Alice Buck
ROCHESTER - Alice Buck, 84, formerly of No. 5 Willowbrook Apartments, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.
Born Dec. 29, 1914, in Somersworth, she was the daughter of the late Constantinos and Vasiliki (Despoutopoulos) Seccus. She resided in this area for most of her life.
She had worked at the Hubbard Shoe Factory in Rochester. From 1987 to 1983, she worked at St. Charles Children's Home, and before that helped in the kitchen at Spaulding High School.
She was a member of the Church of the Redeemer of Rochester.
She was the wife of the late Kenneth C. Buck, who died in 1983.
Survivors include two sons, Keith C. Buck of Rochester, and Kevin C. Buck of Grandbury, Texas; a daughter, Brenda Boulanger of Rochester; four grandchildren, Amanda Spear of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Clint Boulanger of Rochester, and Megan and Levi Buck of Grandbury; a great-granddaughter, Allison Spear of Florida; and two nieces and two nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Christos Seccus; and two sisters, Sally Hosser and Jenny Clark.
Harold S. Hemstreet
NORTH HAMPTON - Harold S. Hemstreet, 79, of Little Boars Head, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Sept. 25, 1919, in Ilion, N.Y., he was the son of the late Adelbert S. and Emma L. (Schultz) Hemstreet. He was a graduate of Ilion High School and of the Engineering School of the University of Cincinnati in Ohio. He had lived in the Seacoast since 1991, coming from Wilton, Conn.
During World War II, he was a lieutenant in the Navy, assigned to the radiation lab at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He was vice president of the Perkin-Elmer Corp. of Norwalk, Conn., manufacturers of electro-optical instruments, retiring in 1985 after 31 years with the company. He was the recipient of the annual "Semmy Award" from the Semiconductor Equipment and Materials Institute Inc.; the Apollo Achievement Award from NASA; and the Alan Gordon Memorial Award by the Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers.
He also worked for 10 years for Link Aviation of Binghamton, N.Y., where he was involved in the design of helicopter flight simulators.
He was a member of the Abenaqui Country Club in Rye Beach.
He was the husband of Jean (McMillan) Hemstreet for 55 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Nancy H. Eaton of Glastonbury, Conn., and Katherine Hemstreet of Boston; two granddaughters, Heather Jean Eaton of Vernon, Conn., and Kristin Carroll Eaton of Glastonbury; a sister, Marion Manion of Brewster, Mass.; two nieces and a nephew.
Elisabeth N. Bryant
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Miss Elisabeth N. Bryant, 95, of 117 North Road, Brentwood, and formerly of 7 Tanner St., Portsmouth, were held at Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, on Thursday.
The Rev. Lillian Buckley, interim pastor of the Middle Street Baptist Church in Portsmouth, officiated.
Members of the Middle Street Baptist Church and representatives from the Rivermouth Chapter No. 54 attended.
Burial was in Proprietors Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. Buckley.
Janora O. Robinson
PORTSMOUTH - Mrs. Janora (Owens) Robinson, 66, of 38 Dennett St., died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at her home.
Born June 1, 1933, in Fredericksburg, Va., she was the daughter of James and Virginia (Ennis) Owens.
She had worked at the Susse Chalet in Portsmouth.
She was a member of the Daughter of ISIS, Ferzzan Chapter No. 7 in Minneapolis; the Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6, American Legion; and a lifetime member of the Emerson Hovey Post No. 168 Women's Auxiliary, VFW, of Portsmouth.
She was the wife of Raymond K. Robinson.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Warren Robinson of Manchester, N.H., and Keith Robinson of Salt Lake City; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Sarah Robinson, both of Salt Lake City; three sisters, Mary Jackson, Kate Daniels, and Margaret Carter, all of Fredericksburg, Va.; one brother, James Owens of Fredericksburg; one daughter-in-law, Jacqueline Yeager Robinson of Salt Lake City; Samuel Jackson and Donald Carter, both of Fredericksburg, and Horace Robinson of St. Pedro, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Narcissus Ford of Port Chester, N.Y., and Alberta Robinson of Spotsylvania, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Earl W. Spinney
ALFRED, Maine - Earl W. "Bucky" Spinney, 74, of Clark Road, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, at the Maine Medical Center in Portland following a brief period of illness.
Born Aug. 3, 1925, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Forrest E. and Florence (Chandler) Spinney. After attending schools in both Portsmouth and Eliot, Maine, he moved to Alfred where he spent the remainder of his life.
He was employed by various dairies in New Hampshire and Maine, including Badger Farms Creameries in Portsmouth, Emery's Dairy in Kittery Point, Chabot's Dairy in Somersworth, and Clover Leaf Farms in Haverhill, Mass. He also worked at the former Nasson College in Springvale and Cohen Egg Farm in Dayton, Maine.
A member of the Alfred Congregational Church, he was a former deacon and president of the Men's Club. He was also a member and past president of the Parents' Club of the Alfred Elementary School.
He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Sperry) Spinney, who died in May 1999.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Currier of Raymond, and Sybil Howe of Kennebunk; two sisters, Charlotte Mortgridge of Eliot and Mae Relea of Florida; and four grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by three brothers.
Richard E. Rezendes
EXETER - Richard E. Rezendes, 49, of 16 Oaklands Road, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at his home.
Born May 16, 1950, in Brookline, Mass., he was the son of Edward F. and Theresa M. (O'Connor) Rezendes of Haverhill, Mass. He was raised in Brookline and was a graduate of Brookline High School. He attended the Peterson School of Steam Engineering of Boston, and the Associated Technical Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning in Woburn, Mass.
He served in the Navy as a launch and recovery technician aboard the aircraft carriers USS Wasp and USS Intrepid.
For more than 20 years he worked for the Exeter Hospital, first in the boiler building and recently as the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning technician.
He was a member and past president of the Exeter Hospital bowling league; was a soccer coach for the Exeter Recreation Department and a baseball coach for both the Junior and Babe Ruth leagues; and was an avid hunter.
He was the husband of Theresa J. (Elliot) Rezendes for 17 years.
In addition to his wife and parents, survivors include three sons, Todd C. Dunphy of Hampton Falls, Michael E. Rezendes and Timothy L. Rezendes, both of Exeter; a daughter, Jennifer T. Scribner and her husband, Ryan, of Exeter; two grandchildren, Ryan-John Scribner and Zachary Scribner, both of Exeter; a brother, Robert M. Rezendes of Haverhill; two sisters, Kathleen T. Rezendes of Haverhill, and Diane T. Rezendes of Jamaica Plain, Mass.; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Alberta A. Frisbee
HAMPTON - Alberta Adams Frisbee, 103, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999, at the Seacoast Health Center in Hampton.
Born on April 6, 1896, she was the daughter of Albert H. Adams and Maud Trefethern Adams. She lived in Portsmouth most of her life, residing in North Hampton with her grandson during her later years.
For many years she worked as a seamstress for French's and Kimball's department stores in Portsmouth.
She was the wife of the late Joseph Elliot Frisbee.
Survivors include a son, Joseph O. Frisbee of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two grandsons, Shaun Berry of Wolfeboro Falls, N.H., and Jeffry Berry of Adrian, Mich.; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two daughters, Alberta Berry and Judith Maguire.
Karen F. Ashburn
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Karen F. (Batchelder) Ashburn, 51, of 878 Bigelow Road, Lebanon, Maine, were held on Thursday at the Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. William Gardei officiated. Mrs. Ashburn's son, William Ashburn, gave words of remembrance.
In attendance were representatives from the Emerson Hovey Post No. 168 Women's Auxiliary, VFW, and Frank Booma Unit 6, American Legion.
Burial will be in the Wenham Cemetery in Wenham, Mass.
American Legion services were held Wednesday evening at the chapel by Frank E. Booma Unit No. 6, including Brenda Walton, president; Betty Sanford, chaplain; Shirley Williams, acting chaplain; June Daly, P.D.P.; Ella Studrance, P.P.; Renne Studrance, Cheatham; Elease Gray; Carl Walton, past Post No. 6 commander; Karyl Horn, color guard; and Patricia Belliville, color guard.
Ronald E. MacInnis
KITTERY - Ronald E. MacInnis, 41, of 5 Commercial St., died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, following a period of illness.
Born March 10, 1958, in Portsmouth, he was the son of John and Tsuyako (Chiba) MacInnis. He attended local schools and was a 1976 graduate of Portsmouth High School.
He was a member of St. James Church, the National Rifle Association and the Rod and Gun Club in North Hampton. A lifelong resident of the area, he worked as a self-employed carpenter.
In addition to his parents, survivors include two brothers, John J. MacInnis of South Berwick, and Richard MacInnis of Portsmouth; a sister, Margaret Book of Bangor, Wash.; godparents Mr. and Mrs. Phil Soave of Stratham; many aunts, uncles, cousins and a niece.
Anna M. Fay
NEWBURY, Mass. - Anna M. Fay, 87, of 6 Riverfront Road, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, at her home.
Born April 10, 1912, in Salem, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Nellie (Eagan) Fay.
She was a retired supervisor for the New England Telephone Company in Salem, Mass.
Survivors include a niece, Susan Fleming of Newbury; a nephew, Hugh Fleming of Portsmouth; and several other nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and James Fay; and two sisters, Mary Fleming and Katherine Hunter.
John R. Mitchell
NASHUA - John R. Mitchell, 35, of 28 Abbott St., died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
Born March 27, 1964, in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of William J. Mitchell Jr. of Atkinson, N.H., and Sandra (Margeson) Mitchell of North Andover, Mass. He was raised in Lawrence and attended local schools. He received his high school diploma from San Diego City College.
He was a system support engineer for Sun Micro Systems of Burlington, Mass. He also worked for Stateline Tack in Plaistow, N.H.
He was a Navy veteran, serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.
He was the husband of Laurie A. (Eaton) Mitchell for one year.
In addition to his wife and his parents, survivors include a brother, William J. Mitchell III, of Lawrence, his stepmother, Norma Mitchell, of Atkinson; his paternal grandfather, William J. Mitchell Sr., of Salem, N.H.; and several aunts, nieces, and nephews.
Charles M. Scripture
MANCHESTER - Charles M. Scripture, 92, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, at his daughter's home in North Hampton.
Born July 30, 1907, in Keene, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Delhia (Neeves) Scripture. He was a graduate of Keene High School. He lived in Marlboro, Mass. for many years before moving to Portsmouth.
He and his wife operated Concannon & Scripture, a stationery and gift store located on Market and Vaughn streets, from 1946 to 1964. Upon retirement in 1974, he and his wife moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where he was a member of the New Smyrna Yacht Club and was active with the Little Theatre of New Smyrna Beach. In 1994, he moved to Hillcrest Terrace, a retirement community in Manchester.
He was a member of the United Church of Christ in North Hampton; a member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club since 1946; United Brethren Lodge of Marlboro, Mass.; Washington Royal Arch Chapter No. 3, Davenport Council No. 5 of Royal and Select Masters, Commandry No. 2; Knights Temple; and Bektash Shrine.
He was the husband of Ann (Brown) Scripture for 69 years. She died in February.
Survivors include two daughters, Bettiann Donahue and her husband, Daniel, of North Hampton, and Roberta M. Tidman and her husband, Edward, of Holden, Mass.; five grandchildren, Stephen Wade of Turner, Maine, Bettiann McKay of Acton, Mass., Kathi Donahue Mann of Rochester, Sharyn Nault of North Hampton, and Holly Donahue of Portsmouth; and six great-grandchildren.
Frances V. Berry
HAMPTON - The funeral for Frances V. Berry, 84, former longtime resident of Hampton, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. Daniel Sinibaldi, associate pastor, was the celebrant.
Nelson K. Ward was organist, and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. William Pray, Edward Wakeen and Paul Lemoine were acolytes.
Sister Doris Ouellette, CSC, offered a reading, and the general intercessions were offered by Sister Theresa Malouin, CSC.
Burial followed in the High Street Cemetery, with committal service conducted by the Rev. Sinibaldi.
Louise W. Marston
HAMPTON - The funeral for Louise W. Marston, 81, former longtime resident of North Hampton, was held Saturday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. Services were conducted in the Exeter Healthcare Chapel, Exeter. The Rev. Jamie S. Moynihan, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Exeter, officiated.
Burial followed in the Center Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moynihan.
J. Philip Dunfey
PORTSMOUTH - J. Philip Dunfey, 44, of 334 Lincoln Ave., died Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at his home. Over the past several years, he had suffered complications of colon cancer and diabetes.
Born on March 12, 1955, in Exeter, he was the son of John P. Dunfey of Portsmouth and the late Joan T. (Lannon) Dunfey, who died in 1998.
He graduated from Brooks School at Andover, Mass., and had worked as an air-conditioning contractor for over 15 years.
In addition to his father, survivors include a sister, Susan B. Dunfey of Rye; two brothers, David J. Dunfey of Litchfield, Conn., and Stephen C. Dunfey of Portsmouth; two aunts, two uncles, and cousins.
