George R. Dawson Jr.
ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - George Richard Dawson Jr., 76, formerly of Portsmouth, died at Venice Hospital on Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, after a long period of illness.
He was born and raised in Portsmouth, and graduated from Portsmouth High School with the Class of 1941.
He served with the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Turner, a destroyer class battleship that escorted convoys across the Atlantic.
He worked as a broadcast engineer at WFSB-TV Channel 3, formerly WTIC-TV, for 33 years. He retired in 1988.
After retirement he relocated to Englewood, where he lived on a golf course.
His hobbies included golfing and still photography. His silver prints were displayed at various arts events.
He was a member of Elk's Lodge No. 2378 in Englewood.
He was the husband of Dawn (Marceau) Dawson for 54 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stephen, and his wife, Coleen, of Tennessee; two daughters, Joan Symolon and her husband, Michael, of Farmington, Conn., and Nancy Sisti of Santa Monica, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
James A. Hawkes
SARASOTA, Fla. - James A. Hawkes, 53, formerly of Newburyport, Mass., died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999.
Born Feb. 28, 1946, he was the son of Harold "Jack" Hawkes and the late Barbara Hawkes, who owned Hawkes & Sons Marina on Merrimac Street in Newburyport.
He moved to Sarasota in 1984.
In addition to his father of Seabrook, N.H., he is survived by a daughter, Joyce E. Hawkes; and a son, Anthony A. Hawkes, both of Amesbury, Mass.; three brothers, Harold W. Hawkes of Alexandria, Va., Edward A. Hawkes of Seabrook, and Kenneth L. Hawkes of Chandler, Ariz.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Ruby L. Simms
HAMPTON - Ruby Luella (Pentz) Simms, 95, of 202 Woodland Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at her home.
Born in Shelburne, Nova Scotia, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Amos and Annie May (Matthews) Pentz. She attended Mount Allison College in New Brunswick, where she majored in music and received numerous awards.
In 1924, she moved to Boston with her husband, William E. Simms. For several years, she did the bookkeeping at Simms Brothers Yacht Yard in Dorchester, Mass., a company her husband founded with his brother.
For more than 27 years she lived in Braintree, Mass. She was an active member of the Braintree Philergians, for which she served 12 years as a bell ringer and two years as a chairwoman. She was also active in various women's groups in the Braintree Baptist Church.
After the family yacht yard was taken by eminent domain by the state of Massachusetts for the southeast expressway, she and her family moved to Jacksonville, Fla., where they purchased another yacht yard. For four years, she was active in the Jacksonville Ortega Methodist Church and the Jacksonville Women's Club.
Her family returned to New England in 1961, after selling the Jacksonville yacht yard, and opened the Simms Bros. Yacht Yard in Scituate, Mass. She and her husband then settled in Peterborough, where she became president of the Peterborough Garden Club. They later moved to Hampton, where she served as president of the Salty Marsh Garden Club; and horticultural chairwoman and club therapy chairwoman of the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs. For more than two years, she rang the bells for the First Congregational Church of Hampton.
Her hobbies included gardening, hooking rugs, crewel work, and other home projects.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1986.
Survivors include her son, Harold G. Simms and his wife, Jean, of Norwell, Mass.; four grandsons; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Janet Nicholson Eaton Macomber
MACOMBER - Janet Nicholson Eaton Macomber, 95, of New Castle, N.H., and formerly of Wolfeboro, N.H., died Sept. 22, 1999. Memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at New Castle Congregational Church. H. Francis Nordahl
HAMPTON BEACH - H. Francis "Franny" Nordahl, 75, of 8 Kentville Terrace, formerly of Lexington Mass., died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at his home.
Born Nov. 19, 1923, in Braintree, Mass., he was the son of the late Henry and Lillian (Curran) Nordahl. He was a graduate of Braintree High School.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army in New Guinea with the 594th Special Boat Regiment with the 4th Engineer Special Brigade.
For more than 37 years, he worked for New England Telephone until his retirement in 1984.
He lived in Lexington, Mass., for many years and summered in Hampton Beach for several years before moving there in 1993. He wintered in the Melbourne, Fla., area.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church and a former communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Lexington.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council in Lexington, Telephone Pioneers of America, and Raymond E. Walton American Legion Post No. 70, Seabrook.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing cards.
He was the husband of the late Dorothy F. (Walton) Nordahl for 45 years.
Survivors include three sons, Stephen P. Nordahl of Blackstone, Mass., James F. Nordahl of Fort Leavenworth, Kan., and Jon R. Nordahl of Wellfleet, Mass.; four daughters, Susan DiGirolamo of Uxbridge, Mass., Kathleen Nordahl of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, Kristin A. Nordahl Gillan of Boxboro, Mass., and Mary E. O'Callaghan of Maynard, Mass.; one sister-in-law, Elizabeth Smith of Manchester, N.H.; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Cecile J. Jette
MANCHESTER - Cecile J. Jette, 98, of Manchester, formerly of Greenland, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at the Gale Home after a period of failing health.
Born Sept. 16, 1901, in Manchester, she was the daughter of Pierre and Delphine (Fontaine) Marquis. She moved to the Seacoast in 1933 and was a resident of Greenland for more than 50 years.
She was a member of St. James Church in Portsmouth, and a member of the Ave Maria Guild.
She was the wife of the late Adelbert Jette.
Survivors include three sons, Gerald Jette of Newfields, Maine, David Jette of Portsmouth, and Roger Jette of Atkinson, N.H.; five daughters, Irene Helbick of Port Charlotte, Fla., Rita Sifford of Englewood, Fla., Therese Wallingford of Dover, Camille Bersey of Fort Pierce, Fla., and Lucille French of Exeter; 52 grandchildren; more than 60 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Calix Marquis of Colorado; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sons, Donald Jette and Maurice Jette; a daughter, Rinalda Jennings; and a sister, Isabelle Brassell.
Charles C. Sprague
PORTSMOUTH - Charles C. Sprague, 90, of 928 South St., died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999, at the Edgewood Centre.
Born June 30, 1909, in Kittery, he was the son of Albert and Elizabeth (Avery) Sprague.
At the age of 16, he started working in his father's barber shop. For many years, he owned and operated Clint's Barber Shop.
In the 1940s, he enjoyed playing the drums in a local band around the Seacoast area.
He was the husband of the late Hazel R. (Page) Sprague.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Morrissey of Portsmouth; two brothers, John and Ralph Sprague, both of Kittery; two granddaughters, Kathleen A. Morrissey of Bourne, Texas, and Susan E. (Morrissey) Shannon of Eliot; three great-grandchildren; and a niece, Patricia Koravas of Rye.
He was predeceased by his former wife, Marjorie A. Gauvin.
Libby Soris
PORTSMOUTH - Libby Soris died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999. Born March 20, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Arte Trefon.
She was the wife of Christopher Soris.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a brother, Ralph (Socrates) Trefon and his wife, Anna, of Winchester, Mass.; two sisters, Donna Alexson and her husband, James, of Lexington, Mass., Angela Daskalos and her husband, Charles, of Watertown, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Olive M. Langley Ring
HAMPTON - The funeral for Olive M. Langley Ring, 87, of 3 Pawnee St., was held Thursday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Kenneth G. Lawrence, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hampton Falls, officiated. Jean Goss was organist and Jay Halloran was soloist. Eastern Star services were also conducted by Orient Chapter O.E.S No. 22 of Exeter.
Libby Soris
PORTSMOUTH - Libby (Trefon) Soris died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999.
Born March 20, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Arte Trefon.
She was the wife of Christopher Soris.

Ruby L. Simms
HAMPTON - The funeral for Ruby L. Simms, 95, of 202 Woodland Road, was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church, Hampton, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Words of remembrance were offered by her son, Harold G. Simms, and her grandson, David Simms. Burial followed in High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with committal services conducted by the Rev. Moore. Pallbearers were David Simms, Paul Simms, William Simms, and Nathan Simms.
Phillip C. Nelson
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Phillip C. "Phil" Nelson, 59, of 204 Wibird St., were held on Friday from Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with services at the North Congregational Church, Portsmouth. Officiants were the Rev. Reva Karstens, interim pastor, and the Rev. Mary Robbins of Middle Street Baptist Church. Organist was Richard Gremlitz and Wendell Purrington was soloist.
In attendance were a large delegation of former associates and students from Portsmouth High School.
Burial will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, at the convenience of the family.
Bearers were Eric Johnson, Bill Murphy, Tom Daubney, Danny Parr, George Cushing and Al Neri.
Masonic services were held Thursday at the chapel by St. Andrew's Lodge No. 56 F & AM, including Worshipful Master Brian R. Sanderson; Senior Warden Craig I. Brown; Junior Warden, Wor. Philip Fraser; Chaplain, Wor. Nelson D. Hersey; Senior Steward, Ronald Pulliam Jr.; Marshall, Wor. Edward Conway; and Tyler, Wor. Knute Lundgren. Also assisting in services were Wor. Lynn J. Sanderson; Russell Brightman; and Harold Whitehouse.
Barbara Duffy
PORTSMOUTH - Barbara Duffy, 87, of 303 Thornton St., died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at her home.
Born June 23, 1912, in Guildhall, Vt. the daughter of Fred and Celia (Ball) Ford. She was a resident of Portsmouth for the past 70 years.
Barbara was employed as a private duty Registered Nurse before her retirement. She was an active member of the St. Catherine of Siena Church and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary.
She was the husband of Melvin J. Duffy for 61 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Fred Ford and his wife, Bonnie, of Brewer, Maine and Chandler "Chan" Ford of Guildhall; a sister, Marjory Keenan of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; nieces, nephews and many friends.
Martha A. Cummings
BERWICK - Martha Ann Cummings, 64, died unexpectedly on Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at her residence.
Born on Nov. 23, 1934, in York, she was the daughter of the late Stuart and Ardell (Brooks) Chase. She attended York schools and resided with her husband and children in York Beach for over 55 years before retiring to Berwick 10 years ago.
She enjoyed sewing, cooking and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was the wife of Randall J. Cummings of Berwick for 45 years.
In addition to her husband, Martha is survived by two daughters, Sharon L. Chase of New London, N.H. and Mrs. Wayne (Susan) Patch of South Berwick, Maine; a son, Gary A. Cummings of York Beach; four brothers, Norman and Herman Chase, both of York, Richard Chase of South Berwick and Chester Chase of Cape Neddick; one sister, Sylvia Hathorne of York Beach; four grandchildren; and 23 nieces and nephews.
Gladys E. Foote
ELIOT - Gladys Emery Foote died Thursday, Sept. 23, 1999.
She was born June 27, 1901 in Lyndenborough, N.H.
Gladys was active in the Eliot Garden Club and became a member of the Maine Judges Council. She most recently held the title of Master Judge Emeritus, accredited by the National Council of Federated Garden Clubs.
She was the husband of late Wells D. Foote for 46 years.
Survivors include five children, Lois Ann Oliver of Portsmouth, Wells D. Foote Jr. and his wife, Leona, of Lyndenborough, Hubert E. Foote and his wife, Luciana, of Seminole County, Fla., Emery B. Foote and his wife, Norma, of Hernando Beach, Fla. and Harlan B. Foote and his wife, June, of Renton, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was residing in the home of her care givers at the time of her death.
