Marjorie L. (Chick) Boardman
GREENLAND - A Celebration of Life service was held at the Greenland Community Church on Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in memory of Marjorie L. (Chick) Boardman. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor, conducted the service.
Her son, Raymond W. Boardman, along with a poem written and read by her granddaughter, Courtney Boardman, gave special reflections. A special message sent to the family from former pastor of the church, the Rev. Jim Fredette and his family, was read by her daughter-in-law, Tracy Boardman.
In attendance were members of the Greenland Community Church, The Women's Alliance, the Middle Street Baptist Church, members of the Portsmouth High School Class of 1945, and the Reunion Committee members. Also attending were former workers of the Greenland and Portsmouth food service programs, and Simplex Technologies.
A reception was held at the Church Parish Hall after the service.
Burial was held at Brooks Memorial Cemetery on Thursday.
Margaret P. Sullivan
GARDEN CITY BEACH, S.C. - Margaret Patricia Sullivan of Garden City Beach, S.C., died Thursday Sept. 30, 1999 at her home.
She was born in Boston Mass. the daughter of the late John and Margaret O'Hara Darcy. She was the wife of the late Eugene L. Sullivan.
Mrs. Sullivan is survived by two sons, Eugene L. Sullivan, Jr. of Hampton, N.H. and John G. Sullivan of Portsmouth, N.H.; a daughter, Patricia M. Sullivan of Columbia, S.C.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one nephew, John Darcy of Kingston, N.H.
Rhoda A. Brown
SEABROOK - The funeral for Rhoda A. Brown, 85, of 63 Washington St., was held Friday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. Services were conducted in the Trinity United Church. The Rev. Diane Pierce, pastor, officiated. Cynthia L. Brown was organist and Robert Beal was soloist. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Pierce. Pallbearers were Alick Eaton, Jr.; Dean Bergeron; Donald Bergeron, Jr.; Rick Condon; Leigh Condon; and Harry Bergeron. Order of Eastern Star services were conducted Monday evening at the funeral home by Orient Chapter No. 22 of Exeter. Grange services were conducted by Hampton Falls Grange No. 171 and Auxiliary American Legion services were conducted by the Raymond E. Walton Post, Unit 70.
William J. Sugrue
DOVER - William J. Sugrue, 75, of 37 Surrey Run, Hampton, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 1999 at his home.
He was born Dec. 10, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of the late Frank J. and Gertrude (McFadden) Sugrue.
Mr. Sugrue was a 1941 graduate of South High School, Worcester, Mass. and a graduate of Georgetown University of Foreign Service, Washington, D.C. He lived in Needham, Mass for most of his life before moving to Hampton in 1987. He moved to Dover in July.
He was a deputy commissioner of Commerce and Development or the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army.
Mr. Sugrue was a communicant of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Hampton; a member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Brady Council 5093 of Hampton; St. Mary's Assembly 4th degree Knights of Columbus, Portsmouth; a member of the Holy Name Society and a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, both of Hampton.
He was a very devoted husband and grandfather.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, Phyllis M. (Plante) Sugrue of Dover, Mr. Sugrue is survived by two sons, John A. Sugrue and his wife, Noemi, of Brookline, Mass; and William J. Sugrue, Jr. and his wife, Lois, of Plymouth, Minn.; two daughters, Marie A. Sugrue and her significant other, Anne Spicer, of New London, Conn.; and Renee C. Sugrue of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren, Melissa L. Sugrue of Plymouth, Minn.; Adriana Y. Sugrue and Gabriel Sugrue, both of Brookline, Mass.; and one niece and one nephew.
Ellen C. Pridham
EXETER - Ellen Crockett Pridham, 90, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 1999 after a period of failing health.
She was born on March 21, 1909 in Concord the daughter of Frank Shephard Crockett and Kathryn Moore Crockett. She graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1928 and from Keene Normal School (Keene State College) in 1932.
She was married to George S. Pridham in 1932. The couple lived together in New Castle for over 40 years until her husband's death. She worked as both a teacher and a medical assistant to an ophthalmologist in Portsmouth.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Mary; and two brothers, George and Dick.
Survivors include her granddaughter, Kerri O'Brien Sabalewski; her daughter, Paula O'Brien; five grandsons, Joe, Craig, Sean, Matt and Mark and their families; and many other family members and friends.
There will be a private memorial ceremony.
Doris E. Calcutt
ELIOT - Doris E. Calcutt, 91, of Goodwin Road, Eliot, died Sept. 30, 1999. She was the wife of the late Henry Calcutt.
She was born December 12, 1907 in Eliot the daughter of George and Minnie (Mosley) Dixon and attended local schools. She graduated from the Wentworth Nursing Schools, Dover, N.H.
Mrs. Calcutt greatly enjoyed crafts and nature.
She is survived by two nieces, Linda Downing and her husband, Richard A. Downing, of Eliot; and Constance Ferrin and her husband, William C. Ferrin, of York, Maine; one great niece and five great-nephews.
David B. Watson
NEWINGTON - David B. Watson, 75, of 127 Fox Point Road, Newington, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at York Hospital in York.
Born May 1, 1924, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Myles and Florence (Coleman) Watson. He was affiliated with the Civil Air Patrol since 1941 and was a Lieutenant Colonel. He was a 1949 graduate of University of New Hampshire, and in 1951, he took over his father's business, the Piscataqua Tree Service.
He belonged to the N.H. Arborist Association and Durham Reelers and was a volunteer for the Newington Fire Department. During World War II, he was a member of the Power Squadron and was an Air Force Reserves captain. He was associated with the Piscataqua Pioneers, for which he served as president for two terms. Mr. Watson's motto was, "May God help each of us keep a twinkle in our eyes, a smile on our lips, a song in our hearts, a prayer in our souls and refreshness in the lives of others."
He was the husband of Lorna (Pearson) Watson for 46 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Myles S. Watson of Wood Heights, Kan., Bren D. Watson of Deerfield, and Randal P. Watson of Newington; one daughter, Tonya L. Watson of Ventura, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy M. Watson of Newington.
William J. Sugrue
HAMPTON - The funeral for William J. Sugrue, 75, of 37 Surrey Run, Dover, formerly of Hampton, was held Monday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church. The Rev. George E. Ham, pastor, was the celebrant. Nelson K. Ward was organist and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Thomas Gillick and Robert Ficke offered the readings. Acolytes were Edward Wakeen, Richard Violette, and Robert Grissemer.
An honor guard was formed at the church and at the funeral home by St. Mary's Assembly, 4th degree Knights of Columbus, Portsmouth. A bereavement luncheon, prepared by Our Lady's Sodality, followed the mass. Burial followed in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester, Mass. with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Richard Roger.
Pallbearers were John A. Sugrue, William J. Sugrue Jr., David Olson, Thomas Gillick, Don Kangas and Robert Ficke. The U.S. flag was presented to Mr. Sugrue's widow, Phyllis M. (Plante) Sugrue. Knights of Columbus Bishop Brady Council No. 5093, the Holy Name Society, the Catholic Women's Club and Our Lady's Sodality offered prayers at the funeral home. The Rev. Daniel Sinibaldi, associate pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, also offered prayers Sunday evening.
Florrie E. Perry
KITTERY - Florrie E. Perry, 79, died Oct. 1, 1999 at Lakeland Regional Hospital in Lakeland, Fla.
Born in New Germany, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Morley and Goldie Wentzell. She was the wife of Charles E. Perry for 59 years.
She was a member of the Second Christian Church in Kittery, past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and formerly active on the Girl Scout Council.
She enjoyed golfing, craft-making, and knitting sweaters for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was the wife of Charles E. Perry for 59 years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Judy M. Pettit of Stratham, Charlene McDaniel of Belore, Ohio and Janet P. Murray of Eliot.
Janet Macomber
NEW CASTLE - Janet Nicholson Eaton Macomber, 95, died Sept. 22, 1999, in Portsmouth.
Born Aug. 6, 1904, in Newton, Mass. She was a 1926 graduate from Smith College, Northampton, Mass.; magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa.
During her long life, she resided in Newton; Wolfeboro, N.H.; and New Castle.
She was active in many organizations, including the Community Fund of Boston, the Portsmouth Atheneum, the N.H. Humanities Foundation, the Smith College Club of New Hampshire, the Wentworth Golf Club, and the Portsmouth Women's Bowling League. She was chairwoman of the Smith College Alumnae Fund.
Her special interests were in the publication of the History of Wolfeboro 1996, for which she researched the new edition and organized the dating of the antique houses in New Castle. She became the first Town Historian of New Castle.
Janet was also the chairwoman of Women's Skiing for the U.S. Eastern Ski Association, 1953-1960, and served in two Olympic selection committees.
She was married to the late Clark Macomber of Newton.
She is survived by two children, George Macomber of Boston, and Abigail Deaver of Westport, Conn.; five grandchildren, Eleanor Ann Keane, of Curacao, N.A., Grace Elizabeth Mauzy of Westport, John Drummond Macomber of Cambridge, Mass, Grace Clark Bird of Andover, Mass., and George Clark Macomber of Holderness, Mass. She had 11 grandchildren.
Francis J. Mahoney
SEABROOK BEACH - Francis J. Mahoney, 82, of 4 Tyngsboro St., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his home.
Born Feb. 20, 1917, in Methuen, Mass., he was the son of the late Daniel F. and Sarah C. (Parslow) Mahoney. He had resided in Methuen until moving to Seabrook Beach in 1952. He had wintered in Pompano Beach, Fla., since 1968.
He worked many years in real estate and insurance. In the early 1950s, he founded Mahoney's Real Estate and Insurance Co. That company evolved through many partnerships and affiliations into the Trussell, Glidden & Mahoney Insurance Co., which exists today. Several Seacoast Realtors started through their partnerships with Mahoney. He was also a builder and developer responsible for many of the homes constructed on Seabrook Beach. During the 1940s, he owned the former Mahoney Paper Co. of Lawrence and was a distributor of fresh eggs to Lawrence-area residences. During the late '40s and early '50s, he built, owned and operated a Ben Franklin store in Tilton, N.H.
In 1965, he was appointed by President Johnson to be the Federal Housing Administration director in New Hampshire. He served in that office for four years.
He was originator and trustee of the Seabrook Bank & Trust Co. and a founding partner of the WBBX radio station in Portsmouth. He also served on the bishop of Manchester's committee, overseeing the establishment and construction of St. Elizabeth's Church in Seabrook Beach, where he was a communicant.
He was the husband of Rita E. (Cronin) Mahoney for 53 years. In addition to his wife, he is also survived by several cousins.
Ruth M. Goodwin
HAMPTON - Ruth M. Goodwin, 82, of 87A Winnacunnet Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Exeter Hospital.
Born June 10, 1917, in Newburyport, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Chester B. Currier and Dorothy Currier Colby. She was a longtime resident of Hampton, moving there from Hampton Falls. She was a graduate of Amesbury High School in Amesbury, Mass.
She did secretarial work all her life and had been employed by Supervisory Administrative Unit 21 as a secretary to the principal of Winnacunnet High School for 17 years, retiring in 1988.
She was a member of the Union Congregational Church in Amesbury, Mass.
Survivors include two sons, Richard A. Tobin of Amesbury, Mass., and Jack Goodwin of Hampton; three daughters, Gale A. Pettis of Hampton Falls, Judy Konen of New York, N.Y., and Jill Cwiklik of Eliot; one brother, Howard H. Currier of Vallejo, Calif.; one sister, Harriett Lewis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Paraskevoula Karagianis
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Paraskevoula "Paras" Karagianis, 68, of 445 Ocean Blvd., Hampton, were held Monday from Buckminster Chapel, with services at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Portsmouth. The Rev. Angelo Pappas, presbyter, officiated.
Members of the church were in attendance.
Burial was in High Street Cemetery, Hampton, with committal services by the Rev. Pappas. Pallbearers were Tom Katsiantonis, Jordan Karagiannides and Francis Dicicco.
The Rev. Pappas held wake services Sunday evening from Buckminster Chapel.
Kenneth D. Brayton
HAMPTON - The funeral for Kenneth D. Brayton, 77, of 2 Birch Road, North Hampton, was held Wednesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton. The Rev. Carroll Moore, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Hampton, officiated. Jean Goss was organist. Sidney L. Brayton, son of the deceased, offered words of remembrance. Burial followed in Center Cemetery, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Moore. Pallbearers were Dick Batchelder, Harold McCoy, Mike Dyer and Wayne Matheney.
Catherine M. Stulb
ELIOT - Catherine M. "Babe" Stulb, of 30A Clark Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, in her home after a short period of illness.
Born in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Julia (Connor) Stulb.
She attended Saint Patrick's School, and graduated from Portsmouth High School and Plymouth State College, where she earned her bachelor's degree in education. She later graduated from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with a master's of science in physical education.
She continued to take courses at the University of New Hampshire, Durham, and at the University of Wyoming. She did doctoral work at New York University.
She taught and coached at Newmarket High School in Newmarket; Traip Academy in Kittery; Frisbee Junior High School in Rochester, N.H.; Sanford High School in Sanford, Maine; and Central Connecticut State College. She was an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee. She also spent 20 years at Kean College of New Jersey.
She was instrumental in starting many women's sports teams. In many years of high school and college coaching, she never had a losing season.
During her retirement, she traveled a great deal around the United States and Europe.
She was member of the Secular Fransican Order lay group, St. Raphael's Church in Kittery, Eliot Garden Club, Seacoast Amateur Golf Committee, Portsmouth Country Club, and the Plymouth State College Alumni Association, where she held the past of class agent.
Survivors include a first cousin, Catherine Heisell of San Diego; a sister-in-law, Olive Stulb of Burlingame, Calif.; a brother-in-law, George Bidlan of Kittery; and many dear friends whose care she appreciated during her illness.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, John "Jackie" Stulb; and her sister, Julia Stulb Bidlan.
