Marion L. Flynn
WEIRSDALE, FLA. - Marion L. Flynn, 83, formerly of 415 Union Ave., Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999 at her residence in Florida.
Born in Eliot, Maine on Sept. 12, 1915, she was the daughter of Henry C. and Marie (Vondal) Linscott and attended local schools.
During the war, she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She also worked at Tobers Clothing Store in Portsmouth, which later turned into Kimballs Department Store. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Portsmouth.
She was the wife of the late George F. Flynn.
Survivors include a son, Russell P. Tully, of Portsmouth; a brother, Nelson Linscott of Kittery; sisters Mildred Alessi of Portsmouth, Thelma "Tootie" LaClair of Kittery; three granddaughters, Delores Fischels of Norwich, Conn., Brenda Boudreau of Rochester, and Lisa Seward, also of Rochester. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers, Joseph, Albert, Clifton and Reginald.
John O. Byrne
KITTERY - John O. (Jack) Byrne, 68, of 9 Prince Ave., died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at his home following a brief period of illness.
Born April 14, 1931, in Pittsfield, Mass., he was the son of John and Mary (Burns) Byrne.
He served in the Air Force for 28 years and was stationed throughout the United States, Japan and the Philippines before retiring permanently in the Seacoast area in 1979.
He was the husband of Ruth (Stuesser) Byrne.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven children; Colene Byrne-Audet of Clifton Park, N.Y., JIll Plaisted of Kittery, Tim Byrne of Boston, Ellen Byrne of Magnolia, Mass., Nancy Byrne of Belmont, Mass., John M. Byrne of South Berwick, and Christopher Byrne of Newton, Mass.; four sisters, Elizabeth Giovanetti of Pittsfield, Mass., Joan Heaton of Phoenix, Kathryn Connor of Pittsfield, Mass., and Rita Drumm of Great Barrington, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; 31 nieces and nephews, and Nina Sibole of Portsmouth, his longtime companion and close friend of the family.
He is predeceased by a sister, Mary Maloy of Pittsfield, Mass., who died in 1991.
Ellen M. McCue
HAMPTON - Ellen M. McCue, 83, of Mace Road, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at Exeter Healthcare.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. July 3, 1916, she was the daughter of the late James J. and Catherine T. (O'Donnell) McCue.
She was a graduate of Bay Ridge High School in Brooklyn and also a stenotype school in Boston. She also attended the University of New Hampshire.
She worked as a Superior Court stenographer for the state of New Hampshire for 23 years, retiring in 1971 because of a disability. During World War II, she worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
She lived in Hampton since her retirement, coming from Portsmouth.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and a member of its Catholic Women's Club, a former member of the Altrusa Business Women's Club in Portsmouth and member of the Friends of the Lane Memorial Library.
Survivors include three sisters; Kathleen Lincoln of Norwalk, Conn., Rita Dufour of Baton Rouge, La., and Venita Brown of Hampton; four brothers, James J. McCue Jr. of Bar Mills, Maine, Patrick McCue of Dover, Eugene McCue of Ft. Wayne, Ind., and Dr. John McCue of St. Cloud, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Calvin Rolfe
GILFORD, N.H. - Calvin W. Rolfe, 74, of 471 Edgewater Drive, Governor's Island, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Genesis ElderCare Network, Laconia Center.
Born Oct. 17, 1924, in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of Frederick A. and Mathilda (Furoung) Rolfe. He was the youngest of three children. He attended elementary school in Jersey City until the second grade when his family moved to Lyndhurst, N.J. He graduated from Lyndhurst High School in 1942. In February 1943, he joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed in the South Pacific as a control tower operator. He was honorably discharged in March 1946.
He attended Bergen Junior College and went on to receive his bachelor's degree in economics from Rutgers in 1950, and his master's degree in education from Plymouth State College in 1952.
In 1951, he was employed in sales for the US Gypsum Co., and in 1952 was a salesman for Fuller Brush. From 1952-1953, he was the principal of the Belmont Elementary School, and from 1953-1955 he was principal at Moultonboro Central School. From 1955-1960, he was principal of the Meredith elementary schools. From 1970-1983, he was vice principal of Interlakes High School in Meredith, and was interim principal at Gilford Middle School in 1985.
He was also owner of the Country Squire Restaurant from 1954-1959; owner of the Laconia Automatic Vending Co. from 1960-1970; publisher of the Lakes Region Home Guide from 1979-1986; and Gentleman Host (Cruise Ships) from 1993-1996.
He was a member and past trustee of the Laconia Congregational Church and a friend and worshiper of the Trinity Episcopal Church-Meredith.
He was past commodore and life member of the Winnipesaukee Yacht Club; current member and a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow of the Gilford Rotary Club; past president in 1963 of the Laconia Rotary Club; member of the Meredith Rotary Club; past member of the Laconia Parks & Recreation Commission; corporator of the Lakes Region General Hospital; a charter member of the Laconia Outing Club; member and past president of the Interlakes Teachers Association; and was also a member of the National Education Association and was national delegate for New Hampshire.
He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Kramer) Rolfe, who died in 1988.
Survivors include his children, Addie Rolfe Tarbell of Rye and Thomas Winslow of Manchester; two grandchildren, Lia and Marina Tarbell; a sister, Eleanor Rolfe Henry of New Jersey; a brother, Winston Elwood Rolfe of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and a beloved companion, Carolyn Scattergood of Gilford.
Ellen McCue
McCUE - Ellen M. McCue, of Mace Road, Hampton, died Aug. 30, 1999. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 11, at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited and may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, 811 Lafayette Road, Hampton. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family requests that flowers please be omitted. If desired, donations may be made to NH Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 686, Manchester NH 03105.
Robert Shaw
EXETER - Robert Shaw, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999.
For more than 50 years, he was a New Hampshire trial lawyer and was a devoted citizen of Exeter.
He was the husband of Elizabeth Shaw.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Peg Shaw of Washington, D.C., and Ronney Nadile of Lunenburg, Mass; a brother, Moe Schneiderman of Quincy, Mass.; and five grandchildren, Amy Odom of North Potomac, Md., Matthew and Zachary Nadile of Lunenburg, Judith Katz of Chicago, and Aaron Katz of East Lansing, Mich.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Beth Katz of Michigan.
Services will be private. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Freeman J. Pearl
PHOENIX - Freeman John Pearl, 81, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at the Merriville Hospital in Phoenix after a lengthy period of illness.
Born June 27, 1918, in Loudon Ridge, N.H., he was the son of the late John and Nola (Greene) Pearl. He was raised in Loudon Ridge and attended Pittsfield High School. He moved to Arizona in 1950.
He worked for Curtis Publishing in Boston; and in Arizona, he was a self-employed landscaper until retiring in 1978.
Survivors include two brothers, Arthur E. Pearl of Portsmouth and Bernard Pearl of Las Vegas; one sister, Dorothy Page of Loudon Ridge; many nieces and nephews; and longtime friend Katherine Farrell of Phoenix.
Services will be held Sept. 11, 1999, in Phoenix.
John D. Hamilton
OKEECHOBEE, Fla. - John D. Hamilton, 79, of Buckhead Ridge, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at the Okeechobee Health Care Facility.
Born Dec. 14, 1919, in Baileyville, Maine, he was the son of the late John and Blanch Hamilton. He excelled in sports during his high school years, playing baseball, football and basketball, and received many sports awards, including the Wilder Award in 1940. He attended Oklahoma State University on a sports scholarship. He lived in Portsmouth before moving to Miami in the 1950s and retired in Buckhead Ridge in 1982.
During World War II, he served in the China, Burma and India theatres of operation, where he was injured, ending his baseball career.
He was a certified welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans in Buckhead Ridge.
He was the husband of Rita Hamilton for 33 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Jaye Hamilton and her husband, John Jerome, of Bath, Mich., and Kathy Hartsfield of Okeechobee; three granddaughters, Anna Dematais of San Francisco, and Theresa Hartsfield and Shena Hartsfield, both of Okeechobee; two grandsons, John Paul and Benjamin Jerome, both of Bath; one great-grandson; and a special niece.
He was predeceased by a son, Paul (Topper) Hamilton; and his sister, Harriet Jameson, and her husband, Walter.
The funeral will be in Florida.

Mary Jean Gleason
RYE BEACH - A memorial Mass for Mary Jean Gleason, 97, of Exeter and formerly of North Hampton, who died Aug. 30, 1999, was held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at Saint Theresa Church. The Rev. John R. Ullrich, pastor of Saint Anthony's Church, Boston, was the celebrant.
Judith Kish was the organist; Mary Louise Arcidi was the cantor; and the Rev. Robert H. Thompson, Phelps minister at Phillips Church, Exeter, was the soloist. Salvator DiVincenzo was acolyte and offered the readings. Alessandra Domina, daughter of Mrs. Gleason, offered the eulogy. Nina Domina Baker and Christian Cilluffo were ushers.
Private interment will be in St. Mary's cemetery, Northampton, Mass.

Barbara J. Maroon
HAMPTON - The funeral for Barbara J. Maroon, 68, of 32 Brookside Drive, Stratham, who died Aug. 19, 1999, was held Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. Monsignor Paul Gleason, retired priest from the Portland diocese, and the Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, were the celebrants.
Marion Arnaldy was the organist, and Patricia Mackensen was the soloist. Family and friends offered words of remembrance.
Cremation followed the Mass in the Phoenix Crematory.
Pallbearers were Robert Harkins, Robert LePage, Carlton Wass, Al Fornier, Jerry Howard and Francis Laurence.
Frederic S. Bunce
KITTERY - Frederic Standish Bunce, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover.
Born July 8, 1914, in Hartford, Conn., he was the son of Arthur and Emma Louise Standish Bunce. He graduated from Loomis in 1933 and Dartmouth College in 1937. He lived in Brewster, N.Y.; Norwalk and Wilton, Conn.; and Kittery.
For 38 months during World War II, he served in the South Pacific. A captain, he was the executive manager of the 33rd Squadron, 22nd Bombardment Group of the 5th Air Force. He served as lieutenant colonel in the Air Force Reserves for a total of 22 years of military service.
He worked for Connecticut General LIfe Insurance, Atlantic Aviation Corp., and as a district manager in the communications division of General Electric Co. until retiring in 1978.
A Mason, he served as a deacon at the Wilton Congregational Church in Connecticut. He was an active alumnus of The Loomis School and Dartmouth College, attending almost every reunion. He was also active with the Retired Officer's Organization and with General Electric retirees. For 17 years, he volunteered at the York seniors center doing tax returns.
He was the husband of Mildred Tyrol. The couple were married in 1946.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one brother, James M. Bunce of Hartford; one son, James S. Bunce of Phippsburg, Maine; two daughters, Barbara Louise Clark of Denver and Cynthia Bunce Kleeman of Bedford, N.H.; two granddaughters, Lindsay and Tracy Kleeman; two grandsons, Mathew G. Clark and Parker Barnes Bunce; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund of the First Parish Congregational Church of York.
A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced.
James D. Platt, Jr.
HAMPTON - James D. "Jidd" Platt Jr., 60, of 9 Hampton Towne Estates, died suddenly Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at his home.
Born Feb. 14, 1939, in Lawrence, Mass., he was the son of Ruth (O'Connor) Nervi of Santa Rosa, Calif., and the late James D. Platt. He was raised in Andover, Mass., and was a graduate of Andover High School, where he was a three-letter athlete. He attended the University of Connecticut on a football scholarship. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and received his master's degree in education from Salem State College. A former resident of Newburyport, Mass., he had resided in Hampton since 1988.
He served a tour with the Navy.
An educator for many years, he started his teaching career in the Watts section of Los Angeles. He served the Boxford, Mass., school system for 30 years as an elementary teacher, guidance counselor and principal of the Cole School. He was teaching at Spofford Pond School. He was also employed part time for the Hampton Police Department in dispatch as a communication specialist.
He was a life member of the National Education Association; former negotiator and career member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association; member of the Boxford Teachers Association; and longtime member of the Dalton Club in Newburyport.
He was the husband of Sheila A. (Sciaba) Platt for 14 years.
In addition to his mother and wife, survivors include one son, Daniel T. Platt and his wife, Jennifer, of Boston; two stepdaughters, Kendall Daly and her husband, Dereck, of Sharon, Mass., and Brook Dennen of San Rafael, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Betty V. Woods
ROCKPORT, Mass. - Betty (Vibert) Woods, 71, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999.
Born June 8, 1928, in Beverly Mass., she was the daughter of Helen (Nelson) Vibert of Rockport and the late L. Dana Vibert. She was a graduate of the Hampton school system and also a graduate of McIntyre Junior College in Portsmouth.
She worked at the Rockport National Bank for 14 years. She then was the owner and operator of the "Lobster-in-the-Ruff Restaurant" on Bearskin Neck, Rockport, until 1984. She worked at the Sandy Bay Shoppe on Bearskin Neck until the beginning of this year.
She was an active member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Rockport. She was a member of the Spiran Lodge No. 98, the Motif No. 1 Committee and the Rockport Christmas Tree Committee. She was a former Girl Scout Leader and a member of the Retired Adult Troop No. 92 in Rockport.
She was the wife of the late Charles W. Woods.
In addition to her mother, survivors include a daughter, Mary Helen and her husband, Glen T. MacLeod, of Rockport; a son, Dana V. "Buddy" and his wife, Mary Jo Woods, of Rockport; five grandchildren, Jennifer M. MacLeod of Rockport, Peter MacLeod of Gloucester, Justin and his wife, Danielle Mierz, of Rockport, Stefan Mierz of Rockport, Maura E. Woods of Rockport; and three great-grandchildren, Shelby-Faith MacLeod of Rockport, and Caleb and Madelyn Grace Wnorowski of Rockport.
