizabeth and Victoria Butt of Shelburne, Vt.; and Jennifer's and Thane's father, Frank Stimac of Laconia, N.H.
She was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Ruth Kairevich, and a brother, Edward Emerson Elder II.
John R. Chapman Sr.
MELBOURNE, Fla. - The Rev. John Rea Chapman Sr., died Sunday, May 23, 1999, at his home in Melbourne after a period of failing health.
He was born May 27, 1908, in Boston. He was a 1930 graduate of Williams College, and a 1933 graduate of the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He began his ministry as pastor of the First Congregational Church in Asheville, N.C. After serving there for six years, he accepted a position at the Prospect Congregational Church in Cambridge, Mass. In 1946, he was called to the Pilgrim Congregational Church of Leominster, Mass., and served there for nearly 17 years. He then served as pastor of the Payson Park Church, UCC, in Belmont, Mass., for 14 years.
In 1951, he was chosen by the National Council of Churches to be an exchange preacher under the British Council of Churches, under which he preached in 20 churches. As a former chairman of the New England Heifer Project, "Cowboy" Chapman accompanied shipments on dairy cattle to countries in Europe, South America and the Near East.
In 1977, he and his wife retired to their farm in Sandown, N.H., and he served as interim minister with churches in Manchester, Raymond and Atkinson through the State Conference.
In September 1981, he came to Lee Church Congregational as interim minister. He worked to strengthen the church by increasing church membership, presiding over the construction and installation of the church tower and steeple, and encouraging the growth of the choir. He and his wife reluctantly decided to fully retire in 1990.
He was the husband of Deanna Jo (McCurry) Chapman.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, John R. Chapman Jr. of Reno, Nev.
Robert S. Hawkins
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - A graveside service for Robert S. Hawkins, 61, formerly of Belmont, N.H. and Exeter, who died Tuesday, July 6, 1999, was held today in the Hampton (Va.) Veterans Memorial Gardens.
Born in Slater, S.C., he was the son of Stanley and Dorothy Hawkins of Newport News, Va. He had been a resident of Williamsburg for two years.
He had been employed with Laconia Peoples Bank and Trust before establishing Bob Hawkins Realty.
A member of the New Hampshire General Court for 14 years, he chaired the House Executive Departments and Administration Committee for two years and the Labor, Industrial and Rehabilitation Services Committee for the next 10 years. Committed to childhood education, he lead the fight for public kindergarten.
His numerous legislative awards include the Friend of Education Award, the highest award given by NEA-NH; and commendations from the Firefighters of New Hampshire, the Policemen's Association and the State Employees Association.
He held the office of national director of the N.H. Jaycees, and received numerous awards in Virginia and New Hampshire, including Outstanding Jaycee of the Year, Outstanding State Officer, and the highest Jaycee award, the J.C.I. He was an active member of the Laconia/Gilford and Exeter Lions clubs, where he received the Melvin Jones Award, the highest Lions International award. He held many different offices on the Lions Camp Pride board of directors, including that of president. He also served as president of The Lakes Region Toastmasters Club, Lakes Region United Way and United Way of New Hampshire, and as vice chair for the N.H. March of Dimes.
In addition to his parents, survivors include two sons, Robert S. Hawkins Jr. of Athens, Ga., and Joseph T. Hawkins of Boston; a sister, Debbie Compton and her husband, Ricky, of Newport News; several nieces and nephews; and his significant other, Barbara Young, of Exeter.

Jane B. Conant
PORTSMOUTH - Jane B. Conant, of 154 South St., died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at her home.
Born July 8, 1927, in Boston, she was the only child of Harry W. and Madeleine J. (Conant) Conant. She attended Boston public schools, was a member of the Class of 1949 at the University of New Hampshire, and a graduate of Leland Powers School of Radio and Theater in Boston.
Prior to moving to Portsmouth in 1986, she had a home in Mont Vernon, N.H., for more than 50 years.
An active member of Mont Vernon life, she was the first woman selectman; served as a Daland Memorial Library trustee; and was on the Historic District and Lamson Farm commissions. She was a founding member of the Purgatory Players, an amateur theater group of the 1960s.
Marjorie L. MacDormand
HAMPSTEAD - Marjorie L. MacDormand, 60, of 40 Bricketts Mill Road, died Thursday, July 8, 1999, at Parkland Medical Center in Derry.
Born Dec. 13, 1938, in Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of Lillis (Freeman) MacDormand of North Hampton and the late Kenneth F. MacDormand. She resided in Hampstead for the past 12 years, moving from Concord and, before that, North Hampton.
In addition to her mother, survivors include five brothers, Allister F. MacDormand of Bethel, Maine, H. Bruce MacDormand of North Hampton, Malcolm L. MacDormand of New Durham, N.H., Royce D. MacDormand of Hampton, and Eric W. MacDormand of North Hampton; one sister, Maxine Smith of Nova Scotia; and several nieces and nephews.
Harry S. Kulp
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Harry S. Kulp, 93, of 143 Rogers Road, Meeting House Village, Kittery, were held Wednesday from Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with services at Bethany Congregational Christian Church. The Rev. D. Jeffrey Dietrich, pastor, officiated.
Soloist was Justin Yim. Organist was Jan Stover. Words of remembrance were given by Audrey Link, daughter of the deceased; Kirby Link, grandson; the Rev. Dennis Marasco of Bethany Congregational Church; and the Rev. Donald Gum, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Portsmouth.
In attendance were members of the church; representatives from Meeting House Village; the Seacoast Men's Discussion Group; and family, friends and neighbors.
Burial was in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Dietrich. Bearers were Ronnie Kulp, son of the deceased; Jay Link II and Kirby Link, grandsons; Adrian Link and Connor Link, great-grandsons; and Mark Brenner and James Marchese, friends.
Ruth I. Bowden
KITTERY - Ruth I. Bowden, 81, of 2 Lemont Lane, died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at the Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.
Born Sept. 2, 1917, in Newport, N.H., she was the daughter of James E. and Carrie G. (Hurd) Crawford.
She was a member of the Nazarene Church of Eliot. She was an excellent homemaker and an especially good cook.
She was the wife of Henry Bowden Sr. for 58 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a son, Henry Bowden Jr. of Kittery; and many nieces and nephews.
William H. Eckhart
GREENLAND William H. Eckhart, 82, of 100 Post Road, died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at his home.
Born Oct. 22, 1916 in Newfoundland, N.J., he was the son of the late Harry S. and Mary L. (Van de Mark) Eckhart. He was a 1934 graduate of South Kingstown High in Wakefield, R.I., a 1938 graduate of Rhode Island State College, a 1964 graduate of George Washington University, and a 1964 graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.
He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for 35 years, serving as chief design engineer from 1958 to 1967. In 1967, he was first chief engineer of Pera.
He received the Distinguished Civilian Service Award in 1962, and the Superior Civilian Award in 1973.
He was a past master of the Naval Lodge No. 184 AF & AM of Kittery, a member of the Maine Royal Arch Chapter No. 73 of Kittery, a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and a life member of NARFE.
He was the husband of Theresa Jean (Oakes) Eckhart for 58 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Thomas William Eckhart of Portsmouth, and Robert Charles Eckhart of Reseda, Calif.; two grandsons, Aaron Richards of Burlington, Vt., and Justin B. Richards of Honolulu; a son-in-law, Peter B. Richards of Bradford, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Olive Eckhart Richards, and a sister, Frances Eckhart.
Christopher J. Madrigal
WICHITA FALLS, Texas _ Christopher J. Madrigal, 24, of Dayton Street, Wichita Falls, Texas, died Wednesday, July 7, 1999, at the Sheppard Air Force Base Hospital.
Born May 25, 1975, in Limestone, Maine, he was the son of Albert and Mary Sue (Kelly) Madrigal. He was a 1993 graduate of the Rome Free Academy in Rome, N.Y., and a 1997 graduate of Northern Arizona State University in Flagstaff, Ariz.
He was employed as a Civilian Youth Services director for the Air Force in Wichita Falls, Texas. He enjoyed all sports, music and the Spanish language.
In addition to his parents of Leominster, Mass., survivors include six sisters, Kimberly Cournoyer of Rome, N.Y., Regina Madrigal, Catherine Madrigal, Mary Madrigal, Lauren Madrigal, and Theresa Madrigal, all of Leominster, Mass.; four brothers, Keith Madrigal of Duluth, Ga., Michael Madrigal of Fitchburg, Mass., Matthew Madrigal and Justin Madrigal, both of Leominster, Mass.; his maternal grandmother, Margaret Kelly of Hudson, Mass; his paternal grandmother, Eva Madrigal of Ventor, N.J.; two nieces; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Donald A. Ring
HAMPTON - Donald A. Ring, 86, of 3 Pawnee St., died Saturday, July 10, 1999, at Exeter Healthcare.
Born Jan. 16, 1913, in Hampton, he was the son of the late Robert and Clara (Valquet) Ring. A lifelong resident of Hampton, he was a graduate of Hampton Academy.
A World War II veteran, he served in U.S. Army Air Force.
He worked as a building contractor, building houses in the Hampton area for many years. He also owned and operated the Seaside Village Motel in Hampton for 35 years and also worked as a real estate broker.
He served the town of Hampton as a selectman, was a former deputy sheriff for Rockingham County, and was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives. He was also a past president of the former Hampton Kiwanis Club and was a member of the St. James Lodge No. 102 F. & A.M. and Scottish Rite of N.H.
After his retirement, he wintered in Florida for many years.
He was the husband of Olive W. (Wood) Langley Ring for 52 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, John A. Ring and his wife, Charlotte, of Hampton; a stepson, E. Errol Langley and his wife, Vicki, of Vero Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Donald L. Ring, and a brother, Robert Ring.
John Jacobs
A memorial service for John W. Jacobs II, who passed away on June 22, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 16, 1999, at the Ogunquit Baptist Church on Shore Road, Ogunquit. Burial to follow at Locust Grove Cemetery on Shore Road in Ogunquit.

George P. Petrou
BELMONT, Calif. - George "Lucky" Pericles Petrou, 90, died Sunday, July 11, 1999, at Menlo Park Place in Menlo Park, Calif.
Born Nov. 25, 1908, in Metsovo, Epirus, Greece, he was the son of Pericles and Vassilaki (Casanna) Petrou. He came to the United States at the age of 10, and settled with his parents in Nashua, N.H. He lived in Dover until the late 1970s. He was a graduate of Brown University with a degree in metallurgy.
He worked as an engineer for General Electric Corp.; was the business and sales manager for N.H. Provision Co.; and was well known to many local residents as the owner of the Ramble-In Diner in Dover.
A member of the Cocheco Country Club, he was a past president of the New Hampshire Senior Golfers Association. He was also an organizer and longtime member of the Kanata Club, a Greek men's organization in Dover.
He was a communicant of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Dover and the Church of the Holy Cross in Belmont.
He was the husband of the late Glika "Gail" (Gima) Petrou, who died in January 1976.
Survivors include two daughters, Valerie Petrou Roumeliotes and her husband, Demetrius, of Belmont, and Janis Petrou of Hampton; a granddaughter, Stefanie Roumeliotes of Belmont; a sister, Maria Zegras of Rye, N.Y.; a sister-in-law, Alexandra Getshier of Dover; a brother-in-law, Peter Lafazanis of Nashua; and several nieces and nephews.
Faye M. Boyd
KITTERY - Faye Marie Boyd, 54, of 6 Cutts Road No. 76, died Tuesday, July 13, 1999, at Brighton Medical Center in Portland after a brief period of illness.
Born Aug. 16, 1944, in Mars Hill, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Lambert L. and Doris (Davenport) Boyd. She grew up and attended schools in Mars Hill, graduating from Mars Hill High School. She moved to the Seacoast area in 1986, after living in the Manchester area. She resided in Kittery for the last few years.
She and her husband enjoyed collecting antiques.
She was the wife of Thomas W. Carlyle for more than 13 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, Terry Grenier and Lisa Grenier, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Lambert Boyd Jr. of Mars Hill; four sisters, Judy Aldrich of Lisbon, Maine, Claudia Pipes of Topsham, Maine, Lori White of Easton, Maine, and Sheila Brewer of New Brunswick; a grandson, Christopher Boyd Duhan of Hampton Falls; and a great-granddaughter.
